Curt Fraser named Dallas Stars Assistant Coach

Dallas Stars general manager Joe Nieuwendyk announced today that the club has named Curt Fraser as its assistant coach.

Fraser, 54, has spent the last four seasons as head coach of the Grand Rapids Griffins, the AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings. While in Grand Rapids, he compiled a 146-130-40 record and is that franchise’s career coaching leader in regular-season wins (146) and games behind the bench (316).

I really believe that the Griffins have been lacking something since Fraser took over. Maybe this is an opportunity for a different coach to come in and lead the Griffins to a playoff berth.

I really believe that the Griffins have been lacking something since Fraser took over. Maybe this is an opportunity for a different coach to come in and lead the Griffins to a playoff berth.

I remember reading a story maybe 2 months back that the Wings' brass liked having Fraser in GR. They were disappointed, of course, that the Grif's never made the playoffs, but they felt that Fraser's role as player developer was second to none.

I have no clue, however, where exactly I saw that story, so I have no way of providing any source material on that.

From the concept of developing a player, he was average as well. I really can't say he was that good or that bad. All I can say is that the Griffins as a whole have been below average. I would like to see the Griffins field a playoff team for a change. They have the expertise and players to make it happen.

I've been away and the first thing I asked myself was when the Griffins fired Fraser. Not at all upset to see Fraser leave. I've felt for a couple of years now that the team has had the talent level - especially last year - to compete but they simply did not. Hopefully this will be a positive change.
