The same old weak argument. Whenever something negative (injury, bad play) happens with older Wings it's because of their age. How do you explain Helm and Kindl's injuries? Groin injuries always happen during training camps. The camp was probably even more intensive than usual as they had to do it all in one week.

ah luckily for sammy they were doing 1T drills from all angles on both sides which meant there was no goalie to shoot into. he was on his off-hand so he would have to set the puck on the blade before releasing but he was crisping em top cheese all day with the occasional bar down. zetty pulled a perfect 1T bardown. the crowd loved it haha.

Yes and no (IMHO). "No" because we're not that old. "Yes" because everyone whose opinion matters seems to want this to be A Young Team. All these sound bites about hunger, and battling through this ridiculous schedule, and seizing opportunity, and surprising people despite a lack of experience, and trying to take a "blue-collar" approach - it all screams young-inexperienced-team-that-wants-to-overachieve. So where does an older guy fit into that? Well, I guess to retract what I said a little, I think that our older players actually fit that mold pretty well - as opposed to being, like, old and super-soft sniper specialists (e.g. Brett Hull), we have a nice collection of very hard-nosed, physically capable "blue-collar" types in Bertuzzi, Cleary, Samuelsson, et al. Even Zetterberg - he's like an ultra-class third-liner. Even Datsyuk has shown a salty side.

 

Speaking of Datsyuk, though, he might actually be the "old guy" I'm most worried about. He, probably more than any of other "old Wing," is Skill, Skill, Skill (with some extra stuff thrown in - though less so every season, I assume, as he is in fact a near-ancient 34 years of age). How will his game hold up re: his body. How will it work in the context of this new-look, new-feel, "new-age" roster? I think that's where we may ultimately find Brunner's immediate worth, i.e. in, yes, his production, but, perhaps even more importantly, in how he helps to bridge old and new, super-skill-dependent-aesthetic-of-yesterday and young-and-dirty-workingman-ethos-of-today.

 

Lordy, I dunno if any of that'll make any sense. I'm exhausted and my brain feels like mush.

I feel like this could actually be a good chance for Mursak to show whether or not he's got a spot on this team, or at the very least, show that he's a capable NHL player so someone else can put him to use.

That's awful. I wonder if he got the mono too because of his age.

Bertuzzi was bitter of the lockout saying how it would be difficult for an older player to come back if a season was lost. Season wasn't completely lost but now he has mono. Then there's the added strain of the law suit this spring. I wonder if this is his last season.

I could be wrong, and I hope I am, but if he has enlargement of his spleen, wouldn't he have to sit out for 12-18 months until his spleen returns to normal? I couldn't imagine any doctors clearing anyone to play any contact sport, especially at the NHL level, with an enlarged spleen.
