Question on Lidstrom's banner raising date

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

I am 22 years old and have been a die hard wings fan my while life (enough where the only tattoo that I have is a wings tat) and Nick Lidstrom has always been my favorite player. The main question in my mind since the schedule has been released is does anybody know when the banner raising game is suppose to take place for Lidstroms retirement (because we all know it will happen)? Even tho ticket are not on sale yet I would like to know cuase it would irritate me for a long time if I missed out on the opportunity to be at this game. Any help on this would be appreciated.

It's still very early after his retirement for there to be a set date already. I'd assume as per the norm that very early in the season would be a good bet. As soon as news of this hits i'm sure someone will post a thread about it.

It'll be a headline story on TSN for sure. They eat stuff like that up, especially a guy with Nick's prestige.

The Winter Classic would be perfect. The huge crowd. The national exposure. The Original 6 rival of days gone by.

Everything you could ask for... except rafters. Too bad they decided to play it outdoors.

If Yzerman's wasn't until January you better believe that Lidstrom's won't be till mid season, to be honest it's an insult to Yzerman if his number is retired at all this season. Only Howe and Yzerman are the only two Red Wings to get their number retired immediately. Lidstrom can wait a year or two like the others. (or 30-40 in some cases lol)

What exactly is the logic to this? Does the date in the season really matter?

Besides, Nick absolutely deserves it immediately. Stevie Y is my favorite Red Wing ever, but I will argue any day that Lidstrom was the team's best/most important player during this historic run. Yzerman himself said as much.

This doesn't make any sense.

There was talk around here a while ago about how many games into the season his number should be retired. I haven't reviewed the actual season schedule when Yzerman's was retired but it very well could have been the 19th home game. By my calculations from last season that did fall mid-January. If that has any real significance then it might be near the beginning of the season.

I am sure there will be a ticket frenzy when that game is announced.

Steve may be the most influential Wing ever

A. We've never seen Howe play

B. Nothing that honors Nick Lidstrom can be considered an insult

C. Steve might be the most influential Wing ever, but Lidstrom is the greatest Red Wing to have ever laced the skates, bar none.

I don't think you will find anyone out there who would say Lidstrom was better than Gordie Howe

Yzerman's was the 20th game of the season, perhaps they picked a date where they figured ticket sales would need a boost? It was against the Ducks so who knows.
