lines could be tweaked i didn't set them (i would have put helm above abby etc.)

even with the cap staying put this roster can work.

how it all happened.

1A. re-sign helm and abby

1B. lidstrom and holmstrom retire after great careers

2. wings nab suter for 7.0 mil. this contract is probably a little inflated but in this market and with the demand he will bring about it seems pretty fair. could always have the contract have different cap hits per year... but i think 7 mill for year 1 is somewhat fair for both sides given the circumstances.

3. parise follows suit for 6.7. he too may not be worth a contract on par with pavels... but in reality he could fetch a lot more on the open market. tells him "your worth pavel like money" and also "we dont pay any forward more then we pay pav". from his perspective... he should be somewhat flattered seeing as though the wings dont throw money like that around to just anybody and that his cap hit is the same amount as one of the biggest forces in the game. i like it for both sides once again, given the circumstances.

4. let hudler, stuart, kindl all walk. (kindl waived)

5. sign jackman at 3.5 if hes willing (may be able to sugarcoat it a little bit with a cap increase)... replaces stuart, makes our team tougher, solidifies the backend.

6. re-sign quincey to 1 year, 2.4 contract. take or leave it. feel like we will re-sign him since he did cost us a 1st rounder. i understand this is a decent amount less then he made prior... but at this point he needs to prove his worth if he wants to stay here. i must say i think he is a better player then he showed in the red and white last year.

7. sign harding to a 1-2 year deal around a mill

note. i had to waive eaves to make this happen... main reason was his contract secondly his injury history. if healthy and with a cap increase he could replace emmerton on the 4th.

could make this roster with almost 5 million left over. say the cap does go up to 70 (from 64).... leaves us about 10-11 million left over. could literally have signed semin too just like the way this roster flows better then if he were in the top 6 (which bumps filppula franzen or nyquil out)

but in reality... you think kenny could make something happen at the deadline with 10-11 mill cap space?

No worries. I wasn't trying to call you out; the thread got kind of buried. It'll be nice to have one spot for everyone to rosterbate in.

Don't see why Nic should be getting much more than Kronner at this point not to mention he no longer kills penalties. 5 mill is still hefty salary though. If thats a no then I'd attempt to sign Wideman who shoots right or Carle. Harding would be a one year deal thing because I know he wants a full time no 1 job but this offseason he might not get it with better goalies available.

(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)

SALARY CAP: $70,000,000; CAP PAYROLL: $68,423,712; BONUSES: $432,500

CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $1,576,288

Main Point:

If we're going to continue to play this (relatively) 'finesse' style of hockey - and, given our current personnel and pool of prospects, it appears we'll have no other choice...unless we want to totally rebuild - then we had better start scoring some more goals. That, IMO, is our number one problem right now, and it has been for quite some time. Here's how I believe we should attack it.

...#1) We need to add not one, but two elite top six scorers. Looking at our team right now, I see only four legitimate top six players - Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Franzen and Filppula. That means we need two more. Parise and Semin are the top two available right now. Let's go out and get both (it's possible...if we trade Cleary and Bertuzzi). And how do we make the most of that talent? A) Put Datsyuk on the wing of the first line. He's the most dangerous offensive player in the game, arguably. He's getting up there in age. How about we let him focus on the offensive end. Put Zetterberg in the middle of that first line. Let him worry about the defensive end. His offensive skills are sort of diminishing anyways. And on the other wing, a hard-working talented power forward like Parise is just what the doctor ordered to create the single greatest line in the NHL. What's left for the second line? A hell of a lot. Filppula in the middle. He's become very, very good defensively. Certainly good enough to center a second line. And next to Pav, he's probably the best play-maker on this team. What he needs is a couple of snipers to finish off his passes. And that's exactly what he'll have in Mule and Semin. Nice that Mule's a relatively big body too.

...#2) We need to roll a third scoring line. For starters, I am sick of watching all of these 'super skilled' prospects waste away in the minor leagues until they are ready to be legitimate top six players...which most of them never become anyways. We've got a ton of talented scorers in our system. We can add them to the team very cheaply. They may not be 'over-prime,' but they're certainly ready enough to play well. And some of these guys NEED to get NHL experience, or they'll never develop. Gustav Nyquist is a perfect candidate for this third scoring line. Calle Jarnkrok, I think is the guy who should be centering it - seems ready enough for me. As for the third guy...Tatar, Pulkkinen and Jurco are all going to be in camp. May the best man win. Too young you say? Tatar is 21. Pulkkinen and Jurco are 20 - the same age Sheahan was when he suited up in a crucial game this season. If the guy's are ready to play, the guy's are ready to play.

