Babcock

Sorry everyone, had to make a new thread

I believe Babcock has been terrible this year. I think injuries and the roster is hiding the fact that this team is undisciplined, no structure and often un prepared. You never know what your gonna get with the wings. The powerplay and penalty kill is a joke and an embarrassment for the last 3 years. Whose fault is that? Every year it seems we get a new assistant coach but have the same problems so what does that mean?

So the real question... Fire him or not?

It obviously means it's not a coaching issue, think about it, every year we get different coaches, and every year our pp/pk are bad... ergo it's a player issue more then a coaching issue

Not sure I agree it's not on the coaches. I would possibly agree that the PP/PK could be on the players, but I wouldn't set it in stone. As for what seems to be a lack of organization, that's on Babcock.

You try losing the most man-games of any team in the NHL, included amongst your injured players three top-six forwards, a PP QB, and the team's best PKer, and then see how easy things go for you.

A lot goes on behind the scenes that we don't appreciate I'm sure but the way Tatar has played and him not getting the ice time he deserves is really bothering me. Not to say Cleary and Abdelkader played poorly but a young offensive guy shining could really use the boost in confidence for his development all while helping his team. Datsyuk shouldn't be grinding out the game he should be trying to score goals. The way he played against Nashville he single handedly carried that line. Tatar played one shift and was demoted. For what?

I can't blame Babs at all right now. Limited number of "healthy" players to work with. However it's all about winning in professional sports no excuses in the NHL either.

It's always easy to blame the coach but in reality it always comes down to the players.

Opinion of course.

I won't agree it always comes down to JUST the players. The players are on the ice, they have to perform. The way that the lines have been thrown together and the changes come down to Babcock. Tater should not be on the 3rd line still, just as Abdelkader should not be on the 2nd line with Datsyuk. Datsyuk has enough of a task trying to drag Cleary along all the time.

I've been saying it for years - players feel too comfortable playing for Detroit. There is nothing Babcock can do about it. They are simply not prepared and this is the reason for all those injuries. It is all on Holland. What is more frustrating is that dropping useless guys like Miller, Mursak, Samuelsson and injecting someone like Nyquist, Ferraro, Shaehan into the line-up will not produce any effect as our "stars" (e.g. Franzen, Kronwall, Zetterberg) will still be playing with no pressure on them. Send one of them packing and trade to Winnipeg for peanuts and we all will see a bit different effort from the rest of them.

id like an interviewer to ask babs why he still plays cleary. the only answer better be because of injuries

babs your line combos suck how do you play cleary or abs with datsyuk over tatar?

your pp line combos suck.

brunner cant play point yet, he doesnt have the patience and i havent seen him take a shot from point range anyway, he needs to play where stamkos plays on the PP

abs did a pretty good job infront of the goalie last night battled hard.

It is Babcock's decision to play Cleary in the top 6 over Tatar. I'm kinda torn on this one whether or not he should be fired. The way this team is being run this year though is really pissing me off. Nyquist better be up when this season is lost. The 2nd line should be Gus-Dats-Tatar. As much as I hate to say it, it may be time for some house cleaning after this year and let Babcock and Holland walk, but I may be wrong. I'd love to see a team that can hold a 2 goal lead like we used to.

Coaches in any sport have a shelf life. Has Babcock reached his? Ruff is a good coach but after that many years the players got tired of the same message so he got the boot(new owners probly had a lot to so with but not all of it). Babcock is one of the top 3 coaches in the nhl and with how the wings ice the same team year after year the message that he is sending might be falling on deaf ears. Injuries and retirements are a big reason why we are currently on a skid and out of the playoffs but we are far enough into the season that the team should be way more organized, disciplined, and better on special teams. I think babs is the best coach for this team and I hope he stays for a while longer but if the team gets healthy and everything else stays the same it might be time for him to go.

Another fire Babcock thread.... Who would we replace him with? He's aruguably the best coach in the league who has new assistant coaches, just lost 2 top 4 Defensemen (1 being one of the best of all time), Just lost one of the best powerplay specialists in the game, and who is constantly losing regular roster players to injury. How can you blame him with the revolving door of players he has to work with? We are losing alot of games due to mistakes made on the ice... the guy can't go on the ice and stop them from making stupid decisions. There are many factors to the roller coaster ride we are in for and it has nothing to do with Babcock. If we fire Babcock then we might as well get rid of Dats and Z for not scoring everygame, and we might as well fire Howard for not stopping every puck. Hell let's fire Illitch while we are at it for letting all of this happen to a team he owns. The team has some major needs that need to be addressed that Babcock as a coach cannot fill.

