VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted January 30, 2013 I agree that we don't need another puck-moving defenseman. The media people are just stuck in the "Replace Lidstrom" mind set. Kronwall, Quincey, Smith, and White can all move the puck. Ericsson can, too, but he usually moves it right into the opposing team's sticks. What we severely lack is a defensive specialist as good as Stuart was. I mean, hey, if you can sign a top offensive D-man, then great, it will help, but the real problem here is our defense is a defensive liability. That's why people are so impressed with Huskins. He doesn't do anything other than make sure things don't get out of control. If you can bottle that up with some higher level playing talent, that's the guy the team needs for starters. EDIT: And as for the NTC, well, it's up the player. A No-Trade Clause just protects the player from being moved without his approval. It just complicates matters because the player could want to stay or cause trouble and demand certain ideal circumstances that severely limit the teams he could go to. dirtydangles 1,328 Report post Posted January 30, 2013 These guys are over the hill. I want to see the wings go for a younger player that is under-appreciated or excess. number9 3,297 Report post Posted January 30, 2013 If Ladi Smid makes it UFA I think he should be target #1. He is a physical, shot blocking, minute logging guy who can play against the opposition's top lines, and he's only 26 to boot. Agreed, I just can't see Edmonton not locking him up though
ogreslayer 1,069 Report post Posted January 30, 2013 Agreed, I just can't see Edmonton not locking him up though Never know. Right now, the Oilers are looking at having 6 forwards & 5 d-men as either UF or RFAs at the end of the season plus Nugent-Hopkins is an RFA the year after & due a raise. Sure they're projected to have a little over $20m in cap space next year but I don't see them spending it given they're $16m under this year's cap.
Guest The Axe Report post Posted January 31, 2013 Purposely doesn't include Smith No!! Total accident. Hes my favourite on D. I just forgot. Krons-Rig Smith-White Quincey-Kindl
lacrossekid2 5 Report post Posted January 31, 2013 Well do we go after a top Defenseman or make a run this offseason at one of the big forwards, be it Perry, Getzlaf, Lupul, Roy, Horton or perhaps a sneaky quiet solid guy like Weiss. Plus you've got Ouellet, Almqvist and Marchenko that'll be up with the big club within a year or two, do we really need to blow a ton of money on a FA

Motown4013 350 Report post Posted January 31, 2013 Huskins has been steady as a surgeons hands so far. Perhaps he didnt fit in with the system in other teams that he has played on but thus far, he has been better than what White, Q and Kindl. There are lots of players who look downright average in the AHL or for another NHL team but flourish in the right system. look at Howards numbers in GR...Patrick Sharp? Brooks Laich? The downside is that he is slow, so pair him with Smith who is speedy an offensively minded. He has earned a spot i think

I've not once yelled at my TV for a play Huskins has made I don't think, at the same time it's been awhile since I hated Quincey. He hasn't been completely terrible lately either 1 Motown4013 reacted to this
Jedi 1,865 Report post Posted January 31, 2013 Huskins has been solid so far, no doubt. Which is what most of the scouting reports we saw at the time of the signings said he would be. Time may tell a different story, of course, but not one complaint yet about him. I'd like to see if our current D can actually get their stuff together before saying we need to make a move. It would be nice to add a #2 D man to this roster, but it would have to be at the right cost. Might be best to see who is available at the deadline, or who is available as a free agent (or possibly an offseason trade).

puckbags 863 Report post Posted January 31, 2013 The issue is we have 7 guys on 1 way contracts and Smith who is 2 way but isn't going back to the minors because a. he shouldn't and b. won't clear waivers. We are going to either lose a guy on waivers or Kenny has to make a trade. Huskins for Chara, Lucic and Seguin..oh and we will throw in a bag of used pucks. Seems fair

We are going to either lose a guy on waivers or Kenny has to make a trade. Whether a contract is "one way" or "two way" has no bearing on a player's waiver eligibility. That only determines the salary that player is paid, depending on where he's playing. Best explanation of that (and the entire Waiver Eligibility process) I've found for that is here... Do 1-Way and 2-Way contracts effect Waivers? Simply put, no they do not. This is a common misconception. 1-way and 2-way contracts have nothing to do with waivers. They are for salary purposes between the AHL and NHL. The confusion is understandable, most players with 2-way contracts are waiver exempt because of the reasons above. Most players on 1-way contracts aren’t waiver exempt. Just keep in mind that the chart above is the only thing that determines a players waiver status. For what it's worth, Lashoff is on a two way contract too, but it doesn't matter since his salary is only $523k this year (he'd make $50k if he's playing in GR). I believe that Lash is waiver exempt, too. 2 derblaueClaus and puckbags reacted to this

Jesusberg 1,256 Report post Posted January 31, 2013 (edited) Owned lol..I'm more confused then ever..so which of our d would have to clear waivers to get sent down? Essentially, it comes down to the age and experience of a player. Look at the information under "Exempt Due to Experience" for an explanation on it. Pretty sure the only two guys on the team who don't have to clear waivers are Smith and Lashoff. http://www.pensionplanpuppets.com/2009/11/26/1174855/waivers-101-a-guide-to-the-nhl Edited January 31, 2013 by Jesusberg
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted January 31, 2013 Basically, in most cases 2-way contracts coincide with being waiver-exempt. But it's a coincidence and doesn't mean a 2-way contract IS waiver exempt all the time.

GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted February 2, 2013 Why would they get rid of Ericsson? He has been the team's best d-man this season. I don't think he's a top pairing d-man ideally, but he has done nothing to warrant angst like Quincey.
