What's Kenny Holland's Offseason Plan?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

I bet a million dollars that Holland thinks the top six is Ok.

He's preaching lack-of-depth. Sure to s***, the only thing he'll do is add a guy like Phalsson to the bottom six and then start the media spin about a healthy Helm and Eaves, and promotion of Nyquist and Smith.

When in reality he needs to add an all star winger to the top six, two wreckers on the bottom six, a top four defenseman, and a veteran back- up.

It's obvious reading this thread that LGWers agree.

Again, what would you propose to get Nash?

It's not even worth thinking about; unless he receives an offer of epic proportions, Howson will not trade Nash within the division.

Well, if Nash isn't available, then its back to this:

Parise - Datsyuk - Bertuzzi

Fillpula - Zetterberg - Franzen

Cleary - Arnott - Holmstrom

Abdelkader - Helm - Miller

Eaves/Holmstrom

Lidstrom - White

Suter - Kronwall

Ericsson - Quincey

Smith/Quincey

Personally I don't want Bert playing with Datsyuk, waste of space.

The more people talk about Parise and Suter the less I think we'll actually get them.

esteef

Agreed. The more I look at it I see Parise getting lured to Minnesota. And then Suter may follow him there if the two want to play together. From the looks of it they have a ton of talent prospect wise turning pro this coming year with granlund being a future star according to a lot of scouts. Plus they were playing really well at the beginning of the year so they have some selling points. I think they can land Parise and Suter. Wings should look at Semin and maybe trading for Iginla.

But look how many goals Hudler and Franzen produce. They're practically snipers! :hehe:

esteef

...and how could he pass on acquiring all those GWG's?

Who are you guys shipping to Dallas for Morrow?

Franzen +

Morrow can't stay healthy. That's an issue.

Franzen cannot either....plus is his VERY unreliable AND a wussy...

EDIT: Forget Iginla...the time for aging stars, past thier prime in Detroit is over...plus he makes WAAAY too much money...

Also, a follow up on Iginla, I don't think we have the expendable assets to acquire him. Franzen would not get him here, you'd have to add some key pieces to Detroit's future to that trade. Same story for Nash, you would deplete GRR. Franzen + Mursak (or Emmerton) would get Detroit Morrow. Then you only lose one prospect with NHL experience and Franzen (who has become stale in this system and town) and you acquire a gritty, tough (albeit somewhat injury prone) third line winger that will complement Helm and Bertuzzi well. It's not always about getting the best players, it's about getting the players that will play well together and have similar game. That is why I defend the people talking about getting Semin here to play with Datsyuk. So he is a floater, but he is a pure sniper and that is what Dats needs. Hull was a floater most of his career and look what that got him... If you had a line of Parise-Dats-Semin, you just may see two 40 goal scorer's and Dats would finally break the 100 point mark...

Then imagine a line of Morrow-Helm-Bertuzzi. That would be a very tough line to do anything against. Follow that up with Miller-Abby-Eaves(if healthy) and you have very VERY good bottom 6. That leaves Filppula and Zetterberg with their chemistry together and inject Nyquist on their the other side and you could have 2 of the best top lines in the league instantly...

This offseason has the potential to be one of the most interesting and active offseasons league-wide in recent history. The Wings obviously need to shake things up after two second round exits followed by a first round slaughtering. The Penguns have been underperformers in the postseason since winning the Cup (plus a 1st round exit in ugly fashion); they'll likely look to shake things up. The Canucks were embarrassed by the 8th seed Kings and might look to shake things up. The Sharks are in desperate need of an identity change and should look to shake things up. The Rangers and Bruins are still fighting but their first rounds arent going as expected either. There are so many teams this year in hot hockey markets that were favorites to go far and they all underperformed. I expect all of these teams to be moving pieces around. Consequently, Parise may be the obvious choice, but Holland needs to keep his mind open about the possibility of landing a Jordan Staal or Ryan Kesler or Patrick Marleau if need be. Maybe not necessarily those players (although I would love to have Staal) but there should be a lot of options out there given how this season is closing, and I see our team and see a lot of trade bait that could be more valuable to a team structured differently than ours.

I have said it before, even though I would like to have Morrow here in exchange for Franzen, I could see Vancouver trying to unite him with the Sedins and I would love to have Burrows here! Unlikely, but a good example of you exact scenario described... I could also see Cleary being shipped off to be the a veteran leader of a young up and coming team as well...

Looking at the 2013 UFA list Kenny needs to do the smart thing and forget about Parise and focus on Suter and hope guys like Nyquist and Tatar can step up and contribute on offense next season.

