Shows how great this organization is:
Paul MacLean- great coach for Ottawa
Todd mclellan- great coach for SJ
Stevie Y- gm for Tampa
Jim Nill- possibly gm for stars

Am I missing anyone?

Yup. Bossa has been great for Chicago.

Mark Howe doesn't seem to have the personality to be a GM.  I don't really care what his last name is.  I want a GM who can do the job.  Former star players don't often succeed as General Managers.  Plus, Mark Howe is almost 58 years old.  Not really of "grooming" age.   I don't really see Ken Holland going anywhere anytime soon.

That's fine.

I didn't want Jim Nill replacing Holland anyway.  Their philosophy can't be that much different from one another.

This.  They both hate fighting in hockey which I couldn't be more opposed to.

Have to figure that if there's any grooming to be done internally, the next in line is Ryan Martin.

Fighting is the thing that is SUPPOSED to keep guys like Matt Cooke from hurting other players.

I wonder if we can bring Hakan over to the front office anytime soon, leaving Lids to head up swedish scouting (which he is already doing anyway). That would be huge.

Why would we want Hakan Andersson here?  Lidstrom has not proven himself to be an accomplished scout.  Just because he was a good player doesn't necessarily mean he's a great scout.  I'm guessing Lidstrom has more of a figurehead type job.

Yeah, he signed Jordin Tootoo because he hates fighting in hockey.

Switch to decaf & take off the tin foil hat.

From Craig Custance:

"Red Wings GM Ken Holland likes to joke that Lidstrom's retirement press conference will be followed shortly by his own"

From Bob McKenzie:

“DET GM Kenny Holland always used to joke, at least I think he was joking, that he would retire five minutes after Nick Lidstrom retired.”

From Kevin Allen @ US Today:

"GM Ken Holland used to joke that he was going to retire when Lidstrom retired"

And strung along?  The same man who was at the top of pretty much every team's wish list that had an opening the past couple of years, was given opportunities to interview for them, & turned them all down due to the fact he wanted to stay in Michigan as his wife was battling cancer?  The same man that was paid as much as GM's throughout the league & was on record saying that he loved the autonomy that Kenny gave him to do his job?  That's being strung along?  In the immortal words of Sgt. Hulka, "Lighten up, Francis".

Good for Nill.  He's ready to move on to the next step of his career & run his own team and good for the Wings to recognize it's time too, just like they did with Stevie.

Excellent post.

Yawn.

Yeah, he signed Jordin Tootoo because he hates fighting in hockey.

And they outwardly admitted how "uncomfortable" they were in doing so.

Is there any thread you guys can't bastardize and turn into an argument?  Let's keep this about Jim and his new job, please.

Can't wait to read the "Phoenix: I still think it's a hockey market" chapter of Gary Bettman's autobiography. I'm guessing it's going to be chapter 11.

Discussing Jim Nill's GM style isn't "keeping this about Jim"?

Would rather have kept him and send Devellano to the Stars, but man this is a great hiring for them.

Wouldn't be surprised if Draper takes Nill's spot....have to start somewhere.

On a related note, if we have to trade one of Fil or Franzen to someone, at least Nill may be comfortable with those guys!

Sad to see Nill go.  I'd always hoped that Kenny would get promoted to Senior VP and Nill take over the GM role.

Best of luck to Nill.  Dallas is a city that wants to have a winning team, so he's got his work cut out for him.  If he'd like to send us a Swede, I think Loui Eriksson would be a nice fit here... :sly:

I'm betting that Ryan Martin (currently the Wings' Asst' GM of Hockey Operations) will take Nill's spot.  Martin is whom Kenny refers to as his "Cap-ologist", and was heavily courted by Yzerman when he left to go to TB.

Covert Ops has its perks. You travel, make your own hours, and expense most of your meals.
The downside? Lots of people want you dead...

Jim Nill will be the Stars GM because Joe Nieuwendyk got his pants pulled down by Ray Shero.....twice.....

Bingo.

Could be other reasons lol but that was spot on.