...#3) One checking line means some fat will need to be trimmed. The checking line I'd most like to see out there obviously features Helm in the middle, with Abdelkader on the wing. The third guy? Maybe a bit controversial here...but I'd like to see Riley Sheahan get his shot. He's big enough. He's strong enough. He's got enough high-level experience. And he did play a game for us last year. The guy was a high first round pick. Let's see what he can do. Eaves and Miller are cheap enough to be your 13th and 14th forwards (sucks to lose Emmerton). Cleary, unfortunately, is not. And he's not skilled enough offensively, IMO, to be a member of a scoring line...so I'm moving him. Bertuzzi, I don't think fits into a scoring line (due to his lack of offensive skill), or into a checking line (due to his lack of defensive skill). Move him. Moving those two guys, believe it or not, gives us enough cap space to retain Lidstrom at 5mil, while adding Parise, Suter and Semin at 7, 7 and 6mil.

...#4) Defensively, it's simple enough. Suter replaces Stuart. Smith replaces Quincey. If Lids retires, then, ugh, I guess we bring back Quincey.

...#5) Sounds like someone will be brought into at least compete with Joey Mac for the backup spot. We'll see who it is.

Just a few things.

1. Rumors are Suter and parise will be over 7.5 million each.

I'd gladly give them $7.5M+ to be Red Wings for the rest of their career's

2. Ericsson has a no trade clause. So does Burt and Dat btw....

Bertuzzi's NTC was for last contract, he does not have one for the next two years

3. Helm and Abdelkader will both be around 2 million. Somewhere in the 1.8-2.2 range for each.

This couldn't be any further from the truth...No way either of them will get that much. Helm will get $1.5M and Abby $1.25M tops...

4. Quincy will be 3.5 million or more.

Good, I'll be happy getting a first round pick back for him PLUS a third to boot! (hopefully he signs with a bottom dweller like Edmonton or Montreal or Columbus, I will gladly welcome that 1st and 3rd for Quincey!) So I would have to offer him a $3.25M qualifying offer for a year and hope he doesn't accept it...

Compensation for 2011-2012 RFA's:

$1,034,249 annual cap hit or less: No compensation

$1,034,249 — $1,567,043: Third-round pick

$1,567,043 — $3,134,088: Second-round pick

$3,134,088 — $4,701,131: First and third-round pick

$4,701,131 — $6,268,175: First, second and third-round pick

$6,268,175 — $7,835,219: Two first-round picks, a second and third

$7,835,219 and higher: Four first-round picks

5. I do hope that Nicky and Hommer call it a career so we all can move on.

Amen!

Here is my $70M Cap Roster:

Zach Parise ($7.500m) / Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) / Johan Franzen ($3.955m)

Gustav Nyquist ($0.875m) / Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / Valtteri Filppula ($3.000m)

Cory Emmerton ($0.533m) /

DEFENSEMEN

Niklas Kronwall ($4.750m) / Ryan Suter ($7.500m)

Ian White ($2.875m) / Nicklas Lidstrom ($6.200m)

Jonathan Ericsson ($3.250m) / Brendan Smith ($0.875m)

SALARY CAP: $70,000,000; CAP PAYROLL: $67,142,045; BONUSES: $37,500

CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $2,357,955

Subtractions from the team are: Hudler, Holmstrom, Mursak, Stuart, MacDonald & Quincey(since I don't think he will accept $3M or less, he can go RFA.)

I only gave Parise and Suter $7.5M because they signed 8+ year deals. I still have $2.3M in Cap space, so if they wanted shorter (5 year) contracts I could up their salaries by $1M each and still be above the Cap...

If the Cap remains the same or only slightly rises, then I am still going hard for Suter and Parise, Lidstrom can hang em up along with Holmstrom and then I am getting a cheaper 5th or 6th dman to rotate with Kindl.

I am also signing Dan Dekeyser AND Jeremy Welsh to play in GRR next season and help secure our future!

I'd love to have a Brenden Morrow in here, so if maybe a package of Cleary and Mursak would get that done, then I am all for it! I know he makes $1.3M more than Cleary, but I still have cap space to acquire him...that is just a from left field exchange though...if Cleary stays healthy, he is a great 3rd liner.

Just to clarify, remember Lidstrom was injured in the playoffs. That's why he wasn't on the PK.

In the regular season he still led all defensemen in TOI per game and did still kill penalties, though he was #5 among dmen in SHTOI/G.

That being said if he does come back I'd expect him to shift to more of a #2 role and hopefully his minutes will come down a bit. I don't know that they'd be able to re-sign him for cheaper than Kronwall's current contract though.

Right. Basically if he's okay with being grossly underpaid for his role on the ice.

