Would you trade Jimmy Howard for an elite forward/defenseman?

I'm just curious and would like to see the opinions of people here if this scenario were to arise.

We know about Jimmy's contract, two year "try out" sorta deal, this is his last year of it. At any point if another team offers us the elite forward or defenseman we've been coveting so badly, yet ask for Jimmy in return, would you give him up? Knowing we have Gustavsson, who has started and did alright considering how poor Toronto was, and Mrazek, who looks a lot like he could not only start but succeed in the NHL.

I'm not a huge fan of sending away players like trading cards especially after grooming them for so long but for the right deal I may be OK. I'm interested to see what others think.

Yes. Trade him.

He is not the goalie of the future.

Depends what we'd get in return but I'd say not for another couple years.. I think we should groom mrazek for another year or two then give him some nhl starts and see how he does before concidering trading away jimmy. It's been a while since we've had solid goaltender depth and I'd hate to see us trade it away so soon..

Guest fat guy in a maltby jersey

for an "elite" defenseman that was young and either under contract or able to be signed long-term? absolutely, without hesitation.

not a hard decision considering the team's current lineup.

Not the right time. Only when, and if, Mrazek is poised to become the starter. Which he is not right now.

That's partially the point of the question. By then, Jimmy's value may be too low to fetch the same elite player we would've gotten previously. I think this attitude is smart but it can also bite you in the ass. We can wait for Mrazek to become a sure thing and miss out because in this league you have to anticipate and sometimes it doesn't pan out. I think the GM job of a hockey team is tougher than we realize.

Honestly, normally my answer to trading away a legit NHL starting netminder would be no... With that said, I think Mrazek is going to be an absolute star in the NHL, so although I wouldn't propose such a trade, I wouldn't be opposed to it either as long as it was under the understanding that Mrazek was being brought up...

Mrazek's probably even better already so for the right guy who fits our needs. Like a youngish, right shooting power forward (who can snipe) like Perry, Horton or Chris Stewart or a youngish bona fide top pairing right shooting defenseman who is physical like Weber or Subban.

Iginla or Morrow should be on the list of players the Wings should watch to sign as UFAs after the season or to make a deadline deal for (not involving Howard unless there is a package involved)`

Didn't we have people saying pretty much the same thing about Howard?

While I'll be the 1st to admit that I don't follow the AHL, or our prospects - I'm not finding much about this Petr Mrazek kid.

He's got a lot of potential; he played superlative hockey at the 2012 World Juniors, and he's done well in GR so far. But he's yet to prove anything, as is generally the case with prospects who haven't played much in the big leagues.

On paper yeah, he's been talked up like a lot of prospects before. What separates him though is when you watch him, you see an absolute beast. It can be tough to tell the difference between someone who looks great because his teams are great, and someone who is just truly great. Mrazek if I had to bet hasn't rode the talent of his teams from all I've seen. I've watched him at the juniors, in the wjc, the AHL, and man does he ever look awesome. He looks more like one of those goalies who is pure skill and will need something to stop him from dominating, rather than the guys who are so-so and need something to help them dominate. And I'm as critical as they come. If I can judge one thing it's goalies and Mrazek makes me giddy.

Take it for what its worth but.. He's had slightly better numbers this year than Howard did on the griffins last time I checked..

No. The Wings have a couple of hyped Goaltender prospects that turned into duds (McCollum, Pearce). I only see Mrazek as anything worthwhile, and he belongs at #3 on the depth chart. He won't even see action until next season at the earliest. There isn't much past that. The Wings will have to address this at the draft, again.

You can't trade Howie because they're already too thin at Goaltender as it is.

I don't know where people get the impression that Pearce was a hyped prospect. He was undrafted coming out of Notre Dame & signed a contract with the Wings as a long shot. Was really just a depth signing for GR & Toledo.

I've kept an eye on how Mrazek has been doing this year in Grand Rapids. He had an amazing start, but has been a bit hit and miss since than. I think he's a year or two away from being ready for the NHL. That being said Jimmy has been great for us when it doesn't matter so much and lousy in the playoffs. I would give him one more chance to redeem himself in the postseason. If he fails again, then I would consider trading him. I don't know if we could get a top notch player for him straight up, I think it might cost us more than just him to make the deal work.

Only Detroit fans think Howard is worth anything. His only value to me is that he is a workhorse/gamer. That speaks a lot more for a goalie than a skater.
