LeftWinger 4,951 Report post Posted July 15, 2012 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6j4JBkqsFG8 While pondering the idea of not getting anymore D help other than Q once he is awarded a contract, it would be nice to see this kid in Detroit for some games here and there (if it's possible)...he is the next D in line on the prospects list behind Smith and l am pretty impressed with him. His highlight vid looks just as impressive as the Justin Schultz one that everyone has watched...at 19 years old he is 6'3" but only 186lbs. By time he hits 21 I am sure he will weigh more...he is big and a right handed shot...that shot looks pretty impressive from what I see here. I think the Wings D is in good shape, Suter-less and when this kid is ready to be here fulltime, I think he will become a very solid and dominant player... 5 Bar Down, WingsAlways, redwingfan19 and 2 others reacted to this
ogreslayer 1,069 Report post Posted July 15, 2012 I believe he's set to go back for 1 more season in the OHL this year so the wheels would have to completely fall off for him to see time with the big club this year. I would think the next call-up from GR if needed will be Lashoff.
Wings_Toledo 233 Report post Posted July 15, 2012 This kid has a cannon of a shot and looks like he isn't afraid to hit. Good mobility and likes to join the rush. Sounds like he'll fit right in with the Wings' system!

He either has to make the Wings from the start or play in jr. He will play in the OHL
heikks86 21 Report post Posted July 15, 2012 he hasn't even signed an entry level contract yet so its unlikely you will see him for awhile. Lashoff is the most likely in line to be the first call up right now
ogreslayer 1,069 Report post Posted July 15, 2012 The prospect that intrigues me on d is Nicastro out of Boston U. 6'3" & 210 already and supposedly a banger along with having some pretty good offensive skill too. If he impresses in camp & in the first part of the season in GR, I could see him jumping into that first call-up spot if the big club needs bodies.

Yes, he is 22 and huge...he should get a good look this fall and really get some time in GR. He is not on the top 25 prospect list right now, but he is sure to climb the ladder if he continues the way he is going...Give McKee a couple of years at WMU and a couple in GR and he too will be a force in Detroit. Nicastro is another right hander too! I am also looking forward to big things (no pun) from Bodin in a few years... If Holland lands Weber, he and Smith, Q and Kronwall are going to lead the way for all these kids and it looks, right now, that it's gonna be a bright future on D in the D... (cannot forget Kindl and Ericsson) Yes, things look very good...I still would love for Holland to add DeKeyser to the mix as well...
dropkickshanahans 463 Report post Posted July 15, 2012 (edited) Don't forget about Ouellet as well in a few years. Edited July 15, 2012 by dropkickshanahans
newfy 695 Report post Posted July 15, 2012 The wings defensive prospect pool is really exciting to me for the first time in a few years. Smith is a stud but the other guys are pretty good as well Jensen comes out of nowhere as a late round pick and is doing very solid in college. Hes big, fast, can hit and is a very offensive type of guy. Hes come a long way for such alate pick Sproul is also big, fast, can hit and is very good offensively. He has sky high potential but is still somewhat raw. If he keeps developing the way he is, he could be a stud on the PP in the future Ouellet is much more polished then Sproul but doesnt have as high of potential I wuoldnt say. Looks like a pretty sure bet to be an NHLer because he does a bit of everything. Plays well defensively, puts up some points, can play very good positionally, occasionally fights and throws a big hit. Hes a swiss army knife type On top of all that, the wings finally have the nastiness on the blue line coming up that theyve lacked a bit. All these top guys have a bit of a mean streak but guys like Nicastro, Nedomlel, and Mckee all bring a legit mean streak to the game. If one or 2 of these guys work out, no one will be coming near Howard in the future 2 WingsAlways and St. Michael (the Red Wing) reacted to this

newfy 695 Report post Posted July 15, 2012 A swiss army knife? So if he could play forward he'd be Derek Meech. Or Brad Stuart. Meech only hit 38 points once in junior and he played with Phaneuf if I'm not mistaken. Ouellet was already a point per game and a first team all star while still having a year of junior left. Not to mention his main trait isnt his point production and hes already putting those up. So in short, nothing like Meech
egroen 384 Report post Posted July 15, 2012 Then there's Backman and Marchenko who might end up as huge steals, plus Almquist who joins GR this year. They've done a great job of restocking the prospect pool on defense. If he impresses in camp & in the first part of the season in GR, I could see him jumping into that first call-up spot if the big club needs bodies. If I recall correctly, he was drafted more for his offense and skating, then proceeded to gain 4 inches and a mean streak to go along with it.

Yeah the wings brass actually compared his style to Lidstrom at one point. Now he might be the most physical prospect in the wings entire system. If he has those basic puck skills and can skate, while he might never be a producer, he could be an Andy Sutton type.

Yeah,Backman plays like a NHL veteran based on what I saw during the WJHC,which is amazing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&NR=1&v=G5mgipR-mJA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcI-6-ewrUU
