Nyquist thoughts

Dude has the most potential to take over Datsyuks role in the future. In 3 years I think this kid can become a good offensive threat, in about 4 or 5 a complete player once he gets use to playing against the top players. Next year teams are going to pay attention to him so it will be a little harder.

Happy to have you on the team Nyquist.

Ray Ferraro on Vancouver's team 1040 this morning talking about Nyquist. He says unfortunately Filppula will have a market value of 5 million and Detroit will not be able to keep him. Nyquist will be his replacement.

I'm thinking maybe not as good on defense but definitely a more potent offense of threat.

Tatar replaces Nyquist on the third line. i hate to see Filppula go, but I think we can live with it.

I agree he is not at Fil's defensive ability YET, but he definitely has the potential.

That shift last night where he stole the puck from Kane TWICE was awesome!!!!

Absolutely. Look, any direct comparison to Datsyuk is going to sound ridiculous because they will NEVER be another player quite like #13. But if you watched Datsyuk play in that first rookie season (2001-02), Nyquist reminds me a lot of what I saw from Datysuk in those early years. Datsyuk had obvious creativity and puckhandling skills, but he'd string about 2 or 3 ideas together and then would either run out of ideas, run out of time, or get planted on his butt. What made Datsyuk into a world-class star was his work effort, added upper body strength, his dedication to the 2-way game, and the added experience of what he could do with the puck in the NHL. Logic tells you that a 34-year-old Datsyuk can't be as explosive as he was 10 years ago, but his game (like Larionov before him) is so cerebral that I swear there are times he's playing better hockey now than he ever has.

Before this year, Tatar was the player that I thought was most "Datsyuk"-like. Over the past month or so, I've become a huge Nyquist fan. That stick check he does is so similar to Datsyuk's, it's almost as if he taught it to him one-on-one. Time will tell if Nyquist has the additional tools to put it all together, but could you think of a better mentoring situation than playing around 13 and 40?

The idea that we have Nyquist, Tatar, and Jurco, and if two out of those three could become even 70% of what Datsyuk and Zetterberg are, this team could be in better shape than most people predicted.

The best thing for our young guys is Datsyuk. He has to NEVER return to Russia. I want him on Red Wing ice as coach for 30 more years.

I'm not really fond of comparisons between rookies and star players, but I completely agree with everyone on the comparisons to Datsyuk, which is why I wanted to make this post to pose this question: Is it just me, or does anybody else get confused sometimes on who's out on the ice when you can't see the numbers? I swear, at times Nyquist has a similar posture to Datsyuk when he has the puck until I see it's #14. Is Nyquist bowl-legged by any chance? :tounge: You can tell he's a sponge and seeing what Dats is doing, what's working and what's not. I'm excited for this kid in the future.

I agree, though it'll never happen. But I do hope Datsyuk signs for another 3 years or so, long enough to play with Nyquist and Tatar and then kids like Jarnkrok, Jurco and possibly Frk to crack the lineup and stay long enough to learn from Dats and Z and what it's like for them under Babcock. They're the most talented forwards we have right now and I want them soaking in as much information as possible from our current stars/staff.

02 was a long time ago for me I can't really remember the run too well but you don't think Nyquist has had a bigger impact for his team on this run than Datsyuk had in 02?

for sure. but the circumstances are completely different. in 2002 pavel was a rooke on a stacked hall of fame team.

this year's team is in the process of rebuilding, so nyquist has had more opportunities to make things happen. if there's one thing that stands out to me when comparing to datsyuk is that nyquist is a much faster than datsyuk was/is

IMHO - you are absolutely right about mistaking one for the other on the ice sometimes, as this exact thing has also unexpectedly happened to me several times. I have begun to think of Nyquist as "Datsyuk-Lite", in that maybe this is a peek at the beginnings of the upward trajectory of a possible future star, with the hockey charisma of a Datsyuk or Zetterberg. I think that they (Gus and Dats) both have a very similar looking skating base, and turn, cut, stop, and dangle in very similar ways at times. Maybe Dats' style is something that Gus emulates, either consciously or unconsciously.

