Larry Murphy Fired by FSD

Don't..... for..get the awk....ward....

pauses.

For some reason this made me wonder what this might look like. Imagine, if you will, the rap battle to end all rap battles. A three way duel to the death between William Shatner, Giorgio Tsoukalos (the guy on Ancient Aliens with hair like a Centauri from Babylon 5), and our own Larry "whoo, the fries" Murphy.

Apologies for that frightening vision in advance.

Have you been watching the same Keating I have? John Keating right? He of the over-extended metaphor in every intro/interview?

Yeah, your right. I'm not saying he is perfect... though I always got the sense he was reading those awkward over-extended lines off of a teleprompter and thinking to himself (what the F did these guys write?) Nevertheless, he comes off as much more coherent and professional when compared to Murph.

Can we keep the talk about Murphy's alleged alcoholism to a minimum? I know it doesn't really violate any forum rules, and it's just an honest discussion, but we have no indication whatsoever that he has a drinking problem. For all we know he's a teetotaler. I'd hate to see LGW become known as the forum that dragged Larry Murphy's name through the mud for no reason whatsoever.

I feel like the speculation started out innocently enough, but it's picked up some steam and it's suddenly become no longer speculation.

I see where your coming from. I would 100% agree if it was just some thing out of left field but there is pretty solid evidence its not. I interact with people with substance abuse issues on a daily basis. Its pretty easy to tell there were times where Murph was not sober while on the job. Its not speculation. When you know what your looking at its fact.

Oh and on the Keating thing. He really needs to go. I was able to convert my girl from a Rangers fan to a die hard Wings fan over the last two seasons. John Keating almost derailed the whole thing as pregames and intermissions with him would make her want to go do something else.

It's still not fact.

It's speculation. Informed opinion at best. Still not fact.

Not to contradict you, but there are some things that can be mistaken for substance abuse, such as certain types of mental illness, side effects of a legitimately taken drug, or even some allergic reactions can cause the slurred speech etc.

I'm not saying this applies to Murph- just a general observation. I'm keeping an open mind about Murph.

In a related note, for clarity's sake:

When I mentioned Murph getting tipsy in my post way, way back in this thread, I didn't mean it as a condemnation of him or a suspicion that he had abuse issues. I just have heard that he could tip them back and hold his own quite well, and is known for his love of beer. More of a manly-man thing. Nothing more. No ill intent or accusation was meant.

you have realize that all you redmond/murphy lovers are super homer fans. I mean you all frequent red wings message boards. I honestly could care less about their stupid 'back in my day' stories, the rediculous homerisms. The lack of objectivism, both LOVE fighting, the hatred of all penalties that meant to protect players (even when 10% of the NHL is injured). It'd be nice to have someone on the telecast with an opposite opinion, a little bit of devils advocate.

I never disliked either of them, but they are both not great broadcasters. FSD probably thought it would be better to keep one rambling former player, and then try to get someone more professional, someone with opposing opinions. Clearly redmond is the better of two.

I watch a lot of tsn, sportsnet and CBC. And all those telecasts blow what FSD throws out there.

Mickey and Larry are colour guys. That's what they do. They add some colour to the show.

If that means stories, then it's stories. If it means background, then it's background.

I love the stories. I'd rather watch a game with my uncle who used to play than a guy who just watches a lot and knows the rules. That's what Mickey and Larry bring to the table: It's like watching a game with a friend.

I also watch a lot of TSN, Sportsnet and CBC and I don't think the gap between them and Detroits crew is that large.

They are all guilty of some of the very things you're complaining about regarding Redmond.

When Pierre McGuire is on TSN he spends half the game prattling on about the Junior program that every player on either team came from, he often celebrates physical play (labeling those players his Monsters) and many of their on air personalities openly complain about the #'s of penalties called.

CBC's crews are blatantly homers unless they are calling a game involving 2 Canadian teams. They will applaud the odd good play of a visiting team or highlight a player, but will still openly complain about any calls going against the Canadian team. They also employ a large # of former players who are constantly arguing over one another making it impossible to get any information of value out of the broadcast. As far as their love of physical play and hatred of penalties, they continue to employ Don Freaking Cherry.

Sportsnet though is far worse than anything you'll ever see on any Fox Sports Broadcast. The last Oilers game I watched their crew spent half the game talking about their sons Midget games, right down to showing a team photo and giving shout outs to many of the team members and their families.

Honestly I don't know how you can level those kind of accusations and Ken Daniels and Mickey Redmond and then hold up a broadcast that features Joe Bowen as an example to follow.

not to mention, they are red wings commentators, not nbc, or cbc, or sportsnet, they are red wings commentators. So when I am complaining about a penalty, it's nice to hear our bcommentators complain too, not say, well it is the refs discretion

Wow the person that posted and said the TSN, CBC, and Sportsnet are so much better than FSD. That guy has to be on something, or is just like most Canadians and think their version of the game is so superior to everyone elses - apparently broadcasts included. The ironic thing in reality is that neither are true, as your post supports. CBC is EXTREMELY biased towards ANY Canadian team playing. I too watch a lot of CBC/TSN/and some Sportsnet broadcasts. CBC focuses so much on the Canadian slant that it becomes very hard to watch and take seriously. Sportsnet is the broadcast equivalent to Bush-league hockey, and TSN is probably the lesser of evils.

I'm Canadian, and I find this message offensive towards true Canadians... you know the ones that sit in their garage drinking and not caring what game they are watching or who is commentating, as long as it's hockey

My friends and I know somebody who works for FSN. Whenever we see this guy, he is always telling stuff about what goes on inside there. Anyway, we saw him recently and we asked him about the Murhpy thing. Basically he said nobody there knows why he got fired, and that everybody there was pretty mad about. Not groundbreaking info, but I think it kind of supports what a lot people are saying on how this might be personal or something. Anyway, thought I'd share the info.

I think it's way past time to start complaining to the top brass at FSD. Tell them whoever fired Murph is an idiot, and we're really angry about it, and want this idiot's head on a platter.

Just make sure they're playing the right way.

As for Murphy, I honestly thought he got much better over time, with a few hiccups in between. Maybe NHL Network? Oddly enough I think this season was his best for analysis done right.
