Concerned - we might not make it in to the playoffs

Management never was going to do "enough". They spent all the time they could've spent making deals telling us about how they weren't going to. We're in a rebuild. Whether it's by our own choice or by it being forced on us with management's bad decisions/lack of decisions is the real question.

I don't see us making the playoffs. Too many teams who improved too much around us. Some were already better. We aren't catching L.A. and will probably be passed by younger, better, faster, hotter teams. It's time to look forward.

And to be honest...I wouldn't mind if we did miss them. I don't see us winning more than a round anyway, although we have the experiance to maybe win two rounds. I would almost rather not make the playoffs and get a real good pick than make it and get bounced immediatly.

I still think the Wings will make it to the playoffs. I want Chicago. I know we're 0-3 against them but I think if Helm comes back and we can be reasonably healthy, we could knock them off.

I don't know how you see that. I see them sweeping us...and I despise the Hawks. That said, sometimes teams are upset because the other team just simply hates them. And I pretty sure the Wings veryuch dislike the Hawks.

Ok Leters alleviate some of your fears. Out of the 12 games we have left 8 of them are against inferior opponents. 3 against teams that are 1 point or tied with and 1 with Chicago. I'm going to say they will go 9-3 down the stretch here. Especially if 43 suits up for them after he pushes the back the next couple of days.

The Sharks, Kings, Blues, Oilers, and Blue Jackets all have worse schedules. The Oilers have 10 games against opponents that are better or even with them. The Blues still have to play Chicago 3 times. The rest will play each other twice each down the stretch while the Wings only play San Jose St. Louis and LA once and they are all at home.

So by all means be a fan and worry about your team, but realize they have bathe best shot out if the remaining contenders for the final spots and could even move into 5th if everything falls correctly by going 9-3 down the final stretch. It's starts tonight against the desert dogs. GO WINGS!!!

I can't wait to get him back but 43 is going to be rusty.

Can anyone really count on Helm at this point? He's played maybe 2 games in over a year. Is there any news on his injury? Last I heard he was seeing another specialist.

I think this is a valid concern, especially if you go forward beyond this year.

Look at the teams around Detroit - virtually all of them got better or will get better. Columbus is already better (just look at the season results) and they play the exact style which beats Detroit every time.

But look at the East - Washington/NYI/NYR/Philly/Carolina are all teams Detroit will have to contend with next year - all the while playing a similar or tougher schedule given the new division they will be in. It's really too bad this franchise/fanbase is too proud to get the needed rebuild process started now, because eventually Boston/Pittsburgh/Montreal are all going to run into cap issues and age problems, but Detroit won't be ready to take the reins in the East.

Yuck! I could not disagree more with the bolded mentality above. It's the same thinking of so many Lions fans who hope for a better pick in the draft by losing the last X games of the season. Who's to say the pick will work out? Who's to say the team wouldn't draft a good/great/star player with a lower pick? Good God, play to win every night.

Regarding the Wings specifically, keep the playoff streak alive. I remember the last year the Wings failed to make the playoffs. The team endured a 7-game losing streak that season. I never want to return to those days. More teams make the playoffs than not in the NHL. Missing the playoffs is an indication of massive failure.

I guess I'm a little concerned about not making the playoffs but I'm still pretty confident we will make them. It will definetly come down to the wire and will be fun to watch but if we can at least keep pace we should make it in. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, we'll see what happens.

We don't have a #1 defensemen and 2 more legitimate top 6 guys (only Flip, Franzen, Datsyuk and Zetterberg are); so the team is currently not capable of winning the cup. I wouldn't be too upset if we missed the playoffs and management would finally stick their heads out of their asses.

I swear you people are so scared of not making the playoffs, we will, and then i'm gonna send out a big I told you so. As far as winning the cup though, that's not happening this year. Have faith Wings fans and grow a pair, geeze. We really have been spoiled for the last 20 years.

^THIS. Cups are the only thing that matters. The team doesn't have enough to win a cup unless some guys wake up and have career games from here on out. As much as I hate to say it, I wouldn't mind having a better pick right now.

Get in the playoffs and you can win.

Howard is an elite goalie, Datsyuk and Zetterberg can dominate. Franzen can get hot. and our depth players are all experienced and good defensively.

Smith/Quincey/Kindl/Lashoff etc. need to step up and play well.

It can happen, all of these things are in the realm of possibility. It's not like we need abdelkader to turn into lindros, we just need people to play to their potential, not above it.

We're the Detroit Red Wings...first round exits are pathetic, collasal failures. The thing now is, we're not even trying to win the cup. Kenny knows we aren't good and I guess we're supposed to cool with. Well im a spoiled Wings fan and i hate, i hate, first round exits. If we have to suck and accept it we might as well get a good pick instead of losing to the Hawks or something in the first round.

Guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. Fortunately, I'm confident that the Wings ownership, the players, and all the people who work at the Joe agree with me. Go Wings!

My only comment is that we tend to lose to inferior team and do well against better teams ... except for that 7-1 Chicago fiasco.

See what I mean ... Pho 3 Det 1 after 2 :unhappy:

I was thinking the same thing. If I was betting on it, I'd put money on the Wings making the playoffs, but if we miss the playoffs (other then my wallet being lighter ), I don't think it's a big deal. I wouldn't mind a mid to high draft pick to add to this young team. Plus it would mean a mid to high 2nd round pick, and we always do really well in the 2nd round.

Edit: If people want to see changes, maybe a playoff miss would bring the changes they want?

Here are the standings at 12:34 EST (5:20 left in the Wings game)

1 Chicago 58
2 Anaheim 55
3 Minnesota 44
4 Vancouver 44
5 San Jose 44
6 LA 43
7 Detroit 41
8 St Louis 40
9 Edmonton 39
10 Columbus 39
11 Nashville 38
12 Phoenix 26
13 Dallas 35

8 thru 13 are only separated by 5points. Realistically, if the Wings don’t get going here shortly, and some of these other teams do, we could potentially not see the Wings in the playoffs for the first time in a long time.

Only thing we really have going for us is that a lot of our injured guys should be back in the next week or two, let’s just hope that’s not too late :/

I meant 12:24,my bad
