evilmrt 636 Report post Posted August 24, 2012 Probably not, since its an official NHL event, with the NHL logos and names and all of that. That being said, it could easily go ahead re-branded as something else since its being held in a non-nhl venue. Probably without the current names and logos...maybe some old throwback names and logos would do the trick (Detroit Cougars vs. Toronto St. Patricks, for example). 1 55fan reacted to this

If the WC is lost to a lockout, I would love it if the the Wings & Leafs do go ahead with a rebranded alumni game and donate proceeds to their respective arena staff who are the ones that really get royally screwed in a lockout. Why would you think anything would be impacted beyond the NHL? Original question....if the NHL is not operating, the Alumni game at the WC won't be happening. They don't directly work with the NHL therefore, they wouldn't experience a lockout. Last lockout we had wing players go play for the Griffs. Currently the junior leagues are working on making player unions, well the players are. The lockout deals with the collective bargaining agreement with the NHL and those entities tied directly to it. rrasco 1,312 Report post Posted August 24, 2012 I'm sure if they cancel the WC there will be enough advance where they don't spend millions building these rinks so everything would more than likely be moved somewhere else (AHL, OHL, CCHA) and/or cancelled in respect to the Alumni game. Because its a package deal, if the season is lost would you rather have the ohl ahl and college games or save the whole package till 2014, see where im going with this? Will there be a second chance in 2014 or will the winter classic go to another city because they played out the ohl ahl and college outdoor games.
luvmnger 125 Report post Posted August 25, 2012 apparantly, the NHL has an agreement to call it off the day before, and no punishment. they set this in motion along with the payoff from NBC so they couldnt be used against them in case of a lock out. the players union is trying to use the winter classic as leverage to not lock out past this date for the expected revenue is sppose to be the biggest yet. so, hypothetically, if the day grows near, the arenas are up, the hotels are sold out, and then, "like pricks" they call it off. would the other games go on as scheduled? i am pretty sure that the UM has to have the ability to use the arena to their discretion if the NHL backs out. someone is paying the crews to assemble, maintain and disassemble. if the NHL backs out, who pays?
