Holland has a nice golf-friendly routine worked out for himself:

Trade deadline day: We kicked the tires, didn't see a fit, we'll save the money for free agency
Free agency day: We kicked the tires, didn't see a fit, we'll save the cap room for the trade deadline

Although to be fair, Holland will sometimes throw in a "the asking price was too high" just to mix it up.

Line 1: Thank you for calling Little Caesar's Pizza, how can I help you?

Line 2: This is Ken Holland, how much for a large Pizza?

Line 1: $10

Line 2: Too rich for my blood, goodbye.

The following day in the Free Press, "Well I worked the phones but nothing made sense".

If he really believes that, then he needs to go. Jim Nill time.

@TSNBobMcKenzie: If Jokinen plays 25 per cent of PIT 2013 playoff games AND PIT goes to Cup final, CAR gets 7th round pick from PIT. #tradecentre

Holy s***, what does Carolina get otherwise? Pink eye?

These conditions, man. Shero is just doing stuff because he's bored, I think.

@TSNBobMcKenzie: If Jokinen plays 50 per cent of PIT 2013 playoff games AND PIT wins the CUP, CAR gets a 6th round pick from PIT. #tradecentre

Ya meanwhile none of them can stay healthy. Sammy is hurt either before his first game coming back, or 10 minutes in. Worst signing ever!!!

So sad, yet so so true. On the plus side things could be worse. We could be watching our GM throw away our best players for other teams spare parts and unwanted prospects like Calgary.

Helene St. James has been told that the Wings aren't doing anything, nothing in the works at all.

That's really sad to hear. Considering the state of the team, and guys eating up cap space and not earning their contracts such as Franzen, Bertuzzi, Samuelsson and Cleary... I'd have been selling all three of those guys right about now, for picks, players/prospects, bags of pucks, it woudlnt matter. They aren't contributing this year (I know Bert is hurt), teams would like to have them for playoff runs, so why not deal them. Get something that can help next year, or later this year. These' guys IMO arent contributing, so moving them out of here won't really hurt us.

Who is going to take on Bertuzzi's contract when he might not even be able to play it out?

This should be repeated a million more times. Really. There may be a few new readers on this board who haven't read this a million times. Totally. Thoughtful.

Yep. For some reason this deadline was more frustrating than usual for me. This team isn't near Cup worthy. This is four years since our last meaningful run at the Cup and Holland wasted Lidstrom's last years. Now he's wasting Datsyuk's too. How could you even blame Pavel now if he left? Pavel would be completely legit to say that he doesn't want to stay here if were not going to try to win.

I'm tired of the same old excuses now...we are always waiting for the perfect Free agent discount or the perfect trade (unless its for Kyle Quincey)...

If Datsyuk leaves and this has anything to do with it...I could seriously see myself essentially stopping caring. I am surprised Illitch has told Holland he HAS to do something. That is unless Illitch is just more focused on the Tiger's now. At least Dave Dombrowski is trying to win now. Seriously, the point of all this is, if you know your not good enough to contend...why not sell your spare parts, at least? This team is just not good enough...I don't get it.

I tend to agree with what Holland is saying. There are no top 6 forwards or top 4 dmen out there, so what's the point? Adding another aging 3rd or 4th liner isn't what this team needs. With the reduction in the salary cap next year and the buyouts that can take place this summer, I'd rather stand pat than make some desperate move that guarantees us nothing. So what will everyone be saying if Pitt doesn't win the Cup? Or Boston? Or Chicago? Or Vancouver? They're all favorites, but only one team is going to take it, and it's possible none of them will.

I, for one, am glad Kenny wouldn't accept getting ripped off and paying double what something is worth.

Me too but its been 5 years now and we are/already have been wasting the last years of Lidstrom and Datsyuk. When Kenny gets around to not being afraid to gamble while he still can it may be too late. Edited by achildr1

Vanek, Pominville, Yandle, and Gaborik are all available. But you're not going to get a sniff of any of them if you start by saying "I'm not going to trade any top prospects or my first round pick".

You know what's crazy, when you add a "dynamic" player to your team it tends to change the team's...dynamic. Strange I know, but doesn't anyone else feel like even a lateral move might be worthwhile here considering our current core doesn't seem capable of getting anything done?

What he says to the media, does not mean that's what he says to other teams. And Holland's actually came out and specifically said if he's making a move it's for a top 6 forward or top 4 defenseman. And you don't go after those guys if you aren't trading firsts and top prospects.