BTW - not to take this off topic, but as a New York based Red Wings fan, I am in seventh heaven seeing the Wings go as far as where they are now, and can't help but get excited about the fact that Gus, Anderson, Brunner, Smith, and Kindl are finally gelling to give us a taste of what might be an incredibly bright future for us when the other over-ripened kids coming down the pike also join the team. Maybe Kenny was right, after all!

I love our youth. I only want to trade youth if we get legit top liners.

Wasn't everyone 2 months ago or so saying "Trade Nyquist?"

The times are uh changing.

I will go on record as someone who was always against trading Nyquist. You could search it to confirm, but Goose is awesome and I always wanted him and Tatar on the team, though for a time, I was ok with trading Tatar. Not as much anymore. Nyquist is a definite keeper.

Tatar-Andersson-Nyquist

Helm-Emmerton-Brunner

Those 3rd and 4th lines would be tough to play against after going up against:

Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Horton

Franzen-Filppula-Abdelkader

At this point I don't even want to trade them at all. They've proven they're top liners.

Lol look up proven in the dictionary please. They have not proven anything yet.

But witht hat said Nyquist looks amazing.

And yes I like our young guys we got. But if you have a chance to trade a younger unproven guy for a proven player on a team that needs some help you do it. We still lack size and our prospects don't have any either.

For a player to be proven it needs to be done for more than one season. AND if you're a proven top 6 player YOU NEED TO BE IN THE ******* TOP SIX TO PROVE IT NOTNON THE THIRD LINE. Some people these says...

Tatar-Andersson-Nyquist

Helm-Emmerton-Brunner

Those 3rd and 4th lines would be tough to play against after going up against:

Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Horton

Franzen-Filppula-Abdelkader

For once I kind of agree with you!! I mean I'd have different lines but I don't mind the players so much...

I'd swap z and franzen. And Brunner and Tatar. The way Brunner Anderson and Nyquist are playing why change it?

Brunner would be better served not on the 4th line and Andersson needs to start hitting with his 6'3 frame to be tougher to play against, but that does look good aside from that. Not sure if Horton will be available, or if he'll still be useful though. He's good, but his hustle level could be better.

I really really like this kid. He's fast, strong on the puck, does a lot of things right with his positioning. I'd love to see a line of him, Brunner and Helm next year. Ohhh the insanity. Add a good two 6 forward for scoring, make this our third line, get Dekeyser back on D, I like our chances next year.

Nyquist has flourished on the 3rd line with a strong center in Andersson and a complimentary winger in Brunner. The match-ups work for him. The chemistry is definitely there. As good as he is, I still think (at least right now) you start next season with that line intact. Tatar will be working in somewhere in the top 9 hopefully, so I don't know who you promote to the Top 6, potentially Brunner like we saw at the beginning of this season with Tatar replacing his role on the 3rd line. I see things working out like this:

Franzen-Datsyuk-Abdelkader

Brunner-Zetterberg-(UFA scorer)

Tatar-Andersson-Nyquist

Eaves-Emmerton-Miller (Tootoo)

Abdelkader will be better than he was this past season, acclimating himself to the Top 6 role. Filppula sounds like he'll get his paycheck elsewhere. Hopefully Brunner resigns for reasonable buck, same with RFAs Andersson and Nyquist. I've always thought Miller was a good fit, so I'd like him to stay, especially since Emmerton has improved and they've had plenty of good looks with Eaves forming the 4th line.

I think Nyquist could easily play Top 6 and in much the same way as Abdelkader, forcing him to adapt to that role now may be a good idea in the long run. However, if we can land another legitimate Top 6 to replace Filppula, and rotate Nyquist, Brunner, and Tatar into the second line winger slot as fortunes dictate, I would love to see that 3rd unit continue to grow together and cash in against easier match-ups.

Wanna see it like this:

Tatar, Pav, Bert

Nyquist, Hank, Brunner

Cleary, Mule, Abdelkader

Miller, Emmerton (Helm), Eaves

...but that will never happen...

What do you do when Helm returns.? Does Anderson go down to the fourth line? Helm is a very different player than Anderson. That would change the dynamic and the chemistry of that third line quite a bit.
