Howard vs. Schneider

My friend and I have been having a debate on which goalie we would rather have. He says we should try and sign Schneids for around 4.5 million and then trade Jimmy for a defenseman. I on the other hand disagreed. I would rather have Jimmy as he is already a proven full time goalie, and I wouldn't want to give up a 1st and 3rd (in this scenario) for a goalie people think will be good enough to be a full time starter.

So I thought I'd take it to a place where we can't get friends to take our side or anything like that and open it up to the people here. So with that said, please share your thoughts.

No offense to your friend, but he needs his head checked.

In what world would we want an unproven goalie for twice as much money when we already have a better goalie than Schneider on an amazing contract?

The Wings never overspend on goalies, and Howard is proving himself to be a top 5 goalie in the league. Schneider has done... what exactly?

Schneider is going to suck as a starter, does anyone remember that he has only become good playing for what could be a top 3 team in the league the last few years.

Can't wait to see CLB get him and do worse than they are.

That's almost exactly what I said. I told him I think Jimmy is better than Schneids and was a vezina candidate before his injury. Why trade that for something that might be better.

I've always been high on Jimmy but I'm starting to get worried about his injury history. That said, he is a known commodity as a starter. I'll take proven over potential every time, but that's just my opinion.

I don't really think there's any concern with Jimmy's "injury history". I think he's missed a handful of games over the last couple of years that he probably would have started if he'd been on any other team which either 1. Wasn't as good and was fighting for a playoff spot 2. Didn't have as much confidence in their backup goaltending. Joey Mac has been a rock steady backup for Jimmy the last two years. If he'd be shakier, I believe Jimmy would have probably played many of the games he sat out. Dualing goalies is something of a Red Wing tradition anyway, and thank god we don't rely on just one guy for 70-75 games a season (looking at you NYR and NJ).

If the Wings were at the bottom of the standings the past few years, then I might, might, take a chance with Schneider and try to get some decent Dmen in front of him, but otherwise, I'm sticking with Howie. He's a known commodity with the team, he's learned (and learning) from one of the best goalies the team has had in a while (Ozzie), and he's still closer to the start of his career than the apex.

We don't know for certain if Howie truly has an injury bug like DiPietro (but not to that extent), this could be a perception thing with us where we think he is injury prone because he's in the spotlight the most AND one of the team's better players (similar to Matt Stafford of the Detroit Lions).

Right now, the team is sticking with Howie, regardless of injuries or inconsistencies (real or perceived). In Babcock's world, no other goalie exists except for Howie (sometimes to the detriment to the team).

Schneider could be a good goalie, but right now, Howie has proven more in the NHL than Schneider has. We'll talk in a few years when Schneider gets established in the league.

Howard has started almost as many games in one season as Schneider has in his entire NHL career.

Schneider has never played more than 29 games at the NHL level. That mean's he's never been a starter and had the pressure and responsibility that comes with playing 50+ games a season.

He definitely looks promising but he's playing behind a very good Canucks team, and is still an unknown. He could just as easily go the way of Manny Legace.

I personally think Howard is the better goalie, but even if Schneider were marginally better, in the current NHL it's just not imperative you make that change. Goalies are so unpredictable, and since they don't need to be world class to win Cups, why wouldn't we just stick with the winning goalie we have? It's safer and doesn't cost us anything.

I live in Vancouver and am the furthest thing from a Canucks fan ... that said, Schneider is an awesome goalie. He better than Lou in my oppinion and seems to have a great personality as well. Flame away - but I dont hold Jimmy in much higher regard than Schneider. Hes certainly better than anything we have for backups - thats for sure.

Eh idk Schneider seems like the real deal to me. He's stolen many games for the Canucks just like tonight. I love Jimmy but hey, think Schneider will still play well when/if he gets traded.

He very well may be. But right now with only 30 games started in the same season, 65 games in his entire NHL career, and all behind a very good Vancouver team, it's hard to tell for sure.

Meanwhile in Howard you have someone much more proven. And at 27 Jimmy is only a year older than Schneider. It's not like Schneider is some kid.

Wow, this shouldn't even be a debate. There's probably two goalies in the NHL that I'd take over Howard and Schneider aint one of them. Howard is on his way to be an all-star goalie. Schneider had a few good NHL games behind a good Canucks team in a weak division.