Babcock is far from the issue with this team. Don't call for his head until this team has played at least five games together without at least 3 people hurt.

Right, what can Bab's really do?

Also I don't see anything wrong with missing the playoffs this year for a better 1st round pick in the draft. Long term it'll be better for the team to add young talent instead of trying to sign over priced UFA's.

A Gus-Dats-Tatar line is way to small, those guys would get pushed around like crazy!

This is a young team, young players make mistakes.

Yeah but why put cleary and abby on the first like when you could of called in Nyquist to play with dats..Obviously cleary and abby are not getting things done so why put them on the first line hoping that dats can give them a spark. Why do you think dats goes off on his own and tries to carry the team on his back.

And what the f...Tootoo goes off in the third into a phrase i hate to use(beast mode) on a shift and it seems like after that babs said "SLOW DOWN THERE LITTLE GUY" and he never played another shift. I know im probably wrong about him not playing another shift after that but it did look like he was pulled in and told not to be playing like that. It just seems like babs and the coaching staff can;t handle this much adversity. But I do agree we can;t say much yet until we can get all of our players back. Because we did all see how just getting a player like Helm back can do to the team.

The injury thing shouldn't matter. Is our team THAT bad we think Bertuzzi, Mikael frickin Samuelsson, Carlo frickin Colaiacovo will help when they come back? Give me a break...

Franzen & Helm will help for sure, maybe Smith.

But your top guys are healthy (for the most part, dats one game and fil is hurting)

Face it people, when our offseason consists of replacing great players with journeyman it spells trouble.

There is absolutely NO reason Cleary and Abby should even be on this team let alone in the top 6 with arguably the best player in the NHL.

TLDR: our team isn't good.

Its not Babs fault he is stuck with the hand that has been dealt him. I have stated this before that it my opinion this is the worst defense that we have had since the 70s and there is no hope in site there is no one coming up that will help out. We have not one defenseman that I would say belongs on the top 2 pairings I hate to be a downer that is usually not me but our D sucks

Bert has been a staple in the offense of this team for the past couple years. Not having him and franzen as big (even if they aren't bruising) bodies takes some of the focus off dats and z. Sammy will help out pp as someone who is poised and will shoot. Carlo is a solid puck mover. Not having a consistent mover outside the top pairing is killing this team and forcing them to play a muh more static breakout instead of their typical stretch tape to tape passes from the d to the forwards for the fluid breakout we are used to watching. The injuries are paramount to this teams play because it has forced the wings to play a less creative game looking muh more like a dump and chase team. Which they are clearly not built to be.

Right, cause dats gets pushed around oh so much. Tatar has proved so far he can play in the nhl aginst the grind lines and not be pushed around, so to me that is a non issue

A nice thing about this organization is that the coach will not be scapegoated.

Another nice thing is that our prospects are overripe in the minors, while crappier players take up their roster spots in the main lineup.

Don't know if that's on Babcock or Holland, but some accountability has to go somewhere.

That's pretty much what i'm seeing from them too. and with how much Cleary and Abs are bringing to the table, why not load up an offensive line. that's what the top 6 or in some cases top 9 is for. offensive threats. your 4th line is your energy line, and 3rd can be a skilled grind line. we have a top line, a grind line and 2 energy lines. time to mix it up and get some actual proper line combos to bulge some twine.

And he shouldn't be..if anything I think he's done a pretty good job with this ever revolving door of player, injuries and line combos. Hard to build any chemistry. Head above water..get healthy..make a run.

1) As I say every time the "fire Babcock" cry it taken up, you need to name a better coach, who is available, to replace him first.

2) Can we not at least wait till we have something resembling a healthy roster before we throw him under the bus? After all he's done for us, don't you think we owe him that?

3) If Babcock is fired, half the coaches in the NHL will be nervously looking over their shoulders at their GMs. There would be an absolute stampede for his services.

I just look at other coaches like Tippett who have never had a really talented roster but the team is well structured and he gets the most of them. There's no reason why the wings should be constantly un prepared and come out totally flat. Or when they win the first period and the other team makes an adjustment and the wings have no answer for it. You can predict a wings loss when they're up 2-0 just how the game is going cause you know they aren't going to get it together
