We've been mightyf****** privileged to watch the players we've seen over the years, and Nick is certainly no exception. First home game of the '12-'13 season better see #5 get raised to the rafters.

It's going to suck like hell to see the Wings take the ice without him, just like it was after Steve retired. Ugh. What a brutal month this has been for me, not just personally. Can't wait for June.

Well, I guess I'll be getting drunk while bemoaning the Red Wings new terrible lot in life. This...is just THE WORST! And I'm being way more articulate now than I was earlier when all I could get out was "we are f***ed," over and over and over again while my body slipped into a shock-like state. I honestly did not see this coming. I really expected it to be next year. I was emotionally prepared for next year. This year? This is just...THE WORST!!!

Nah, whats worse is that we had to watch Lidstrom retire bowing out in the first round...we'll have to watch Brodeur retire possibly hoisting a Cup...now that'll suck! Lets hope LA humiliates the Devils!

Thanks for the memories. Maybe this is a blessing in disguise. He'll be alongside his sons for their development over the next few years. With a bit luck we sign one or both of them and get to enjoy another 20+ years of a lidstrom on the roster.

This announcement makes me extraordinarily sad. I feel lucky to have watched one of the greats play for the Red Wings. But it is sad to see Nick go, for sure, even though we knew it would happen.

Exactly. I expected serious changes this offseason that would give us a more playoff-ready team. I figured even if we didn't win next year, we'd probably add guys that would at least give us the potential to make a far more serious push than we did this year, and I'd be fine seeing Nick leave on that note. But yeah, after going out in the 1st round, I just remember thinking that there's no way he can go out like this.

My bet is he doesn't trust that they're going to make the moves necessary to be competitive or hopefully, that he just feels like the money would be better spent on signing a guy who'd be a long-term asset. I'm hoping it's the latter, but either way, this is terribly sad news.

Thanks for 20 years of great service, and for all the memories. Lids was definately one of a kind, and it sucks to see him retire. He was definately a joy to watch over the years. I wish him the best of luck.

Well Suter will have big big shoes to fill thatsa for sure I really don't know what to think of right now but I lets be honest we are not the top dogs in the league anymore and our great captain doesn't need the money so maybe joining his family is the right decision here...but as a DRW fan it will sad sad day going to wear my #5 jersey one more time the whole day.

I wonder if the uncertainty of a new CBA played any role in this. Can you imagine if Nick decided to return, put in all the off-season work and then there was a lockout and/or shortened season.
