18 current regulars (I may have missed someone) playing in the NHL drafted by the Wings. I don't think too many teams can boast as many
If you add the undrafted free agents who signed their first NHL contacts with the Wings that they have - Brunner, Dekeyser and Lashoff, it looks like a considerably better, more balanced and younger team than the one the Wings are icing.
All this is especially impressive considering that the Wings have had the least amount of first rounders in the years that these guys were drafted and they averaged the lowest drafting position during the years that these guys were drafted.

There are 30 teams with 20 regulars on each team. So each team should (on average) contribute about 20 players that were drafted by them (plus or minus due to undrafted players and free agents). So according to your assumption the Red Wings are about average, or slightly below the league average of regulars currently playing that were drafted by said team.

Edit: Not saying that it's not impressive because as you pointed out we had the least first round picks and mostly later picks.

I think that's what is most impressive. The fact the we draft late in the first or not at all and the kind of talent we drafted in later rounds.

There are currently 84 undrafted players in the NHL http://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=undrafted%20nhl%20players&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CDIQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cbc.ca%2Fsports%2Fhockey%2Fopinion%2F2013%2F01%2Fundrafted-players-have-been-noticeable-this-nhl-season.html&ei=tJFoUe2bNfbF4AOH14CwAQ&usg=AFQjCNG-Q0HbTFv0e0U-usbNLttX0-IkrQ&sig2=4SpqD-2xww3bmtT4O9VGrQ&bvm=bv.45175338,d.dmg. 84 if you include Dekeyser and Sustr.

And you are right 18 regulars would be average. But I think our 18 would be one of the best if teams couldn't trade players and when you consider top 10 picks are almost a sure bet to make it and we haven't had one at all and If you consider that we have the least amount of first rounders and averaged the lowest drafting position in that time it is quite incredible

This is a mixed bag. No we haven't had many 1st round picks, and 63% of those become career NHL players. So on that front we are doing well. But if you look at the ages of these guys, you see where our problem is. There are a bunch of guys 25 and younger, and several 30 and older. Very few in the 25-30 range, which should be most players prime years. Which of course goes back to the not having many 1st round picks. Last season was even worse with Nick and Hommer still playing.

The list said regulars so even fourth line guys can be on there. Meaning soon well see nyqiust, Tatar, Sheehan and more.

I missed Helm, so that makes 19

Around 95% of top 10 picks become career NHLers (which would mean that around 40% of 1st rounders picked after 10 become career NHLers and I'm sure it's even lower after 20 (where the Wings 1st rounders all come from)) and we haven't had any (top 10).

There are more 25-30s than under 25s or over 30s on the list.

There was an in depth study on he success in the NHL, based on where you are drafted, done in 08 IIRC. They used 200 career games as the standard of career NHL player. Of the 1st round picks from 1990 through 2005, 63% become career NHL players. 25% of second round picks became career NHL players. of all the picks 3rd round and later, only 12% became career NHL players. I am sure a nexus search will find it.

I wasn't disagreeing with you about the 63%, it sounds right on to me. What I was saying is that of the 63% (about 19 out of 30) a much higher percentage comes from the top 10 meaning a much lower percentage than 63% must come from the picks drafted after 10.
