Yeah I definitely see him going for more in a couple years, Montreal could have saved themselves some cash by signing him long term.

True - however Subban was looking for big $$$ for 5 plus years.

Habs GM Bergevin was in a tough spot; do you sign Subban for long term (mind you the guy only has 2 years of experience in the NHL), or as the GM you take advantage of the fact that Subban has no arbitration rights, and work out a short term deal to see how he developes?

IMHO - this deal is for the better for both sides.

Edit: or Carey Price for that matter, 6.5mil/year for him... Imagine how much Howie could fetch in Montreal lol

Good for Pernell Karl. If all goes well, a much-larger payday awaits him. He seems to be a classy individual (with this as just one of many examples), well-liked by both fans and the relentless media in Montreal.

Glad we didn't sign him. He's good offensively, but, he's not worth 5-6 million dollars long term, nor the picks/prospects needed to bring him here. The Wings need a shutdown guy to be paired with Kronner, because Kronwall is pretty good at moving the puck, but there is no real shut down guy in the top 8 d-men in the system.
