O'Reilly signed to CGY offer sheet

Well, the Ryan O'Reilly saga is almost over. He'll either be in Colorado or Calgary for the next two years. Offer sheet reads 2 years and 10 mil. But, it's the distribution of the salary that's scary. Next year, on this deal, O'Reilly is due 6.5 mil. That's a huge cap hit for someone still so unproven.

Calgary continues to resist a full rebuild and they might just be wasting O'Reilly's talent on a team languishing in mediocrity. In Colorado, at least O'Reilly has a chance to make it with a young team. It all depends on if Colorado matches. If you ask me, the relationship is very strained between the two but Colorado needs to match this offer sheet. They can't afford to lose O'Reilly this way. Sure, they'd get some draft picks from the Flames, but if O'Reilly turns out to be the star he's projected to be, the Avs need him in a Colorado sweater when he does. Greg Sherman needs to show that he's the bigger man, put all the pouting and BS behind him, and get this player signed and on the ice. This is ridiculous.

So, what does this mean for us? Well, it means there's one less option available (even if it wasn't very viable to begin with) for a scoring forward to help stabilize the 5-on-5 offense and improve the power-play. Honestly, I'm just glad it's all over and I don't have to hear how dumb Ken Holland is for not mortgaging his future and handcuffing himself to a guy who, honestly, is very raw and unproven. A guy who had 18 goals last year should NOT be making 6.5 mil in a season. Damien Brunner is making less than a third of that and has scored more than half of that output in a condensed half-season.

Would I have given O'Reilly a try for a realistic price? Absolutely. But, we need those draft picks to get more talent on the farm. And trading for O'Reilly? No thanks. The price was reportedly astronomical.

I think Feaster is extremely on the hotseat in Calgary and he is getting extremely desperate right now. The Flames are looking more and more like the Leafs from some time ago, trade away picks for shortterm fixes and refuse to do a full rebuild.

O Reilly is a great player but he is not worth 6.5 m next year and people called me crazy for wanting to offer-sheet (if he makes that far) Pietrangelo with a 7 year 56 m deal. The Avalanche can look at this from two perspectives hockey or money:

Hockey you absolutely have to match, their team basically is Statsny, Landeskog, Duchene and O Reilly sure they are young and unproven but the Avalanche don't match, it will send a clear message to their upcoming UFAs that this franchise isn't about winning it is more about money for the owners and you can bet as competitive as these guys are, they won't like that. So wheter they match or not I am glad Holland didn't try an offersheet, because from a Wings perspective this team is looking at their own rebuild very soon and trading away draft picks (except for elite players) doesn't help it just hurts and prolongs your rebuild.

Calgary fans deserve better than Feaster, seriously.

Colorado matched the offer sheet last night. Avs will have to wait one calendar year from yesterday to be able to trade O'Reilly. He's still four years away from UFA-eligible, so Colorado probably wants to avoid that. Many speculate they'll dump him around this time next year. They say that the relationship is too damaged.

I give Feaster props for trying, but this means he's still not going to let Kipper and Iggy go at the deadline. He's still trying to force this team to win. Calgary's going to have to fire him if they want a rebuild. Feaster won't hear of it.

Good for Colorado to finally get O'Reilly back in the fold. They're going to have to live with his salary next year until they can trade him, but at least they can enjoy him until then. I don't think he's going to improve enough to earn 6.5 mil next year. That's going to take a while, and it looks like it'll be with another team.

I think for Feaster sake, Colorado matching the offer was a God send. They would've thrown him in as their #1 center, and if O'Reilly pulled a Dustin Penner, Feaster would get an absolute roasting. Atleast if they have to go the rebuild route, Feaster will be the one to atleast get the wheels turning on it.

It'll be interesting to see what Colorado does after next season. In order to make O'Reilly an RFA again the qualifying offer has to $6.5mil or higher!

You ain't kididng. I read somewhere (I'll try and find the article/link again) that the Rangers had inquired about O'Reilly and Sherman had asked for pieces (He wanted two players if I remember correctly) that Sather hadn't even been willing to give up for Rick Nash. That's how high the asking price was. Forget that.

Apparently, there's more to this. O'Reilly played with Metallurg of the KHL for two games after the season started. Per the new CBA, for Calgary to get him in the lineup this season if Colorado didn't match, he would've had to clear waivers. So, basically, they would've surely lost him to waivers or not have the option of getting him on the ice at all. Feaster didn't bother to read the CBA. Colorado bailed Calgary out of a disaster. Not to mention they would've lost their first and third-round picks as compensation to Colorado. It explains why no one tendered an offer sheet. Feaster's idiocy never ceases to amaze.

Additionally, there were four other teams that made an offer sheet to O'Reilly that he didn't sign.

Stated by Geno Reda on That's Hockey.

Wondering who those teams are...

Four GM's that either A) don't know the CBA or B) are so egotistical and desperate to make big moves that they don't care. My guess is Sather from the Rangers, Holmgren from the Flyers, Nonis (would've made more sense if Burke was still in charge) from the Leafs, and Tallon from Florida.

My guess is

1. Florida

2. Islanders (Garth Snow is kinda dumb)

3. Rangers

4. Flyers
