Red Wings close to re-signing Howard

Howard is 28 yrs old, in his prime and already we have someone talking about replacing him down the road.. unbelievable.

Mrazek has years away to be considered a starting goaltender. Gust will have one more here then let go and should be (although wish we could send him down now). Mrazek and McCollum will have a chance to audition for the backup role.

And where do you all get the idea there just doing this in anticipation of Mrazek coming up and running away with the job? Howard is a excellent goalie who's given this team a chance to win (in a lot of cases won by himself) every night. And, he's got a great attitude, but you all can keep sitting there in your chairs because you've got that superior hockey IQ, and write Mrazek in in about 2-3 years.

Get over it, Howard is this teams franchise goalie.

Howard is in his prime, yes, and is a legit #1 goalie and top 5-7 in the league. sign him until he's 34-35....yes please.

Mrazek is a couple years away likely. If he turns out to be a showstopper in a year or 2, we have a nasty G tandem, which we haven't had in....? Someone fill this blank_________ Or we have an option to move one for other needed assets, like a top 6 goal scorer.

McCollum couldn't prove himself useful in the AHL. His audition has come and gone.

We had Hasek/Osgood in '06-'07 and '07-'08, won the Jennings trophy in the latter. Pretty good tandem in my book.

If you're looking for 2 big names, we can go back to '03-'04, when we had Hasek and CuJo. That turned out to be a political nightmare in the locker room, but they're two undeniably great goalies.

I still think McCollum is young and needs more development before we shut the door on him. Remember he's 23 and in two years we will see where he is at in growth at in development.

I think north of 5 is a bit much for Flip based on his production, but at the same time worry about the team without him. I think he's undervalued on these boards.

I'm good with Howard though, aside from a few games thought he's been real good this season. And last season before he got injured? Awesome.

I agree Wings need to lock him up. I'm not a big Howard fan but he has been solid this year, I was really starting to hate him for a while there, just looked like he was letting in easy goals, then Babs called him out and has been solid. As far as Fil I don't mind him, but hes only good if he has Dats or Z to center his line.

It doesn't clog the lines because Monster isn't going to be playing here forever. Monster can be let go after his contract and Mrazek would be ready to start backing up Howard full-time. Run that tandem for awhile, giving each other rest and fighting for the job and then allow Mrazek to take over the starting job down the road.

Mrazek won't be backing up Howard until he gets 2-3 more years of AHL experience. The only way he joins the Wings sooner is if he wins the Calder Cup or takes the Griffins deep in the playoffs this year and Monster retires this year. Monster will be backing up the Wings next year which puts Mrazek in a Wings uniform and backing the team up in the 2014-2015 season.

I still think McCollum is young and needs more development before we shut the door on him. Remember he's 23 and in two years we will see where he is at in growth at in development.

I think this is McCollum's last shot of AHL eligibility. I may be wrong, but if the Wings don't sign him this year he can sign elsewhere if he can get a contract. If the Wings do sign him, he won't be playing in the NHL. His numbers are not solid.

We spoke of this in the other (Howard is average) thread. I presented his stats and the pay ranges. The rumored talk of 4-5 million fall into the range of earned by performance pay one would expect.

As for the future, no GM woth his weight in salt, is shortening the length of term of a proven top tier NHL netminder because of the potential of a 1st year pro prospect. The "worst case" scenario is you end up with a proven NHL #1 and a protege #2, see Vancouver. Even in this scenario Howard won't have the anchor of a contract Luongo carries. Even then Mrazek would need to be locked up and he may choose to hit the open market.

One in the net is worth 2 in the bush leagues. so you fans who believe Mrazek to be the next "Dominator" remember he backed up Belfour for two seasons. Even when moved to the Sabres he was a back-up. I can't remember the one guy's name but he was behind Fuhr until he got hurt. goalies take time and the results are unpredictable. Detroit has found a solid #1.

I wonder what a goalie must do, slay a dragon(?) to win the hearts of some Wing fans?

2007-2008.

no. we had two pretty decent goalies in the regular season (ozzie and hasek both past their primes), with a super team in front of him, then he got real bad in the playoffs and ozzie took over and got hot at the right time.

They were both excellent in that season.

They have to sign him...they're stuck with a starting goalie who will never be the type of goalie who lift a now second rate team to any higher...he's like Kindl ... they gambled and lost...

Yep, because it's entire his fault when the team repeatedly gives up scoring chances in the center slot.
