Kronwall:

-He's a capable top-paring defenseman.

-Tough to tell how he'll play with more ice time.

-He's worth his current contract.

-Ehhh..40 points?

Filppula:

-He has reached his prime

-4 years, $14 mil.

-Lines change so much these days.

-I would offer him the above contract.

-25 goals, 45 assists, 70 points.

Howard:

-Definitely a top 20. I'd even go top 15. Not too sure about top 10.

-Everyone will suffer from the loss of Lidstrom.

-4 years, $14 mil.

-I would offer him the above contract.

This is cool. Keep this up, Irishock.

a) Is he a #1, #2 or #3 defensemen on a cup contender? capable of being a #1. He's underrated a lot of the time

b) Will he play better or worse with more overall ice time? better.

c) Is he worth his current contract (4.75 mil cap hit, 6yrs)? yes. Other teams would easily pay him more than that.

d) Predict his stats for an 82 game season

50ish points. Around 20 goals, 30 helpers..

Filppula, 28 years old

a) Has he reached his prime?

yes, but just the beginning of it.

b) Predict the economics of his next contract

similar to kronwall's.

c) Would you offer him the above contract

yes.

d) Should he play on Datsyuk's wing, Zetterberg's wing or center his own line?

hard to say. Either would work but I liked him on Z's line so I say keep him there.

e) Predict his stats for an 82 game season

about point per game, 30+ goals

Howard, 28 years old

a) Is he a top 10, top 15 or top 20 goaltender?

top 10, he's underrated a lot too.

b) Will his play suffer from the loss of Lidstrom to retirement? slightly but he'll be fine

c) Predict the economics of his next contract

somewhere around 4 mill for 4 years.

d) Would you offer him the above contract

yes. He's a great goalie. Maybe not elite but pretty d*** good.

Kronwall, 31 years old

a) Is he a #1, #2 or #3 defensemen on a cup contender? I think he is capable of a #1 spot, although #2 would suit him better

b) Will he play better or worse with more overall ice time? Better, I believe

c) Is he worth his current contract (4.75 mil cap hit, 6yrs)? yes

d) Predict his stats for an 82 game season 15 goals 30 assits - 40 points

Filppula, 28 years old

a) Has he reached his prime? Yes, but he has just gotten into it

b) Predict the economics of his next contract 4-4.5 mil cap hit - 5 years

c) Would you offer him the above contract In a heartbeat

d) Should he play on Datsyuk's wing, Zetterberg's wing or center his own line? I like him on Z's line, why fix something that isn't broken

e) Predict his stats for an 82 game season 22 goals 45 assists - 67 points

Howard, 28 years old

a) Is he a top 10, top 15 or top 20 goaltender? absolutely top 10, maybe even top 5

c) Predict the economics of his next contract 4 years 17 million

a) Is he a #1, #2 or #3 defensemen on a cup contender? He's right on the cusp, but still has to prove it this year.

b) Will he play better or worse with more overall ice time? Better. His totals will go up, and he will be relied upon more defensively.

c) Is he worth his current contract (4.75 mil cap hit, 6yrs)? Absolutely.

d) Predict his stats for an 82 game season 14 goals 35 assists.

Filppula, 28 years old
a) Has he reached his prime? He's right around it, I think the ceiling is even slightly higher, with his defensive game elevated a bit as well.

b) Predict the economics of his next contract He could get at least 4.5 on the open market, I think he'll sign fairly longterm around 4-4.3, for at least 5 years depending on the new CBA terms.

c) Would you offer him the above contract Yep. He's an important part of the team, even if he wants 4.5 I say we give it to him.

d) Should he play on Datsyuk's wing, Zetterberg's wing or center his own line? Either would work. I think it depends who the other linemates are. He is versatile, personally I prefer him with Z, but he's done quite well with Datsyuk in the past. If we had one or two more high caliber forwards I'd love to see him center a third line, but we just aren't there depth wise. Dats, Z, Fil, Helm down the middle looks pretty good though, provided they had the winger depth to make it work, which they don't at the moment.

e) Predict his stats for an 82 game season 25g 40a

Howard, 28 years old
a) Is he a top 10, top 15 or top 20 goaltender? Definitely top 15. Could make a case for top 10, but probably more like 10-12.

b) Will his play suffer from the loss of Lidstrom to retirement? Barely, if any. Lidstrom didn't play 60 minutes a night, and the overall defensive system is more important to a goalie's numbers than one individual's play.

c) Predict the economics of his next contract He could probably get a lot of money from one of the teams that are desperate in goal. I see him staying with Detroit on a 3ish year deal for between 3 and 4mil.

d) Would you offer him the above contract Yes.

Kronwall, 31 years old

a) Is he a #1, #2 or #3 defensemen on a cup contender? 2 or 3

b) Will he play better or worse with more overall ice time? He's never played on the top pairing that I can recall, so being up against the opponents star players every night is a big step up for him. I expect his stats to go up for sure as he will get more offensive opportunities.

c) Is he worth his current contract (4.75 mil cap hit, 6yrs)? Absolutely

d) Predict his stats for an 82 game season 15-35-50

Filppula, 28 years old

a) Has he reached his prime? Yes

b) Predict the economics of his next contract Hard to predict until we get a new CBA but I said when Jordan Staal signed his new deal that Filpulla's agent would be rubbing his hands with glee. So I'll say 6 years $30M

c) Would you offer him the above contract Yes

d) Should he play on Datsyuk's wing, Zetterberg's wing or center his own line? Play him with Zetterberg, possibly at Center. Hank needs someone to do all his skating for him these days.

e) Predict his stats for an 82 game season 15-45-60

Howard, 28 years old

a) Is he a top 10, top 15 or top 20 goaltender? Top 10

b) Will his play suffer from the loss of Lidstrom to retirement? His play? No. His stats? Yes

c) Predict the economics of his next contract 5 years $22M

d) Would you offer him the above contract Yes

a) Is he a #1, #2 or #3 defensemen on a cup contender? I think Kronwall has the potential to be a #1. Right now I would say he's a very good #2, but I need to see how he does with his biggest role yet to deem him a true #1 d-man.

b) Will he play better or worse with more overall ice time? He had been gradually getting more ice time while Lidstrom was getting older, so Kronwall should adapt just fine to maybe 25+ minutes per game.

c) Is he worth his current contract (4.75 mil cap hit, 6yrs)? Yes, for sure. I would even call it a steal.

d) Predict his stats for an 82 game season 13 goals, 28 assists for 41 points and hopefully many Kronwalled moments.

Filppula, 28 years old
a) Has he reached his prime? I would like another season of consistent offensive production before declaring his prime, but Fil sold me a lot as a player last year.

b) Predict the economics of his next contract 5 years/21 million

c) Would you offer him the above contract Depends on his follow-up to last season. Most likely, yes.

d) Should he play on Datsyuk's wing, Zetterberg's wing or center his own line? I think Fil would do well with either, but Z to start because it worked.

e) Predict his stats for an 82 game season 19-45-64

Howard, 28 years old
a) Is he a top 10, top 15 or top 20 goaltender? Top 15 no doubt and somewhere close to being in the top 10.

b) Will his play suffer from the loss of Lidstrom to retirement? Jimmy's numbers will certainly suffer because the defense as a unit is much weaker without Nick.

c) Predict the economics of his next contract 4 years/16 million

d) Would you offer him the above contract Depends on the circumstances. The Red Wings have always spent more on defenseman instead of goalies, though you wonder how much that will change in the future. If there's an elite goalie to be had, I would have to consider that option at the time.
