WWard out 6-8 weeks, might the canes have interest in McCollum?

There isn't a team in the league that would be willing to trade for McCollum.

He was atrocious in his only NHL game, he was terrible in the AHL and he was just as bad in the ECHL.

On top of that he's a FA at the end of the season. We could have moved Joey MacDonald to them and they'd probably pay a hefty fee for Mrazek but not for McCollum.

Florida is another team desperate for Goalies after losing Theodore for the rest of the season but even they probably aren't THAT desperate

beg to disagree here. McCollum is not terrible. he has been very good at GR. yes Mrazek has been better, but it is pretty close. 2.34 GAA for mrazek and 2.83 for McCollum. He is also only 23, which is very young for a goalie. Howards best year in GR was 2.54. Just as a reference. Howard also didn't stay with the RW untill he was 25/26. So 2 years older than McCollum is currently. he is an asset that can be moved.

the difference between a 2.35 and a 2.83 goals against average isn't insignificant. It amounts to a 20 goal difference if they were to split the season evenly.

Here are McCollum's #'s at the AHL level vs Howard and Mrazek.

Games Started -

McCollum - 98 (most in a season was 28)

Howard - 173 (most in a season was 51)

Mrazek - 28

Wins

McCollum - 40 (41%)

Howard - 90 (52%)

Mrazek - 18 (64%)

GAA

McCollum - 3.28

Howard - 2.66

Mrazek - 2.34

SV%

McCollum - .877

Howard - .911

Mrazek - ,915

SO

McCollum - 3

Howard - 14

Mrazek - 1

I know I'm exaggerating just how bad he is, but I don't think we could even get a 7th round pick for him considering his play and the length of time left on his contract. There are tons of options out there better than McCollum as far as goalie depth is concerned.

You're missing the point. Carolina's looking for a goalie who can log NHL starts and get NHL wins. McCollum is NOT that goalie. Carolina wouldn't give us half a bag of chips for him. McCollum's AHL stats are meaningless when you consider Carolina's need. To be of any value to the Hurricanes, he would have to prove he can hold down a backup job consistently and provide good starts when needed. He hasn't proved that at the NHL level at all. The Canes are a playoff team. They aren't looking for more AHL guys.

McCollum is horrifically inconsistent and has a habit of letting in terrible goals. Mrazek is superior in every way, and he's not yet fully ready for the NHL. Barring a very substantial improvement, McCollum will never be an NHL regular. He will certainly not garner any interest from an NHL team, as he has no practical NHL value at this juncture.

McCollum actually has some value to the Red Wings. If Howard/Gustavsson get hurt, McCollum can ride the pine in the NHL so that Mrazek can keep playing for the Griffins.

I doubt Carolina would pay a 7th for McCollum. The Wings would probably have to GIVE Carolina a 7th to take McCollum.
