Wings give Mike Knuble a tryout

Odds are highly stacked against Knuble to make the team, but it's cool the Red Wings are giving him a shot.

I think if we wanted basically a powerplay specialist, could have just brought Homer back. There's a glut at forward and besides maybe Emmerton, there's no one I would want Knuble to take a spot ahead.

I think it all depends on how serious Helms injury ends up being. If Helm ends up re-aggravating his injury and misses time it bumps Abby up to 3rd line center. I'd much rather have Knuble as 4th line center then Emmerton, but if Helms 100% by the end of training camp its a moot point.

Well, considering this is a shortened season maybe Holland and Babcock want a more steady and solid 4th line and power play specialist than the young guys. If he makes this team, it must mean that Eaves is definitely out for the season and this could be the writing on the wall for Emmy or Mursak.

Everyone here (well most everyone) complains that Abby is a winger and plays better there, well now you would have Abby - Knuble - Tootoo as a 4th line. It looks much better than Emmerton at center...

Filppula - Datsyuk - Brunner

Sammy - Zetterberg - Franzine

Cleary - Helm - Bertuzzi

Abby - Knuble - Tootoo

(Miller/Mursak)

I just look at it as Babcock and Co. don't have enough confidence in Emmerton and with this season when every game counts, they want the best chance to win. I happen to think Abby plays better on wing and getting Knuble over Emmerton is an upgrade at center...40 or not, he is more reliable and more solid than Emmerton. I happen to like the line of those three as well.

....give Lapointe a call?

typical.

Dude, Knuble played last year, Lapointe has played since 2008. This is a sprint to the playoffs and to the Stanley Cup. You are not hindering the developement of Tartar if you keep him in GR for this season. Emmerton has been given tons of opportunity, he is no better than a 13th forward on this team, ESPECIALLY with the talent they have in GR. Knuble is a right handed shot that will give them good and solid veteren play on the 4th line and the powerplay unit.

That being said, if he signs a two-way and spends his season mostly in GR, I wouldn't be surprised, he did afterall, grow up in the GR area (East Kentwood High School Grad) and probably would like earning a nice paycheck while playing at home...

Abby is a natural winger and plays better in that role, furthermore, Knuble has a career 50+ percent faceoff record, something, as a team, we were horrible at last year... as evidence by the amount of time Emmerton got on the ice last year, Babs prefers a natural center at that role and if my choices are Knuble or Emmerton, I'll take Knuble every time...

Did I mention he's a right hand shot?

I wouldn't want to see him just given a spot, but on a 2-way contract, why not...

Abdelkader is fine at center(2nd best face-off % on team) give him better line-mates then Holmstrom and he'll do fine in that role, it's hard to look good as a 4th line center when there isn't continuity with linemates. Miller-Abdelkader-Tootoo sounds a lot better to me than Miller-Emmerton-Tootoo.

I wouldn't mind a two way deal for Knuble, a little more experience in the bottom 6, good defensively, good guy with the kids in Grand Rapids. Insurance for injuries, and players not playing up to potential. I find very little negatives with this news.

I wouldn't want Knuble playing over Miller. Drew is extremely valuable to the penalty kill (even more with Eaves out) and has shown the ability to chip in offensively.

I don't think anyone would argue Miller > Knuble if we're talking player vs. player straight up...

As I said too, I wouldn't want him just given a spot, but I wouldn't mind him getting a 2-way and getting a chance to earn a roster spot over Emmerton... Especially come playoff/injury time...
