Trading up in the draft...?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

I was just thinking, would you trade up in the draft to acquire a high enough pick to land a legit #1 defenseman? We haven't had to before, but to me that isn't a good enough reason to not do it if the scenario warrants it. Adapt or guarantee your well will run dry one day regardless of how often there was water in the past. I was wondering if we notice a glaring need for a #1 defenseman, would you do trade with someone for as high as the #2 pick to grab a stud defenseman? I know this conversation has been had on Wings forums for years but I think now might finally be the time to actually think about it, since in the past it was more of a want, and now it might be a need.

i wouldnt trade our 1st draft pick for anybody .. bouwmeester, yandle .. no one at this point who knows we can get a top 10 pick the standings are so tight

and i hope we make the playoffs but if there was one year not to make it , it be this year since the draft is so strong if we would get bettman to fix the draft for us like he did for pittsburgh and we can land seth jones wed get our #1 d man for the next 20 years + it doesnt feel like a real season since its so short so wouldnt be as bad

either way i wouldnt trade our 1st round pick id try getting another by trading filppula and hopefully a 2nd or 3rd pick while were at it through ian white

it would have to be a really huge prospect to be worth it. defenseman at 18 is very much work in the making and before he matures and rounds up to become top-4 guy it'll take a couple of years.(see: Kronwall, Smith, Kindl).

and I'm not sure Wings are that bad in D as they are in the offence now. what is killing this team is lack of pure, creative talent up front. guy(s) who can singlehandedly produce scoring chances. Brunner is a great pickup but we need more than that...

This is why, if we were to trade up I would hope it is for Drouin or Barkov at 4. However I don't see the point in this draft to trade up. We will pick anywhere from 7-18 most likely, and Nishkinan, Domi, and Mantha will most likely still be available.

A #1 d-man will never come through trade. This team builds from within.Be patient and wait for Backman, Sproul, Ouellet, ect.

No way. I think we're far more likely to trade our draft picks for an already established NHL defenseman. Even a #1 or #2 pick doesn't guarantee NHL readiness, and the need is now, not in a year or two.

Did you change your mind so quick?

We need a top Dman now, but we're not gonna get one through trade and we gotta be patient and wait for Sproul, Ouellet and Backman to develop. I agree with all of that, but we can't have both. I wouldn't hate it if the Wings missed out this year and got a chance to get a high pick like Jonathan Drouin and then get a pick in around 15 and get Ryan Pulock. I would be more than happy just to get Pulock to add to our already really good D depth, but then we have our current issue at hand and that is we have trouble scoring goals and our offense is a complete disaster. G and D are ok, and will only get better with our prospects, but our forwards are lacking a bit and needs to be addressed more in this years draft.

I think Seth Jones is going to be the best #1 overall pick since Crosby and ovechkin in the mid 2000s. He just always seems so composed on the ice. His style is a little bit like lidstrom except he hits more. (Not calling him the next lidstrom, just saying he plays like him).

I would love to see Holland trade up, even if it means losing a good player like filppula in a package deal.

Probably won't happen though...

This is incredibly unlikely. Holland doesnt do almost anything that requires risk. I am equally mad at people constantly bashing him and at Holland for playing it safe while Lidstrom was in his last year, our team was obviously aging, etc.

Holland and co have done a great job establishing our current farm system, the best one that ive seen in the 18 years ive been follwing them. That has taken some patience and NOT making moves that we may otherwise have made. That said, some things he/they do are incredibly frustrating. Last years pick would have been the highest pick we've had in the last 20 years other than the Kindl debacle and we traded it for a joke, and a bad one at that. We needed a defenseman, knowing that Lidstrom and Stuart were leaving, so I get that. But Quincey? Classic Holland..former Wing, "known commodity". I would have rather had Downie in that deal than Quincey. Also, Its almost like we put all our eggs in the Suter basket last year. Instead of being proactive, we seemingly thought that was in the bag until It wasnt. I cant help but thinking that In the last two years we couldnt have used the Quincey pick plus a prospect to make something happen. It looks like we left a gap between the old guard and the kids. We should have been bridging the gap two years ago.

Holland has become so predictable. He always likes the team, no matter how obviously flawed they are. The draft is trading our first for 2 second rounders (which is ok sometimes) and if we do keep our first it seems like its.always a "safe" pick. A guy that at worst should pan out as a 3rd pair/3rd line player but may not have the upside as 10 other guys on the board. Thats ok so long as your elite players arent approaching thier late 30s...and ours are. We need potential "elite" replacements and if you arent going to step up and be aggresive to draft them, you better start making trades. We are risking losing the distinctive mystique of Red Wingdom...something that allows us to sign free agents, which allows us to be a litte safer in drafting and trading. If we lose that, I see the house of cards falling.

I think we were all pissed - including Babs when holland didn't pony up the assets to land brent burns a couple years back. That - to me - was a no brainer deal that he truly missed on. A couple years ago Bogosian was somewhat rumoured to be available when he was playing very poorly and Holland dismissed that idea too (i think rumoured price was Ericsson+Hudler+2nd) - now look at the guy.

I'm almost hoping Holland retires soon so that we can have a little more unpredictability. I think that RIGHT NOW would be the time to mix it up as we are heading to a new division and conference and we have a new set of trading partners to deal with. There isn't enough on the line for players who don't perform. At worst you see a guy like White benched rather than traded. There is no accountability left in our organization to drive players forward to work harder. Almost all of our recent free agent signings have been players hoping to end their career in Detroit with respect (Modano, Bert, Sammy, even Knuble tried to get in on it).

If Flip wants $5mil per than I'd be all for using him as trade bait, but unfortunately it would likely be for a higher pick as he'd be a possible rental for a team that is challenging for the Cup. Like Anaheim, who would pair him with his buddy Selanne.

Bogo was on the block in Atlanta as a 7th Dman and then he got tons of ice time in Winnipeg and became a top 4 guy. Holland truly dropped the ball not looking into getting him. He's going nowhere now. With Buff, Enstrom, Bogo and in the near future Trouba coming up, that top 4 is gonna be something to be reckoned with.
