The thing is, if we (or any other team not named the Hurricanes) acquired him, he would only be a Wing for a year, seems pretty clear he wanted to go to Carolina to be with his bro

This talk about the Pens in on Parise now is just absurd. They picked up $2 mil in cap space in this exchange of players. They have 7 free agents after next year, one of which is Crosby. I keep reading "They'll trade Martin to a team that needs to get the cap floor and then we'll have tons of space!" Uhh yeah, offense wasn't the problem last year. It was their inability to keep the puck out of the net. Not to mention, I don't think the captain of the Devils will join a rival opponent. They would be smarter to go after Suter, but he already said he doesn't want to play in the East.

Exactly. When I was reading on Twitter that the Pens are in on Suter AND Parise, I was wondering where the hell they were getting all this new cap space from. Mortgage the future for a one-year Cup run? Sounds status quo for teams like Pittsburgh. Suter's not going East (I think he stays in Nashville) and I highly doubt Parise would go to a division rival, especially a division rival like the Penguins where he would be mis-utilized and underappreciated.

You got to hand it to the GM's of Pitts and Carolina ... Lebrun reported that they started chatting at 4:00 pm and by 7:00 pm, deal was done. You gotta like how quickly some GM's get things done.

A part of me suspects that this was something that's been in the works for a while. I even think its possible that the 10yr offer wasn't necessarily even for Staal, but to let other big name players know that the Pens organization is willing spend big and make Pittsburgh a permanent home for someone (appealing for a Parise or Suter to see that type of commitment).

Maybe I'm giving Shero too much credit, but it still ended up being a shrewd move.

Say what you will about the Penguins but Shero is a damn impressive GM. His hands were tied in this thing and he still managed to pull off an outstanding return. With one trade he has improved the defense and offense for years to come pains to acknowledge it, but they are going to be a contender for a long time now.

On the other hand Rutherford lost that trade, he could have waited one damn year and get him without losing anything *lmao*

Interesting trade. Both teams win, in my opinion.

Jordan Staal turned down a long-term offer from the Penguins, which isn't too strange. What they reportedly offered him is a little bit odd. Reportedly, the Penguins were up to 10 years, $60-million. Even though the cap continues to climb, the guy has some impressive tools, and is only 23, would you be willing to pay him that to play for the Wings?

Its so hard to tell. On the Penguins he was always going to play third banana to the kid and Malkin, but the Pens were willing to pay that much for him in the third slot. Perhaps on a team like the Canes he'll blossom into a beast, but only time will tell.

I had the exact same thought when I saw the terms he turned down. Shero would have to be off his rocker (which I don't believe he is) to offer, in earnest, that much for a 3rd line center. I'm not knocking Staal's skills, or saying that he's no better than 3rd line material in the general sense. I think we all know he's more talented than that...but he'd be playing behind two of the very best centermen in the league for years to come had he stayed in Pitt.

Good on Shero, if we're right. As much as I hate the Pens, I have to respect that sort of foresight.

I don't know what the rush is to go play with his brother. If I were Carolina, I'd wait it out another year until he is a UFA instead of throwing all those players at a contract that is going to expire in a year. I mean it's a given that he'll probably resign, but what's the incentive of trading for him now? All the players Pittsburgh acquired have multiple years left on their contracts.

But Pittsburgh is the greatest team ever so they will get Parise AND Suter and win multiple Cups for years to come.

Now maybe I missed something but didn't Staal basically bailed out because he was playing in the Shadow of Malkin and Crosby? But Parise who is the Devils Captain would be ok with playing 3rd fiddle?

What happened to being objective and writing logical commentaries? I really hate sports writers that write illogical, biased stories.

Guest Hatethedrake!

The media is jumping on the Pens bandwagon once again. I still believe Parise and Suter will be Red Wings on July 1st. Nothing is guaranteed of course. However, the Pens have to trade Martin first. Kudos to Shero for finding a sucker er I mean partner for Michalek. Even if he does have the Cap space, why would Parise and Suter go to the Pens over the Wings? I recall the Pens being eliminated in the 1st round just like the Wings were.

Until Glen Sather trades his entire roster over so they can all play with Marc in NY.

Nope. Carolina's moving Jared and Eric to defense, and trading for Sid the Kid and Rick Nash.

Crosby, Staals, and Nash. Get a Young goalie and you've Got It Made. It's a Fair Game, so Teach Your Children Well.

Had to throw that last part in. Just a Song Before I Go.
