Do We Really Need a New Stadium?

The Olympia. Build it around the FF, Comerica area. Old time look to mimick The Olympia, Nickname "The New Red Barn". Amenities to take it into the next century. Bring the statues from the Joe and other significant items. Honor the past history while being new and state of the art.

I will admit a soft spot for The Old Red Barn since I watched the Wings there from 67' to 78'.

It's going to be called LIttle Casears Arena.

I wouldn't count on it. Corporate names exist to help alleviate the cost of building a new arena. Using your own corporation kind of defeats the purpose, because you're still paying with your own money.

Building a stadium on the water front was stupid (as was the ren cen and more). Smart cities, cities that people enjoy and are vibrant have public spaces on their water front. Chicago is a perfect example. Say what you want about their hockey team and fans, but the entire lake front is a park and it is awesome. Yes, San Fran has a stadium on the water, but they have tons more space on the bay and places people want to go, such as tourists visiting Fisheman's Wharf.

Tear the POS down, put another stadium in town, and build something on the river that people can use and enjoy year round. Hey, I got it, like another casino! There is some Detroit thinking for you.

stay at the Joe, its the best!

The best what? Really, it's time for the Joe to go. Its a building. Not even a nice one either. There Joe isn't up to current code on things like the steps and handicapped accessibility. Its another reason why I gave up my season tickets. Watching the Wings live is great, but the hassle of parking, waiting in line to get into the arena, the inability to freely walk the concourse, the bathroom situation. Just nothing good about the JLA. I saw a comment about last night's game and the number of empty seats going into overtime and how it meant that the Wings had a poor fanbase. Most of those people were probably stuck in line for the restroom or stuck in the crowd of people in the concourse. It makes the Wings look bad.

Not sure who mentioned the free agent situation earlier, but there was a poll amongst NHL players during the lockout and the poor facilities in Detroit was listed as a main reason not to play here. Lack of a vibrant downtown was also listed and the fact that the players scattered all over the suburbs and don't live in a centrally located area.

Like it's been mentioned a couple times, a new arena wouldn't be completed and usable until somewhere around 2018-2020. The Joe is outdated and not refurbish-friendly (no one wants to drive up to Auburn Hills to watch a regular season game). The longer the wait to start on the build, the longer the team is stuck at JLA, which doesn't sound terrible today, but 5 years down the road, our patience to wait another 5-10 years will be wearing very thin.

I can just imagine the crowd downtown around Comerica and a new arena on a night with a Tigers game and a Wings playoff game. It would make the whole experience a lot better. People could come downtown just to hang out for a wings game, something that doesn't happen for games now.

I like the proposed spot...I think it is like around Clifford, Park Ave and Elizabeth streets just down the way from Comerica. Olympia Enterainment HQ is right there on Woodward along with Hockeytown Café and the Fillmore (of course Chelly's.) That area is the most vibrant and it makes perfect sense to build behind all of that and that will just bring that area to life!

The square of Adams, Cass, The Fisher FWY and Woodward will come alive! You have Bookies (which may have to be relocated) along with Centaur, The GAR Building (currently under remodel! :yowza:) and just think of the other things that will pop up in that area! No longer will it be vacant lots used for parking and other things....

besides, I want these two buildings restored on Elizabeth St. between Woodward and Park Ave....

(some of you may recognize the one on the left as Ghetto Recorders...a studio that has recorded artists such as the White Stripes)

The building on the right was called Faltis Poultry Market in the 1920's, directly next to it is the back of the Fillmore (fmr: State Theatre)
