While looking at the Franzen trade bait article I came across this gem. It says what the dumb move each team made this offseason is, and apparently the Wings' 1 bad one is not signing Ryan Suter.

Article for Wings part:

Yes, Detroit had no power in where Ryan Suter chose to play next season, but the price for Suter not signing in Detroit will be heavy for the Red Wings. With the retirement of Nick Lidstrom and departure of Brad Stuart, the Red Wings' defense is now led by Niklas Kronwall.

No offense to Kronwall, but he is a huge step down from the likes of Lidstom and Suter. The Red Wings needed to bring in a replacement and they couldn't.

For the first time in a long time, things are not looking so good in the Motor City.

I bolded my favorite parts. Their 1 dumb move is something they had no control over, and apparently Kronwall is a huge step down from not only Lidstrom (understandable...who isn't?) and also Suter... I call BS on the 2nd one.

Figured i'd comment on the Wings one. But since things are so slow with CBA talks at a halt, let's hash over all of them...

i think our dumb move was putting all our hopes on 2 guys, and then getting hooked up in their waiting game.

monster and brunner had me excited, then the wheels fell off.

sammy and tootoo?

really?

i dont know who i should be mad at, holland, for holding on to the suter/parise idea too long or suter/parise for playing the waiting game and severly altering the landscape of free agency.

holland needed to step off his position of offer sheets, and start doing whats best for the team. the nice guy approach worked for a while, but teams have grown tired of us being on the winning side for too long.

if he were to make 2 or 3 offers this off season, yes he would piss off some owners, but the commitment to success would speak volumes to the players and that just make detroit a potential hot spot again.

right now i feel we are 2-3 players away from our rightful throne as champions.

as of july 1st. these guys were available to offer sheets....

RFA evander kane still available

RFA ekman larsson signed

RFA del zotto still available

RFA perron signed

RFA oshie signed

RFA erik johnson signed

RFA ryan o'reilly still available

RFA ennis still available

RFA carlson still available

RFA fayne signed

RFA petry signed

if holland would have used the "post lidstrom" event to change his approach, we could be looking at quite the different team right now. even waitng till now could land ennis, kane, del zotto, o'reilly or carlson

free agency/offer sheets have become the only way the wings can improve, the trade market is jaded towards the wings.

the days of acquiring shanahan, hasek, lang, and chelios caliber players in trades, are over.

I have a hard time being mad at Holland for the simple fact that as you said, teams are tired of seeing the Wings so successful and they don't want to add to it by trading with us and for the fact that Nyquist and Smith both get a legit shot this year to make the team and the addition of a guy like Brunner may be the recipe for Dats cracking 100 points. There's a lot of potential with this team and while Suter/Parise would have made the Wings instant cup favorites, there's nothing that could have been done to lure them here cause family reasons took them to Minnesota. I think that Kenny did what he could and i'm pretty excited for the season to start whenever it does and to see Nyquist, Smith and Brunner wearing the Winged Wheel.

And not signing Hudler shows me he's not gonna overpay for a guy who rides coat tails of better players. And that along with signing Brunner is the Wings best move this offseason.

I'd say the Wings dumb move was a lack of transition plan for losing Stuart and Lids which is why the ended up competing so hard in the Suter sweepstakes.

I'm still interested in whom you feel the Wings should have picked up, and how.

As much fun as it is to hear you crap on trade proposals, I've already made my position clear several times regarding the flawed reasoning of your "name who" game.

If you're still interested, you're more than welcome to go back and read them.

Our dumb move was giving Sammy a No Trade Clause. Other than that, I'm not too upset about the signings, or lack thereof, given how things have played out.

...maybe, I'd have liked to have seen if Semin would have signed a one year deal here for less than what he did in Carolina. Oh well, the NTC with Sammy was dumber.

Bryan Allen would have been a nice start for at least replacing Stuart and adding something to a defense that lost two top-four players this offseason.

Now I suppose the rebuttal will come of why Allen sucks, so your never-ending circular argument always comes out in your favor.

Well it's not like the salary cap will end up going down significantly, leaving them to cut a huge amount of salary when the season actually starts. Oh wait....

What's funny about this scenario is, Ryan Suter said he called Dany Heatley and asked him if they could win in Minnesota and Heatley said "yes" and that made his decision to scoff the Wings and go with in-laws a little easier, so if the cap goes down and they have to dump salary, Heatley will be the one traded... I find this very ironic and f**ckin All-Star hilarious!

on a side note, I cannot wait for Suter to regret being swayed by his in-laws...verbal agreement with Detroit, then persuaded to go to Minny by wife and her family...for basically pennies more (when it comes to the millions he signed for) that is sad...so sad...

Minnesota wont drop Heatley. Cullen and Bouchard will be axed first.

I don't even know why he was given a NTC, it's not like there will be teams asking about him at the deadline...but in reality, Sammy replaces Hudler's offense and is a lot more physical and a ton better defensively, so with that I believe the Wings upgraded with Sammy over Hudler....Tootoo brings to this team something that we have lacked since Aaron Downey circa 2008 and Monster is an upgrade to Conklin and MacDonald.

I too would have loved to have Semin (ok that sounded gross) on this team along with Doan or Parise or Suter or Ryan or Nash...etc...but looking at last season, I don't think we are too far off from that except for the Lidstrom replacement...and even then, near the end of the season and playoffs Lidstrom was playing sub-human...I dislike Quincey, but he will be a fine replacement for Stuart and Smith will be great this year. Kronwall will top 40 points (he will outscore Suter, quote me on that (as long as he stays healthy))

The Wings only have 6 defenders signed and the need for a 7th is there for sure. I feel that unless teams need to have a fire sale after the CBA, that defender will be a #4 - #6ish in the pecking order... I really think that Smith is going to be better than we envision and soon it will be Suter who?

So if our only dumb move was not signing Suter, then I think that we may be the only team to not actually have made a dumb move...

I think the point you're making is that even with a sub-human Lidstrom, we were ok, so we'll be ok.

Problem is, we were terrible.

I agree that more could have been done to smooth the transition, but probably not too much this offseason. I would have liked to have seen Holland sign Bryan Allen, but short of that, most of the defensemen this offseason went way too high. The last two years were where the work probably ought to have been done.

You guys are now just figuring this out? Crysmon has been negatively rebuking ideas on here for ages.

Holland needs to resign Holmstrom to make this the worst stretch of general managing in a long time.

Agreed.

that's really my point. Holland took a hard run at Suter and actually participated in ridiculous salary offers, which he usually doesn't. A big part of the reason is because he he hadn't made any moves the last few seasons to prepare for Lidstrom's (and Stuart's) inevitable departure.
