kylee 727 Report post Posted September 8, 2012 Exactly as the title says, I've always been interested in learning about the evolution of the game and i know a minute amount of facts from the early days of hockey and its development and growth in Canada and North America. Can anyone recommend a good book or documentary online that talks about the actual evolution of the game itself and the culture surrounding it in detail? I'd love to learn more! I've come across a few web pages online and I know of CBC's documentary from like 6 years ago, but maybe I'll get lucky and find out more and better information! For example, one of the original rules of hockey out of Halifax (there was two major "schools" of hockey very early on, one in Montreal and in Halifax), was that you could not pass the puck/wood block forward -- only side to side or backwards to advance your team. thanks everybody
X13WINGS13X 25 Report post Posted September 8, 2012 If you have any interest in managing, scouting, and other business aspects of the game, Behind the Moves: NHL GMs is an amazing book. Its a little pricey but worth it. Another great read on more recent hockey history, with some great stories on the Wings is Road to Hockeytown by Jim Devellano. You mentioned learning about canadian hockey schools but possibly my favorite is Road to Olympus by Anatoly Tarasov, who was the creator of the Soviet hockey school. As far as documentaries are concerned, I really haven't seen any that really fit what youre looking for
cusimano_brothers 1,655 Report post Posted September 9, 2012 The second earliest written account of the origins of the game in Canada happened not too far from here.
Marty Barry 230 Report post Posted September 9, 2012 (edited) I like the movie "Net Worth". It is the story of how Ted Lindsay and co. started the first players union. How he tried to get the biggest name in the game, Gordie, to help out and his resistance to it. Plus you get a movie about the Wings. Sorry, I guess this isnt really a documentary. Still, a decent view for a Wingnut. Edited September 9, 2012 by Marty Barry
joshy207 156 Report post Posted September 10, 2012 There's a great documentary on the '72 Summit Series. I don't know exactly what it's called, but I've seen it on CBC and NHL Network. It's not about the "origins" of hockey, but that series did set the tone for international rivalries that still exist, and it made the Canadians aware that they were no longer alone at the top of the hockey world. cusimano_brothers 1,655 Report post Posted September 10, 2012 The CBC documentary Hockey: A People's History is worth a look and there is a companion book available.
