Yeah, I think this is not going to be happy news for us that were hoping for one more year.

You don't have a press conference usually to announce an extension. This is bad news.

This.

I'm nothing but bummed right now.

I think this is a retirement press conference.

Hoping against hope that I'm wrong, but it just doesn't have that "extension" feel to it.

There's been no speculation around an extension or anything so this leads me to believe it's to announce his retirement. Going to be a sad day tomorrow.

Found the tweet from the Wings last year about Lidstrom's extension. It was a conference call, not a full blown press conference.

The Red Wings have called an 11 A.M. media conference call. Speakers on the call include GM Ken Holland and Nicklas Lidstrom.

And I found a story from last year, which also points out that it was only a conference call...

When a player like Nicklas Lidstrom is thinking about retirement and ultimately calls a conference call instead of a full press conference, you probably know exactly what his decision is going to be. That's been the case on Monday morning, as one of the greatest defensemen to play the game will return for at least one more year.

Granted, no official details have been released, but I really have the feeling that Nick is hanging them up tomorrow.

Didn't he have a press conference last year about playing one more year?

No, it was a conference call.

They did not. Conference call.

If it's a press conference, he's done. We all knew this day would come eventually, no matter how much none of us want to see it. I will say that I'm not going to be overly optimistic about this team's future without him. I foresee dark days ahead for a while. We could weather the storm after Steve retired, but Nick is a horse of an entirely different color.

Got damn it. :(

from twitter:

The last time the Devils were in the Stanley Cup Finals in 2003, Patrick Roy announced his retirement on the day after Game 1.

Even though deep down I feel like it's to annnounce his retirement, another part of me is hoping it's not.

Wouldn't it be said that Ilitch would also be present alongside Holland and Lidstrom?

Khan is pretty convinced that it's a retirement announcement. The Captain isn't the kind of guy to drum up a bunch of attention to say he is coming back.

A year and almost a week to the day that Rafalski retired. Goddamnit.
