Holland retirement watch?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Just thinking out loud for a minute here, haven't heard or read anything.

Holland joked for many years that once Nick retired, he was going to do so. His close friend and long time Assistant GM Nill is the choosen succesor. keeping those 2 things in mind and today, it isn't to much of a stretch to beleive Holland may be retiring as GM this year.

The last thing Holland would want to do to his friend is set him up to fail. Moving pieces and not having it work, would fall on Nill's head not Holland's. Other than a couple of UFA's that could leave/should leave, what else will chnage between now and summer time? Nothing. This way Holland can walk away with the team in an ok place. Full set of draft picks, not to many big decisions to be made, cap space to spend money on, and a team still capable of going to the playoffs.

Now the team is in a decent place for the next GM to come in and do things his way.

Again, just my thought. But it would explain things if true.

I woulnd't be upset... This isn't a knee jerk reaction. I think this organization needs a bit of a shake-up at some point. We also need a shift in outlook in my opinion.

One of the things that happen to many organizations over time is, they get very top heavy. Every company that goes into reorganiztion reduces the number in management. Some streamlining could be very much in order. Commitees to make decisions never work. Go look at congress........LOL

He would be a good fit in Calgary after they fire Feaster.

I wonder, though, how different Nill and Holland are. They've been working together for a long time. Seems like it's the same person with similar ideas on what the team should be.

Well I would imagine that Holland has the last word. If Nill was always second guessing everything Holland proposed he probably wouldn't be around anymore so I imagine he has his own ideas but hasn't had his chance to run the show.

You mean, there's a chance that Nill loves enforcers and thinks Cleary and Samuelsson are lucky to be playing in the NHL?

:sadlike:

Yeah who knows. Mayhew was Millen's assistant before taking over and the Lions made the playoffs within a few years and he seems to be pretty active, especially this offseason.

I will say this: If Holland decides keep Sammy, Cola/White around for another season I will be calling for his retirement. These panic signings have to be cut out with amnesty buyouts. If they are on next year's starting roster ahead of a few kids I think Holland will have gone mental.

He's only 57, which isn't very old for a front office guy.

I think this is wishful thinking on the OP's part.

He'll likely finish out this contract (runs through 2015, then get promoted to Develanno's job who will be in his mid 70's then) Nill will take over and the status Quo will continue.

Personally I think Nill is so good with our drafting that I wouldn't want to move him out of that position and I personally don't think there is anything wrong with the job Holland has done. I'd be ok with them staying in their current positions indefinitely.

Also I see Holland refuse to pay a little extra to buy a player's UFA rights ahead of free agency. This is a great tactic to show a player you want him and get the first crack at signing them.

I won't complain about Holland's policy against offer sheets for RFAs as I guess that is the reasonable thing to do, but sometimes a GM has got to be a dick to meet team needs.

If Nill wasn't already so a big part of the management team, I might dismiss this thought in 2 seconds instead of instantly. But even if this was happening this off-season, Nill would just have a stronger voice in what was happening now, in which case, well, it is what it is? Or something?

Jimmy D embarrassed the Wings organization last fall with his farm animals comments, and got fined for it as well. It wouldn't be a big stretch of the imagination to see him retiring, Holland moving up, and Nill as GM. I guess that leaves Lids to come scoop up his Assistant GM position.

What comment was that?

What comment was that?

He said the owners were ranch owners and players and employees like himself were the cattle, and without the ranch owners they'd be out of work.

Conveniently when the comment was printed by most media outlets or read out on TV they left off the tidbit where he refers to himself as cattle and edited it so it looks like he was only referring to the players.

I doubt Ownership felt embarrassed by it at all, in fact I think every owner out there was probably nodding in agreement. Illitch probably even paid the fine for him.

So pathetic, why would he retire because he didn't want to over pay all these over hyped players that aren't even going help us win the cup. Reality check people, everyone knows even if we had traded there's not a player that's going to get this team to the stanley cup. Holland is just realistic and you guys must face the it too that this team is in rebuilding. Keeping draft pick and our prospects is more beneficial to us as then having players like Jagr & Iginla on the roster.

I'm so happy that Holland didn't overpay anyone or that he didn't do any trade at all. Truth be told there's not one player that was on the trade block or could of been traded for which is worth it this year.

You guys think this is back in the days when there's no salary cap we can trade our picks and prospects and get some talent as fast and as easy as it was before. Think again, the game's changed and the salary cap makes decision tougher, the only way to stay competitive over year and year is to keep building up with the draft and keeping your core intact. If you go spend money on FA's and ship off your prospect, you will be dead last for the rest of your life.

This is wrong. Well kinda. Are we rebuilding? if so, then why hang onto guys that are going to be gone soon? Example A. White. UFA after this year. Not coming back. No room for him to be honest. Move him for an extra pick. More prospects. Example B, Colavacio-see Example A. Example C Cleary. example D Miller. Example E franzen. Example F Filppula. Example G Sammy. All could have been moved thus freeing up cap room and gathering more picks to rebuild faster.

Oh you mean you wanted some players? McBain would have ben nice. 25 year old RH shooting Dman. Would have fit in perfectly with Smith, Kindl, lashoff, and dekeyser. Courturier is another. 20 year old future #1 C, something we don't have.

Now I could go on and on about that, and many have. but that wasn't the point of this thread. fact: Holland did nothing. Nothing good nor bad. Nothing to gear up for one last run, and speed up the rebuilding process. The question is why? Does he really believe we will be better by doing nothing? if so, then what do we need him around for? I guess we have all the layers we will ever need. trueth is, no team in any sport is EVER a finished product. You are always changing and trying to improve. We didn't. So again, I ask why? There is only 1 explaination that makes sense. he is done.

All this whining about Holland standing pat and not selling the future, unbelievable. If I were Holland I'd have taken the easy road out last summer (- retiring with Lidas and moving up as president of hockey operations in the organization) and left my successor trying to fix a behind the pack team, going out as a GM legend! One at least has to love his will to fix it and leave (hopefully Stevie, Shero or Chiarelli) with a great roster to build from.

Develano has pissed away his chance to ever GM the Detroit Red Wings, with his stupid and insanely offending comments. This organization from top to bottom is and always was about being classy and you can't tell me Mr. I was happy with this comment. You try your best to threat players well and then someone of your own organization is throwing the players under the bus like nothing? Doesn't fly with me.

So of course people can critisize Holland all they want, but at least admire his will to fix things.
