Logo Hunter vs. Missing the Net - Fight!

I have seen a lot of references to Samuellson as a logo hunter. I have also personally observed the RIDICULOUS amount of times that Franzen entirely misses the net. I submit to you that it is better to be a logo hunter with a nominal chance of getting a rebound goal, then entirely miss the net like Franzen! In short, it would be better if Franzen were more of a logo hunter.

Anyone who disagrees is downright silly. ;)

Logo Hunter and Shinguard Assassin might be Sammy's best nicknames, but he and Franzen could both be called High-and-Wide. Sammy is just as bad as Franzen when it comes to missing the net. If I see much more coasting from Franzen this season (a given), then he is no longer Mule, he is Rosebud.

Mule tries to pick the corners too much and misses the net because of it. Logo Hunter knows no other way to shoot the puck. Together they form the dynamic duo named...The Net Nazis...NO NET FOR YOU!

The difference between hitting top shelf and sending it high and wide is marginal. I don't hear anyone complaining when they go in up there. In fact, I'm pretty sure people say something to the tune of 'nice shot'.

missing the net also leads to breaks going the other way quickly... it can be a lot more dangerous in some cases (short of firing it right off the shinguards and then being kicked back going the other way)

With that said, Sammy misses the net just as much as Franzen AND fires it into chests, shins, asses, etc... quite frequently... he shoots, which is nice, as we have too many guys even reluctant to do that, I just wish he picked a little higher percentage shots before firing and also, KEPT HIS SHOT DOWN...

With that said, BOTH of them need to have better years this year, than they did last year...

Most hockey players miss the majority of their shots. If they put them all in the net they would be gods.

Please read the OP as you seem to be confused. After doing so, replace 'Most hockey players miss the majority of their shots' with 'Most hockey players miss the net on the majority of their shots'. This would bring your statement into context. Would you stand by that revised statement?

Good point. I seem to remember Ericcson missing the net on a slap shot from the right point that swung around the boards and led to a fast break goal for the Penguins in the 2009 finals. Someone feel free to fact check me on that.

Would I be completely out of line to say that Pav misses the net a lot too.......?

HERETIC!!!

My main concern with Franzen is not necessarily his choice of shots/intended targets. It's more a threefold case of his work ethic (or lack thereof), his hesitance to use his size when working for the puck, and his incredible streakiness. Even giving him the benefit of the doubt on the work ethic and reluctance to use his size, those are still things that are perceived problems of his. And we all know that in most instances, perception is reality.

That said, Franzen has shown the ability to be an absolute lights-out force on the ice (The Colorado series in '08 is a testament to that). If only he could show a little consistency...

And I think Sammy will essentially help balance out the loss of Hudler. Sammy will probably be better on the point on the PP than Rex was, but has more questions regarding injuries.

Zetterberg is usually the Wings king of missed shots, this past season was the first time Franzen has taken the crown from him.

Although as much as Franzen misses the net he had the 3rd best shooting % of the entire team behind only Hudler and Flip and he had the 2nd most shots on goal behind only Zetterberg.

His amount of misses has a lot to do with the amount of shots he takes.

You also must have read my posts from last year where i bitched over and over again that if Franzen could hit the net, he could also top at least 40 goals. I don't care if he's trying to pick the corners, fact is he's missing the corners and often by quite a lot. Practice harder and lock the sights Johan! Love the OP.

90% of his shots go high and wide. The ones that hit the net are good, but when you miss the net 9 out of 10 times, you are a derp.

To broaden the topic a little bit, my wife and I have both commented at times on how often the Red Wings as a team miss the net. Certain players stand out, Franzen (as mentioned) and Cleary seemed to be common culprits if my memory serves, but I am really talking about the team as a whole. At times, I thought "how are these guys pro's if they can't hit the dang net?" After certain games where we missed the net left and right I thought that Babcock should have reamed out everyone for it and then devoted a whole practice to just making sure shots are on net. Anyone else ever observe the same?

Of course there are exceptions... Kronwall and Lidstrom (unless he missed on purpose) seemed to do a good job of putting puck on net.

1 out of every 3 shots he takes goes wide, which is too much, but when you're achieving the same or better shooting % numbers than guys like Perry, Malkin, Neal, Crosby, and Ovechkin I'm not sure its worth complaining about.

Not singling you out on this, but sometimes I think fans won't be happy with Franzen unless he scores 50 and puts up 100 pts.

Players on other teams never miss the net. Only Red Wings miss the net.

I think it's just a reflection overall of the players currently on the roster and some of the offensive strategies often used. There are some more common culprits mentioned already (Sammy and Franzen come to mind most for me too), but even players like Filppula and Helm blow a lot of quality scoring chances with their inability to finish.

Adding to that, I also believe that a perimeter-oriented team is going to hit a lot of goaltender logos and defenders shin guards because of the area where a good chunk of shots are coming from. Everyone on the Red Wings was drilling Rinne in the chest because everything was directed on net from the perimeter.

Lack of pure goal-scorers. Been a problem since Hossa left and still is to this day.

Wait, Hudler leaving is a loss?
