In this market, I think its going to take an uncomfortable amount of term to get Semin at $5m/season. In which case, I would be very... annoyed. How many half-time scorers can you have signed for 8+ years?

our D-men would have to step up and play great all season but other than that, I don't think I'd have a problem with this at all.. I for one would love to have semin playing with datsyuk.

and i think us signing "the monster" was our smartest move so far.. finally howard has a solid back up so he's not completely drained towards the end of the season/playoffs from playing around 60 games a season.

i would like to see nyq up on teh top line with pav and semin though, move helm to third line center and move mule to third line/maybe end up switching him with brunner or nyq eventually... not sure how that would make the fourth line look though but i'd like to see something like that to start the season.

I don't know if they're a Cup contender even if they sign Parise and Suter. As for Semin, I actually think he's a better fit for this team, as well as a whole lot cheaper. I think we would be crazy to pay Parise the kind of money that I am hearing that some other teams have offered him. He scores goals, but he is not pure goal-scorer - and he looked like crap in the Finals! Semin isn't a pure goal-scorer, either, but he's a right-handed shot, and that is something this team can use.

But we really need Suter.

I think Babs would be pissed at Helm not centering the 3rd line since he said last week that Helm is the best 3rd line centre in the game bar none. As for Semin and Carle...I would not be pissed. Would I see this team still being able to compete for the Cup? Maybe. Win it? Things would really have to go their way for that to happen.

We would need huge leaps for young kids like Nyquist/Brunner/Quincy/Smith and even Ericsson. But I'd say the same if we got Suter/Parise.

The most important thing about next year isn't who we get in free agency, it's going to be how our players develop. Because one player isn't going to make a difference if none of those pieces step up and become good NHL players, we aren't going to win it all. It's not about having a playoff team, it's about having a Stanley Cup team.

I'd be ok with it, I'm not the biggest Semin fan, but his rewards outweigh his risks, and I like the idea of him playing with Datsyuk. Carle is a very good puck moving defensemen, pretty young too. I'd be content with it going into the season. Also have some capspace for the trade deadline.

Well yes I'd be "ok" with those 2.

I'd just also prefer to sign a 4th line center or maybe trade one. We have a logjam at forward.

I'm afraid that this roster is about the same or worst than our line up last year. You've added a little on the offense but haven't shored up the defence. Carle might replace Stuart but you're missing Lidstrom's minutes, skill, and leadership. This roster would get in on 6th spot and be out in 1 round ...

why are people so high on Carle? Just two seasons ago Tampa and Philly played a ping-pong game with Carle and suddenly he is going to get 5M. I watched Philly multiple times this season and he did not impress that much.... Well, to be honest Suter did not impress me as well last season. Well, I can understand that Suter is always in the shadow of Weber but still.

PS Semin would be good addition for not more than 5.5-6M per season for say 4-5 years.

PPS Getting rod of Emmerton is a must for this offseason to be successful. Get a legitimate 4th line center.

What you have to hope for is big steps in production from the young guys.

People wanted the Wings to get younger, and they will be next year.

And double pissed for a 3rd line center who couldn't win faceoffs because he's actually a LW.

Don't you have your own thread to post your never ending lines?

I wouldn't mind if you actually wrote something with substance to go along with all your lines, but this thread is as thin as a lot of people's patience with the constant line threads spam.

Stop spamming.

Now, I disagree I think it's much more likely that Quincy becomes a Norris winner and Nyquist scores 100 than Franzen actually playing hard every shift of the year.

I wouldn't mind Semin myself but he is a one way player and not a very good locker room guy. Wings have good leadership and I think they could handle him and he would add scoring

I understand that perspective and understand if they don't go in that direction. But as I have thought more about this, I really think that the chance for a Russian player of Semin's age to play with Datsyuk is almost as powerful as the draw that playing with Sidney Crosby might have for a North American player (like Parise). Whereas guys like Ovechkin (and perhaps even Malkin) are more likely to run their mouth, and are more polarizing, Datysuk seems to be universally respected. He's also a very unselfish superstar, so even though it hasn't always been the case that you simply insert ______ sniper on the wing next to Datysuk and you get a 40-goal scorer, players like Semin might perceive it to be that way.

I also think that the veterans on this team (even minus Lidstrom), not to mention Babcock and the front office can control him, at least well enough. Yes, his lack of defense will be infuriating, but this team falls asleep offensively far too often, and Semin has the ability to significantly help that.

The problem is how you evaluate a guy like this. There's a reason he's been on a string of 2 or 1-year deals. But he's also gotten a raise up to $6.7 million. If he wants more than 3 years, it could be a problem. Then again, I think he might be a perpetual KHL flight risk, so he may not even want a long-term NHL deal.

I'm really intrigued by him, if we figure out how to add to the defense, which is the top priority.

I fear that I brought this thread into existence with my baseless prediction in another thread that Holland gets Semin and Carle instead of Parise and Suter.

Exactly my thoughts. Semin on the top line with Datsyuk and you're looking at 40+ goals for Semin imo.

I'd be ok with a healthy Cleary + Helm + Brunner on 3rd line.

4th line could be a good one with a legit Center who's tough and a faceoff specialist. Put someone like that with Abdelkader and Tootoo and that's 4 good lines.

Our defense, iyam, is filled with bottom 4 dmen with the exception of Kronwall. We need more of those guys that are legit top pairing dmen. Suter I don't think is the greatest thing ever and we'd definitely be overpaying him BUT with the possibility of him bringing Weber and there's no one else available that's close to him we HAVE to sign Suter.

As much as I would love to get both Parise (Im not too sure we will) and Suter (I am optimistic) , I would not mind us picking up Semin and Carle if we needed to.

I feel that both could fit very well into this line up.

Semin playing with Datsyuk was scary good at the World Championships and I feel that Carle would be an upgrade over Stuart. Then the next task would be finding a Dman to replace Lidstrom through trade which will be easier said than done.

I think it would be in our best interest to land Suter and not have to worry about finding D through trade.

There's about 5 mil leftover to mess around with in that cap-sheet I pasted. I don't there'd be a problem signing him. We might even get a discount because he really wants to play with Pav, and in our system

I'd ALMOST go as far to say that I'd rather sign Semin than Parise. Semin, it's just such a question mark what kind of effort you're going to get, and it's the exact opposite with Parise, so you can't say more than that. But, ideally, Semin might actually be a better fit. He's a more skilled players, probably one of the top 5 skilled players in the game. He's more of a natural goal-scorer, which we really need. He's a deadly right-handed shot from the point on the power play.

I think this would still be a good team for the Wings. The downside is that Carle isn't near as good defensively as Suter, but arguably a little better offensively. Semin can potentially provide better offensive than Parise, though he doesn't add Parise's grit or defense (however, Semin is underrated defensively).

I wouldn't be too worried about it. The Wings are still loaded on front end defensive play and pretty good on back end defensive play. My main concern with Carle over Suter is having Suter on the team gives a lot more leeway to set some of our offensive d-men, especially Smith, loose offensively.

Personally I don't want either, Semin always seemed like a Franzen type, and if we don't get Suter then go after a big name D-man no matter the cost, cuz your gonna need a big name defenseman to take some of the pressure off from losing a top notch Lidstrom.
