The Race for Eight: Blue Jackets, Stars, Wings

We are sucking. I wouldn't bet money on a single win. Do I think we could give, I dunno the Avs a run for their money? Yes. Do I think we could maybe steal a couple against Chicago? Maybe. But I wouldn't bet on it.

I cannot help but wonder why you're here then. I'm past the point where I get pissed at these kinds of posts because there's nuthin' I can do about your attitude(s). But I cannot help but be bewildered about why you repeat your frustrations and negs over and over and over. You're not alone at this, but come on! Why do any of you bother showing up? Why get yourself all het up again? (And some of us, too.)

I look at it like this...if we play hard and win 4 or 5 games I am thrilled..... Dont want to limp in an extend the streak do to other teams collapse. Lets earn it boys and extend the streak with bluecollar effort and intensity.

If they play hard and win 4 or 5 games (having only 4 games left).....they would pull off a record which will likely never be matched

Because I'm a Wings fan?

You're a parent. I dunno if you really are or not. (I'm not.) But, you're a parent. And you've got a kid. And this kid, well, he f***s up. A lot. And he's in deep. And some days, you catch yourself wishing he was never born.

But, at the end of the day, he's your kid. And you stand by him.

Doesn't mean you have to like his s***, though.

I saw my mistake but was too lazy to edit....but the way this season has gone I'm not ruling out that anything can happen, even the impossible:)

Quite possibly the worst analogy ever. If a person catches themselves wishing their son/daughter was never born....then I'd say something is seriously wrong with that individual.

Why do any of you bother showing up?

this is actually a really good question. the players obviously stopped caring a long time ago...so why should we care?

I'm not a parent either, but I just...does that actually happen?! I can't imagine thinking that...

You really, REALLY think they stopped caring? If you honestly believe that then you are REALLY wasting your time here.

Here's the update, as of April 22nd:

post-7882-0-86393100-1366650394_thumb.jpg

Columbus and Dallas have been trending plenty better than the Wings and Wild over the past 10, but at this point the Wings have the supposed advantage of games in hand.

Columbus has the fewest games remaining at two, one of which is against Dallas. The best the Wings can hope for is a game ending in regulation there, and Nashville to beat them in the last game of the season, which may very well decide whether the Wings are in or out, regardless of what we do in our last few games.

Dallas plays at San Jose, who has played well of late, before finishing against Columbus and Detroit. Head-to-head to end the season is a REAL must win. Whoever loses is out.

The Wings have a game in hand on both Dallas and Minnesota. Minnesota hasn't been playing good down the stretch, much like the Wings, but their final 3 games are against the Kings and bottom-feeders Edmonton and Colorado. Assuming they don't play down to their competition like the Wings, we can assume we won't make up the 3 point spread over our last 4.

Columbus can land at 51-55 points (needs win against DAL to stay alive)

Minnesota can land at 51-57 points (controls their own destiny)

Dallas can land at 48-54 points (needs wins against both CBJ and DET to stay alive)

Detroit can land at 48-56 points (needs win against DAL bad)

Detroit currently has the tie breaker on Columbus, but not Dallas or Minnesota.

Detroit has 3 of 4 at home, but one back-to-back.

not with parents that should be parents it doesn't. Maybe talk to a parent that has lost a child before making dumb ass comments like this. Gain a little perspective about life.

The Wings are in tough there's do doubt. I hope they get in but odds are not in their favor. both CBJ and the Stars are playing much better right now. The Wings need to get on a roll and win the rest of their games.

I am a parent. Of two grown kids. Never, ever - even when they drove us up walls or we were desperate for help - did I wish they'd never been born.

There's no comparison. The Red Wings are a pro athletic team that plays games. I have NO control over them, the coaches,

the manager or the owner. I love them, but not the way I love my kids. I was at least half responsible for their upbringing. I.have.nothing.to.do.with.the.upbringing.or.behavior.of.the.Wings. I can only wish them well. Or feel sad when they don't play well, or feel happy for THEM when they do.

It's really strange to me how often people say stuff like that. One too many inspirational sports movies I guess. Professional sports teams don't lose because they "don't care enough" or don't "want to win" or whatever. They lose because they're not talented enough to execute properly, haven't prepared properly, or are simply kept from executing by a superior team. All this ra-ra, win one for the Gipper, b.s. is garbage. They're professional athletes, they all "care".

It can quite possible be either way. It's either something wrong with individual who wishes it, or whoever is wished upon.... No?

... They're professional athletes, they all "care".

No. Have you seen that episode with Kostytsin was going for a change while opposition scored on a breakaway?

No, not all of them care.

I don't think it's a bad analogy at all. Except, yeah, for that part, but that was meant to be a light-hearted allusion to the way we all curse this team's existence (and we all have, at one point or another, or several, or several hundred).

I don't think being critical (and, sure, maybe over-critical) of this team warrants a "Then why are you a fan?" I'm a fan because I'm a fan. I've been with this team most of my life. It's in my blood. Sure, it's not literally family, but it has a special place in my heart.

When this team does well, I'm here, and I'm not so negative. Because - wait for it - there's not as much to be negative about.

What kills me about this roster is, it's good enough to make a very respectable run. It's good enough to decimate any team on any given night. But it doesn't. And typically I blame Holland, because he hasn't fetched such and such a piece. But, honestly, I'm not convinced we'd be any better with a Bobby Ryan or what have you. This team's real problems are, IMHO, in the hearts and minds of its players.

I definitely agree with this to an extent - motivation is played up too much. But it does have a significant role at times (as was alluded to, Kostitsyn's line change comes to mind).

No, not all of them care.

A pass fumbled over his stick, which proceeded to a race for the puck and a mis-judged line-change. He had thought his teammate had the back-check and didn't see the play developing. That doesn't automatically equate that he doesn't care, it equates that he had horrible judgement and decision making.

This Kostitsyn thing is overplayed. Remember against Calgary when Brunner quit early on a shift and Jimmy threw up his hands after getting scored on? Didn't hear anybody saying "Brunner" didn't care, or didn't want it. He f*cked up and made a bonehead mistake, probably because he was exhausted and therefore wasn't paying attention to the play developing. Same with Kostitsyn, but he's from Nashville and he's Russian and his last name's Kostitsyn so all of the sudden the doesn't care if he wins or loses, gets scored on or not.

I don't know about others, but I was extremely critical of Howard's lack of effort on that play. I don't want to get into that whole conversation again, but it would be absolutely wrong to say that people criticized Kostitsyn only because he's from Nashville and/or becaues he's Russian.

he can give soundbites in interviews "i have played poorly" bla bla bla. who gives a s***?

when I seem him refuse to skate for a loose puck, my mind is made up.

Well whatever the reason, he gets castigated for "quitting on the play" while Brunner does the same s*** and not a peep around here.

While Detroit has an advantage based off of games played, which team would you put money on getting in? The jackets have been on a tear lately. And surely have a lot of confidence going into the week.

Hopefully the wings take this 1 game at a time. Start with a win tonight and things start to get easier.

Well, you are not paying attention to details, then. First, you've said about all professional athletes.Second, Kostitsyn is not Russian.

And, yes, Brunner did not care. otherwise he would not make such a bonehead mistake. Just because he is a professional athlete.

I'm not saying they don care at all. But some of they plays are result of 'don't care' state of mind. It seem that state of mind kinda prevails this year for wings.

Good call, they make mistakes so they obviously don't care. That's rock solid logic.