I'd rather wait it out and go after Getzlaf and or Perry, Jordan Stall, Nathan Horton and many other good players.

That is a gamble though. Most of those players on the 2013 UFA list will be re-signed by their current teams. The Ducks will not let both Getzlaf and Perry leave. The Pens will keep Staal and Horton has concussion issues. Holland stayed out of the UFA spending last summer mainly because of the weak crop plus he knew the big money would be better served going after Parise and Suter and possibly Weber in 2013. The Wings are in great shape right now in terms of adding elite UFA talent. Kenny just has to convince Suter, Parise and Weber to come here. We have alot of our own prospects whom we've developed like Nyquist, Mursak, Tatar and Smith to fill out the roster. Eventually Jankrok, Pulkinnen and Callahan will be on the way here as well as Mrazek.

This summer will definitely be interesting for the Wings. The one thing I would be concerned with, in terms of the money the Wings toss around, is that after next season the Wings have some (currently) pretty important players needing new contracts in Howard and Filppula. Next summer Cleary's contract will expire and if he were to be re-signed it would be at a lower cap hit than his current $2.8M/yr. Ian White's contract will also expire by then.

Obviously everyone around here wants Suter and Parise. Obviously Im in that boat but beyond those two I'd also like to see someone like David Jones. Despite his injury problems from a couple ofyears ago and his slightly down season this year he's a guy that score mid-twenties, plays a physical game and wouldn't require much more (if any) money than his current $2.5M/yr deal. I think he'd be an ideal (and realistic) replacement for Jiri Hudler.

That is a gamble though. Most of those players on the 20123 UFA list will be re-signed by their current teams. I agree with what you are saying in terms of Holland holding off of spending last year so that he'd have the required money to go after legit targets (like Parise and/or Suter) but imagine for a second that the Wings did sign Suter and Parise even for great deals at say $6M/yr. Even at that rate there is very little chance (even with possible cap increases) that the Wings would have the space to bring Weber in the following summer - as much as I and a lot of Wings fans (Zetterberg head bash aside) would love to see that.

It is a bit risky but I just find it hard to believe Holland will be able to land both. With Lidstrom possibly retiring Suter should be priority #1.

Going to be interesting to see how Holland plays his cards. It is also possible that Anaheim may only be able to keep one of Perry and Getzlaff, also Crosby will get a monster deal from the Pens and Stall will be getting a raise, Pittsburgh may not be able to afford him. There are also many others in 2013 who are good as well but maybe not Parise caliber.

One thing I am waiting to see play out is in the new CBA there may be an amnesty buyout. Basically you buy a guy out and it doesn't count against the cap, I really, really, hope this happens so Holland can get rid of a terrible contract.

Everything I have heard is that there will be no amnesty buyout provision this time. I wish there was. There may be a lockout at least for the first 2 months next season. No one really knows right now. Now that Donald Fehr is head of the Players Association, Gary will no longer be able to bully them into submission. I think us Wings fans are setting ourselves up (myself included) for severe disappointment if we are unable to get at least 1 of Parise or Suter. All 30 teams in the league will be after both of them. However I think the Wings are one of the favourites for a variety of reasons (cap space, class organization, great owner, committment and history of winning, still excellent star players on the team, etc). We will just have to see what happens. With so many teams locking up their star players to long term deals, it is rare when 2 of the best players in the game become UFAs at only 27 years of age. If Kenny can sign both these players then that is a HUGE infusion of talent and makes a good Wings team a potentially great Wings team. Nick returning for one more season makes it a home run IMO.

Sounds like they're looking to actually spend some cash this summer.

Red Wings will be looking to spend big this summer

“We have tons of money and if we can use our cap space to get high-end free agents, we have a shot to get right back on top,” Babcock said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press on Sunday, two days after Nashville eliminated Detroit. “If we’re fortunate in free agency, we won’t have to look at going in another direction.”

Making big additions this summer would definitely fit the pattern we've been in:

1997: Stanley Cup Finals

1998: Stanley Cup Finals

1999: Eliminated by the Avs in the second round

2000: Eliminated by the Avs in the second round

2001: Eliminated in the first round

2002: Make a big trade (Hasek), acquire big name free agents (Hull Robitaille), win Stanley Cup

2008: Stanley Cup Finals

2009: Stanley Cup Finals

2010: Eliminated by the Sharks in the second round

2011: Eliminated by the Sharks in the second round

2012: Eliminated in the first round

2013: Trade (Nash, Iginla?), free agent signings (Parise, Suter?), another Cup?
