Ryan O'Reilly signs offer sheet with Calgary, Avs match

Rate this topic

On Avs matching O'Reilly offer, one industry source believes it's a given they'll trade him a year from now.

This seems like a huge gamble for Colorado... What if he doesn't produce over the next year? No team will want to trade for him if he isn't producing, knowing that in order to retain his rights they have to give him a $6.5mil offer. If that ends up being the case, they would've been better off trading his rights earlier this season or taking the draft picks from Calgary.

Either way, O'Reilly wins. He'll face two possibilities after next season:

1. Guaranteed to make $6.5mil a season

2. Become a 23Y/O UFA

Really no surprise that the Avs matched it. Avs didn't want to let him go for nothing, so I could see him being traded next year.

While I'm not surprised, and my first thought was that they would match, a 1st and a 3rd (especially what should be mid-round or higher in a suposedly deep draft) is hardly "nothing". I wouldn't be at all surprised if they have to settle for less if and when they do trade him. That QO number is going to drive his value down, and he's already proven to be difficult. Any sophomore slump and they'll be lucky to get a 2nd.

Apparently O'Reilly would have had to pass through waivers before joining the Flames.

So this was basically the dumbest move ever by a GM.

Which one? LOL.

"This was a goal of ours from the outset, to get Ryan signed, and that goal was completed today," Avalanche general manager Greg Sherman said. "With the support, I can tell you, of our ownership – not only today but throughout this process – we have come to terms with Ryan O'Reilly and now we move forward as a hockey club.

"Given the time frame that we moved on this, I think it's pretty clear what our objective was. We moved very quickly and efficiently to go ahead and make the decision to match the offer. We're happy to have him under contract."

"[The goal to sign O'Reilly] never changed," Sherman said. "Sometimes that process takes a little longer than you would expect or would want, but ultimately today he's staying with the Colorado Avalanche. It was our goal from Day One. To get Ryan back in an Avalanche uniform and get him back on the ice as soon as possible, we're certainly pleased to have that be the case.

If your goal is to ultimately sign him... and you're willing to pay him $5+ (which is what O'Reilly wanted) because you think he's worth it... Then WHY NOT PAY HIM THAT??

No, let's be shrewd and have another team sign him to an offer sheet that can handcuff us further than the $5 million/per. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

I don't care what the perception is around the league or in the dressing room about how quickly the Avs matched that sheet. It's so obvious that O'Reilly had Sherman by the balls the entire time and HEY! would you look at that?!

He got what he wanted and more.

Feaster and O'Reilly are both in a sinking life-raft when it comes to job security.

Had Colorado NOT matched the offer sheet Calgary would have paid a 1st round pick, a 3rd round pick, and THEN O'Reilly would have cleared waivers due to playing 2 games in the KHL in January. Basically Calgary may have paid a 1st and a 3rd for someone else to get him, which would have been hilarious!

there is no re-entry waivers anymore, they got rid of that in this latest cba

He would have in the old CBA, but the rules were modified in the new CBA so only UFA's have to clear waivers not RFA's

Edit - I guess the writer who wrote this was wrong, Bill Daly confirmed that indeed O'Reilly would have had to clear waivers meaning he'd probably be a Blue Jacket.

Here's the story on it. And yes Bill Daly is the one that stated he'd have to clear waivers.

EDIT: Euro_twins you are correct in saying the CBA fixed that but only for a team's own RFA's playing in Europe. He can now go directly into Colorado's lineup.

interesting... so they always leave loopholes on purpose, or....?

Colorado matching was the best-case scenario for the Flames, and it's still worse than not making the offer at all as they've now given a division rival one of their best players back. And people here complain about Kenny...

I think it's just for this seasons case. A lot of player were already playing in Europe due to the lockout so maybe that's why they made it for clubs owning the RFA's rights? My guess anyways.

Yeah, that was the same argument against signing Weber to an offer sheet - the difference is that Weber was going to sign somewhere whether he was "prodded" to or not. Calgary's offer sheet only had two reasonable outcomes, one of them neutral/marginally bad (Colorado matches and O'Reilly is back with them earlier than he would have been otherwise), one of them horribly bad (Calgary surrenders a 1st and a 3rd for a player they would certainly lose on waivers).

“Prior to tendering the offer sheet for Ryan O’Reilly we, as a hockey operations department, examined whether there were any impediments to our successfully securing the services of the player including, but not limited to, his having played in the KHL after the start of the current NHL season.

Our interpretation of the Article 13 transition rules governing restricted free agents (“RFA”), and the applicability of Article 13.23 under the new Collective Bargaining Agreement to such RFA’s was, and continues to be, different than the NHL’s current interpretation as articulated to us this morning. Moreover, throughout our discussions, the player’s representative shared our interpretation and position with respect to the non-applicability of Article 13.23.

While we were prepared to advance our position with the NHL, in light of Colorado’s having matched the offer sheet it is now an academic point. As such, we will have no further comment on the matter, the player, or the offer sheet process.”

Nice analysis. Tend to agree that it could have been an even bigger mess with appeals and whatnot.

Mike Johnson at 1:37-2:33 sums up the blunder very nicely.

Would be surprised if Feaster keeps his job.

I'm very much interested in seeing who else made an offer sheet to O'Reilly.

Not that that info. will ever be made public.

2 stupid clubs.
The Flames would have had to give up a first (probably a top 5 pick) and a 3rd.

O'Reilly isn't worth that kind of money. Last year was the only year, he has ever shown potential to produce. Even in jr. he has never managed a point per game in any season.
