Redden collected a big paycheck and disappeared. If I remember right hes still getting way overpaid and has a pretty nightmarish contract, something like 6.5 mil a season.

I read an article lately that listed the 15 worst contracts in sports history and Redden was on the list. He has nothing to contribute anymore for the money.

Bouwmeester should be on that list also. I wouldn't want Redden but because he could be had for nothing, he would be a much better acquisition than Bouwmeester because they bring comparable on-ice value to a team

Were Redden able to play at a level equivalent to Bouwmeester, he would be spending his time in the NHL. He was dumped into the minors because he was not playing NHL-caliber hockey.

Bouwmeester isn't a premiere defenseman, but he's far more effective than Redden.

How is Redden anywhere comparable? Bouwmeester has his faults (especially for that contract), but he still plays 25 minutes per game in the NHL. Sure, you can get Redden for nothing but that's only because he's actually worth nothing.

Back in the mid/late 90's - wasn't Redden considered a pretty good top 2 Dman when he was with the Sens?

I never really paid too much attention to him (having a soft spot for the Leafs I do recall all those great playoff match-ups with the Sens back when Toronto had a NHL calibre team), but I do recall seeing him play alot...I just cannot remember when his game took a nose dive - thus him playing in the AHL.

He signed a huge contract with the Rangers and managed 40 points in his first 156 games. Apparently he wasn't too hot on defense either. He's currently the highest-paid player in the history of the AHL. I've read that he makes more for one game than many members of his team make in an entire season.

He was a legitimate defenseman during his tenure with Ottawa. Signed a huge contract with the Rangers prior to the '08/'09 season. His offensive production was minimal after that. On top of that, he wasn't the most sound defensively.

He signed a big contract and you can't win paying average players like premier players so he has been toiling in the minors so the Rangers don't have to count him against the cap, exactly where Bouwmeester should be but the Flames aren't smart enough to realize it and are going to miss the playoffs yet again unless they can get him off of their cap count and replace him with someone worth their pay somehow, which should make Iginla available next year

Do you really classify seven years ago as "not too long ago"? That thread was made in the summer of 2005, two months before the first post-lockout season began. Datsyuk was an untested youngster with a history of playoff disappearance, and Redden was in the prime of his career. Today Datsyuk is unquestionably one of the best forwards in the world, and Redden has spent the past two seasons in the AHL.

Redden is an average NHL defenseman who looked a lot better than he is because of his partner. He signed a big contract and you can't win paying average players like premier players so he has been toiling in the minors so the Rangers don't have to count him against the cap,

I believe it was after his mother passed away after battling cancer. Dude got pretty depressed and his game went to s***. I recall that being the story. Used to be a big Redden fan.

For 500k it'd be worth a shot sure, otherwise hell nahhh. It's been 4 years since he was an average defenseman in the NHL, and probably about 5 years since he was above average, that's a long time.

As for Redden I really haven't followed his status for the last few seasons so Ill just assume based on he's playing in the minors and cost that dough, no thank you.
