Larry Murphy Fired by FSD

Totally blindsided by this. I'm with the rest of you wondering if something else went down, otherwise you don't fire your guy midway through the season because of ratings. I like that a decent portion of our broadcast team is ex-wings, keeping it all in the family is what this organization does. That being said, whoever mentioned bringing in D Mac or Joey...

YES PLEASE. Especially if Mac's personal issues are as under control as they seem to be these days, I would love to see his goofy face between the benches.

Ok - I gotta ask...

Others here alluded to Murph's possible alcohol consumption while at work for FSD...Is there any proof, or is it all speculation?

The reason why I ask is that I myself never really noticed him under the influence while broadcasting, or "UIB"...Then again I'm usually having a few drinks myself while watching the game

As far as I know it is all unfounded speculation.

Murph stumbled on his words a lot and people seemed to take that as drunkeness when really I think he just wasn't very good as a broadcaster.

I've heard no substantiated incidents about his drinking. It just became a running joke because of his constantly mangling words. But the reality is, being an on air broadcaster isn't easy. Think of how most hockey players sound in interviews.

The mid-season firing is unusual but until I hear otherwise I'm giving Murph the benefit of the doubt.

No, not Darren McCarty! I can't stand him. His voice is gone from all the drinking and partying and he says nothing of value. They tried him on 97.1 a few times and it was absolutely dreadful to listen to. He was equally bad on Versus/NBCN. It would seem that there has to be more to the story. I also think that unless there is solid evidence that he has a drinking problem, it's a bit unfair to discuss. He may sound drunk and silly, but that doesn't necessarily mean he is.

I haven't read the whole thread but I would really like to know what the side story is here. He was well liked, a bit of a goof ball and a mumble mouth sometimes but I personally liked him. Blaming the ratings seems like a cop out.

Whatever it is, rating sure isn't the reason unless they replace him with a girl in a bikini or something.

But otherwise it's a pretty obvious excuse for something else. Murph would hardly factor in ratings being down, particularly coming off yet another lockout.

If alcohol were involved it seems like without some awful on-air incident, they would just let his contract run out this season rather than fire him mid year, in order to avoid any potential legal complications from letting someone with alcoholism go. Because it's a long time Red Wing, I also would think they would've handled something like that much more discretely.

I get the feeling that Murphy's alcohol habits were involved. There have been times when he has been clearly watered during broadcasts.

This is a pretty big accusation, would hate to get that rumor started and drag Murphs name through the mud, if it's unfounded. That being said, would definitely be a reason for a firing.

Will they replace Murph with some serious eye candy?

Murph WAS serious eye candy.

I wouldn't mind Mac doing it. In fact, I'd love to hear what he says about some of the fighting nowadays.

Homer would be funny, but I just wonder how much he'd have to be "bleeped", and you can't do that without the dreaded delay.

Still, Murph was Murph. Just your typical, average buddy who comes over to tip back a few and watch a game and makes comments on it, except that he isn't in your house and he's a Cup champ and he's getting paid to do it, and he's cooler than anyone you actually hang around with.

Someone being a good player doesn't necessarily translate to being an effective on-air personality. It's far more difficult than it looks. Listening to Lidstrom speak is about as exciting as watching paint dry. Osgood seems to have a good sense of humor, but doesn't seem to have the conversational or story telling ability that's necessary. Same with Kocur. Draper is the only one mentioned who I think might have the personality and the camera presence to pull it off.

I always thought Shanny would have been a great commentator, but he sold his soul to the devil...

I can't stand listening to those videotaped explanations he gives when a player gets punished. There's no way not to make it sound stupid.