Even at his age, Lidstrom is a defenseman who can play 20+ high quality minutes a night. To pay him less than Kronner's $4.75 would be a steal.

As I've said before, it's not Lidstrom's responsibility to manage the cap and take a paycut so the team can be a contender. It's Holland's job to manage payroll. I know it's easy to think about all the money he's already made, but it's also easy to give away a couple million dollars when it's not yours.

Lidstrom will probably take another hometown discount like he has before. I just don't expect it to be less then $4.75 mill but who knows.

I know it's easy to think about all the money he's already made, but it's also easy to give away a couple million dollars when it's not yours.

Lidstrom will probably take another hometown discount like he has before. I just don't expect it to be less then $4.75 mill but who knows.

Yes, in my perfect world scenario, Holland lands BOTH Parise and Suter and still have enough money for Helm, Abby, Lids and bring up Smith...but it wont happen if the Cap does not increase. THat is the only way we get all three Parise, Suter, Lidstrom because I only get just under $3M left over before Lids signs and Smith comes up...

For me, either the Cap goes up or Lidstrom hangs em up...I just cannot pass on Parise and Suter. If I cannot get both or even one of them, then Lids can return and I look at lessor talent (than Suter/Parise) to try to better this team...For me though, I think #1 priority is Suter, then Parise is 1a.

highly doubt nick takes a hometown discount...

nicks idea of a discount will be 6.0 per season flat from his 6.2. nothing against the guy, just saying he hasn't given us any reason in the past to believe he is willing to sacrifice out of his own pocket for the better of the team (yzerman did this i recall). you'd think after making 6+ per season your whole career for the same team making 2-3 your last year wouldn't hurt your bank account too bad but hey, you never know.

For all who said he shouldn't make less than kronner, I agree (i had him listed in my roster at 5mill) however, I don't think it should be THAT much more than kronner. Kronwall has played full year in every situation, is on the rise, and easily plays well over 20min a night. He also deals out the big hits. Lids is slowing down, and honestly I don't think he is incredibly better than Kronner anymore. Lids has slowed down a bit and shouldn't be relied on to be the no.1 guy anymore even if he still has the skills to be the no.1 guy. I say 5-5.5 is reasonable considering that his role is on the decline, especially if we bring in a guy like suter this offseason.

Yzerman was declining as a player in the years he took a discount. Lidstrom took a 1.25 million pay cut in 2011 and went on to win a Norris trophy. His 7th.

If your job was incredibly physically taxing, required extensive year round training, had a high risk of injury, took you away from your family for three-quarters of the year, AND you were one of the best to ever do it, no matter how much you made previously it wouldn't be that easy to decide to do it another year and make a lot less than guys who aren't nearly as good as you are. All in hopes that your boss spends the money you gave up wisely, rather than pissing it away or having it end up in the owner's pocket.

It's not like Nick can say "I'll take $4 million and you use the money you saved to get Suter." All he can do is take the major pay cut. Then there's still a good chance Holland comes back with "well, the market was tough. We didn't want to give up good prospects. We like the team we have." So Lidstrom will have committed to another year (I can't see him retiring mid-season short of injury) at much less than he's worth on a team that's not any better.

It's Holland's job to deal with cap space, not Lidstrom's.

Agreed. I think Kronwall's role will keep increasing and hopefully other guys can share some of the load. The reality is though when the team struggles they end up leaning heavier on Nick every time.

That salary range would be great for Lidstrom though.

CAP SPACE (21-man roster): $192,121

I just through it together..if a player is missing from last years roster then obviously I don't like his face.

I think I was pretty generous to the new guys to try and make it realistic. Hopefully it happens!

Doubt Nick takes that amount, mostly wishful thinking.

Why cant we get Wideman instead of Quincey? Same money proven player & won't be back if Dale has left. Watch the East games those guys are hitting & I don't think most of the wings can handle it, you need some bigger faster guys unless regular season games are fun to watch.

The second trade would NEVER happe. Girardi is premeir and they get a fringe fourth liner and an undersized dman and a s***ty pick lol. Lucic trade prolly wouldnt happen just cause he brings grit to their team with scoring... invaluable think helm.

I'm not one who thinks Lidstrom should/needs/will take a pay cut.

However, I personally don't think that Holland/Lidstrom/Illich are silly enough to go through the situation you described above. If the idea of Lidstrom taking a pay cut was ever to be tossed around I would think that it would be on the premise that a star is signed with that surprlus of money. Meaning: Lidstrom wouldn't sign a new contract until later in the summer when that star has been signed. If Holland sets out to get a star but the market is too tough and ends up with squat then Lidstrom doesnt have to take the cut.
