Opinions if Wings have to settle for 'Plan B': Semin and Carle

Stay pat Stay pat Stay pat Stay pat Stay pat.

Why don't we for once see how far the kids are in their development?

Nyquist, Tatar, Mursak, Smith and Järnkrok show your worth.

If we do that well struggle just to make the playoffs.

There's no 1st line defender available in free-agency. The one guy we wanted (Suter) is gone.

Don't sign a second level guy to a long-term deal, just because you have money ... that limits what you can do in the future.

They lost the only guy they really needed (Suter) ... can't panic now. Sign Quincey and get a veteran on short deal for the 3rd pairing.

Just have to wait for the next great free agent ... or trade.

Carle isn't the kind of guy that can be the franchise d-man... Suter was. I don't see the Wings going after him as hard as they did with Suter. I think it's more likely they look at the trade market if they're still looking for a #1 D-man

we missed out on both guys,so life goes on. I really think that Smith can be as good as Suter in a year or two. I just wish we had given him time last year with Nic so he could have learned off the best. I think that we have Weber next year, just got to get thru this year and give the youngsters some ice to benefit us long term. It may be hard going but i think we have enough to make the playoffs if we can get at least another 2 senior players on board then im sure we will.

maybe Pasha gets on the phone and gets some of his countrymen over here who havent played here before, you know so other teams dont know how they play. Ilya Nikulin,Alexander Popov and Alexei Tereshenko would do for me!! :colgate:

I will be mad if the Wings make a trade. There is no one I want to give up from the farm or team save the worthless ones.

People shouldn't panic, the team shouldn't overpay. They will be fine and Smith/Kindl will work as fine as anyone. We won't replace Lidstrom this way but that wasn't going to happen anyways.

This was the worst offseason of the cap era without a doubt. I don't care about not getting Parise, but Suter hurts. I wanted Weber more than all three of them so I hope they SIGN him next year without a trade.

The farm is too good to touch.Keep signing bodies for compettion but don't overpay anyone. I would love to see us sign Muller, Semin, Rozsival, Carle, all to short term deals and hopefully they win jobs without costing us anyone. Trade roster players if need be, but leave the farm alone. The best part would be if we brought in more people we can bounce Tootoo to GR and let him rot.

I agree. There are a couple teams who might be willing to deal high end defensemen for the right price, but I doubt it's a price we'd be able to manage. But Detroit definitely needs to make an addition on the back end, even if it's a 7th defenseman.

I thought the earlier suggestion of Franson was a good one. He's a young guy, a bit soft for his size, but put up some points in NSH and I think was under utilized in Toronto in an attempt to give Komisarek some playing time. In fact, Komisarek is another option -- huge, also a rightly. He's played poorly in Toronto to say the least, so it would be a risk. But if Brian Burke is looking to unload his contract (which we are in a position to absorb), he could be had cheaply and I would be excited to see if he could find his game here. Best case scenario: he plays like he did with Markov and you've got yourself a #2 d man. Worst case: he plays crappy and you've got yourself a #6/7 for the next 2 seasons at 4.5 mil of Illich's pocket change.

UFA alternatives right now aren't a whole lot better: Kubina and Rozsival have been mentioned. Both would probably be best in lesser roles as they have struggled with some recent injuries, but even this past season, Rozsival was managing 20 minutes a night. I think he would be a worthy pick up if he could be had for 2 million for a year or two. Not equally as confident with Kubina.

It really isn't. Our farm is overrated by the fanbase here.

I agree, not so much on the overrated aspect but simply believing a farm is ever "too good to touch." Sure, there's some pieces we would definitely want to hold on to, but the reality is there are also pieces that are expendable if they help us get what we need right now. There is a balance between mortgaging the future and not shaking things up at all. Just like there is a balance between blowing up your whole roster and not being willing to trade any current spot-holders at all...

I watch them, they are not scrubs. Three guys are bonafide top six guys, and one more is likely a top six guy. On defense there is one for sure guy that is top four, and at least one that is likely a top four. I consider at least two more of the d for sure NHL guys, and at least two for sure NHL guys at forward. That doesn't sound like a ton... but you don't trade them.

Why? Because if you looked at what is going on in the NHL... there is no one in FA because people will lock up their own. We were betting on Free agents for two years and there are almost none to sign.

You are wrong to think our farm is crap. It isn't the best in the world, and it doesn't have many sure things... but it is far from the worst and you people keep thinking there isn't stars in the system. Remember this... Hudler got paid and was the 8th ranked FA this year in the UFA pool... If you think they should trade people just remember what we are setting ourselves up for...

Also, people sleeping on Semin because he is lazy are borderline delusional. He isn't a Datsyuk or Doan in terms of effort and consistency... but he is an amazing player. He rivaled Ovie for the best player on the team many times, and bested him consistently in defensive play. That combined with speed makes him an excellent addition at the right price.
