MidMichSteve 1,115 Report post Posted April 3, 2012 I'm not surprised, right number of games. Couldn't understand why some of you thought 3 games? The only replays I saw were from a long distance. It looked, to me, like he may have thrown an elbow. I'm glad that wasn't the case. I agree, right number of games.
WINGSINAZ 2 Report post Posted April 3, 2012 I understand the ruling and agree with the fact that its in place to take the head shots out of the game and that yes Quincey left his feet. However, these types of hits are a result of something much more. The laughable part of Shanahan's explaination is as follows: “Despite Quincey's assertion that he was simply bracing to counter-hit Kopecky, fact of the matter is Kopecky never attempted to throw a hit on this play. In fact, there was nothing in Kopecky's approach that indicated that Quincey needed to defend himself in this manner." Ten years ago any 2 players going for a puck like that would have expected to either hit or be hit, and thus braced themselves for that contact. Heck, even I tell my 7 year old son that when he goes for a puck like that he better be prepared for a hit or some form of contact (even though they're obviously not allowed to do that at his age). Thats the problem with where the game is going. The fact that Kopecky thinks he can play that puck without getting some sort of contact/hit in return is absurd! 1 esteef reacted to this

13dangledangle 960 Report post Posted April 3, 2012 What I expected. At least Shanny got it right and called it a charge and not an elbow. Quincey took a flying leap but it didn't look like he threw his elbow out there. Maybe the fact that he's a repeat offender will cause Quincey to take fewer stupid penalties. Probably wishful thinking... It was almost like Tomas was trying to embelish the hit sooo much he dove headfirst into Kyle's elbow. What a clown. 2 lil Wing's fan and sleepwalker reacted to this

ACallToArms 270 Report post Posted April 3, 2012 Looks like Quincey was trying to Kronwall Kopecky, and failed. Kindl is 100% better than QQQQ They both suck, imo. The more I see of Quincey, the more I'm reminded of why I hated the guy when he was here the first time around. He's a step up from Kindl, no question about that, but still not worth a 1st rounder. If Yzerman was doing us favors, Holland should of used that 1st round pick to try and swing a deal for Purcell, to give Detroit a good right-handed shot on the PP. 1 Wings_Rule_1010 reacted to this
kipwinger 8,522 Report post Posted April 3, 2012 One game is less than I imagined it would be (figured 2 or 3) but fair considering there was no history and no injury. The suspension won't hurt the team, as we're rotating the D anyway, and should give E a little more time to get back into game shape. All in all I'd rather it would have never happened, but since it did, this is the best possible outcome.
Jedi 1,865 Report post Posted April 3, 2012 Some interesting (albeit, incorrect) trivia From the Red Wings' official site... Quincey is the first Wings’ player suspended since former defenseman Jiri Fischer sat out one game for head-butting Los Angeles forward Ian Laperriere on Jan. 22, 2004. Two weeks earlier, Mathieu Schneider served a two-game suspension for a high-stick on Boston forward Glen Murray. It does mention at the bottom of the article that Smith was suspended 8 games earlier in the year (3 in the pre-season, and 5 in the regular season). Perhaps their definition of "For-the-first-time-in-more-than-eight-years" isn't including suspensions handed out in the pre-season?
Majsheppard 203 Report post Posted April 3, 2012 They would have just traded it at the draft anyways... Yeah... but we would have gotten two players who would play for us in return... this makes the trade even worse. I have determined that I no longer give a flying #%&@ what anyone thinks of what I say. You all have no hockey sense if you think he has played well to this point, think he will be the difference in winning a cup, think that he will make losing Stuart or Lidstrom okay, or think that he is worth the salary and draft pick we will give up, or think that losing Kindl as well doesn't make the trade worse, or thinks that the two college boys we were looking at would have been any worse than using the first pick we traded and signing them for depth. It all boils down to options. Giving up that first for Kyle severely limited our options. If we saw significant short term benefits, then we would be able to justify it. True, we don't know if he will make a difference in the playoffs yet. From what I see, the only logical conclusion is to not bet on it. I really hope I am wrong, but well you can be the judge. I just find your judgement to this point to be flawed if you perceive my "negativity" as anything but realistic appraisal of what has happened to this point. Quincey either thought Kopecky, who does play a grittier game than most euro-wusses, was going to finish his check (which he should have), or that Kopecky was going to chase the puck into the zone after it flipped up behind Quincey like it did. Either way I think it was a good hit but he did leave his feet slightly so I guess that's all Shanny needed. Scott Stevens probably laughs himself out of his Lazy-boy when he hears of hits like this being suspendable. Oh well... esteef

I just find your judgement to this point to be flawed if you perceive my "negativity" as anything but realistic appraisal of what has happened to this point. I agree with the assessment of Quincey. I haven't seen anything yet from Quincey that makes me feel confident about his play going forward or especially the price tag it took to acquire him. I think there was an element of getting Q to prepare for Stuart likely leaving this summer, but that really only is going to work out if Quincey improves on what has been a disappointing return so far. I think the most frustrating part of giving up a first for Quincey to me is how ready Smith has looked to play in the NHL. I would be plenty confident in a third pairing right now of Ericsson/Smith even in the playoffs. I'm assuming the common retort here will be Smith's lack of experience compared to Quincey, which I somewhat understand. However, does anyone think Quincey isn't going to cost the team at some point with his habit of taking really dumb/untimely penalties? His one consistency since coming back to the Red Wings has been a lack of discipline. Kindl has actually looked pretty good to me lately too. He was bad on Sunday -- namely a couple of lazy passes in his own zone and poor entry on the powerplay, but overall I thought he has been sound defensively and using his size a little more than usual. Even in the scenario where Stuart isn't back next season, the Red Wings still have six capable d-men (assuming Nick returns) on the roster and all of free agency to add depth without giving up anything in the process. Quincey still has a great opportunity to prove himself, but I'm very skeptical of that happening judging by his performance to date. I can live with Quincey on the third pairing more if he cuts down on the penalties. If not, he's going to be a liability since special teams can swing a playoff series and the Red Wings PK hasn't been too strong this season.

I'll take dumb penalties over dumb turnovers any day of the week. Smith is a good player with a lot of potential, but he turned the puck over for goals A LOT while he was up. He needs a full season to get that out of his system, not to be brought up to work out the kinks in the playoffs when it matters most. Quincey is a MUCH better defenseman than Smith at this point in their respective careers. Additionally, let's be honest and say that nobody was good during the losing streak (with the exceptions of Z and Flip) so singling out Quincey during that time isn't really all that fair. Also, I've been very impressed with Kindl's steady play since returning from injury. Nothing flashy, but rarely in the box, rarely turning pucks over, and occasionally getting involved a little in the offense. Don't know what that means for him going forward, but I don't think he's hurting us now. Edited April 3, 2012 by kipwinger 1 P.
