Drafting DeKeyser

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

DeKeyser's a good player in this league right now, even at his young age. And there's definitely the sense that he's only going to get better. Much better. Which is pretty crazy. Why? Because we're the Wings, and - IMHO - he's essentially a first-round pick. Maybe not quite first-overall, but certainly up there.

Or is he?

About where would Dekeyser go (i.e. get picked) in your average NHL draft? Or, to put a finer point on it: Did we really just land the rough equivalent of a first-overall? (Ah, parity.)

I say we are seeing 80% capacity Dekeyser. I really think he is a lot like Fetisov. His swagger and toughness will improve over the next 3 years. I haven't seen enough of him against the Stamkos, Toews, and Crosby like guys to call him a true shut down D like Lidstrom was, but he's shutting down non-1st team all stars. That's pretty damn good for 20 games in.

This draft is a bit deeper than most recent drafts so I agree with the top 15 that others have said, in a normal draft this kid is probably top 7.

As said he would have been the 2nd best d-man behind Popeye, err umm Seth Jones, the league is starting to look a d-men a lot different than it used to.

With the growth and stellar play of guys like Doughty, Weber, Suter, Hamilton(I know not same class as the others mentioned, but damn impressive as a rookie) etc... young studs on the blue line are becoming more and more valuable.

He is NHL ready, and he is defensively solid, not an offensive minded guy who needs sharpen his D game (The aforementioned Hamilton comes to mind).

But like I said this is predicted to be a deep draft of NHL ready players, so he is probably top 15.

Had he played in a major tournament before the draft and played as well as he has played for the Wings so far, that probably puts him top 7 even in this draft. Now if he scored as well as played this well defensively he probably gets picked right after Jones.

Instead, he is a WING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YEAH M****R F****R!!

Just curious, how did he manage to skip being drafted?

Believe it or not, his skating was pretty horrible in his younger years. His skating really came to light within the past 1-2 seasons. His size was a problem, and overall he wasn't the player he is today. In honesty, I think he made his most development between his sophomore and junior year when he knew he wanted to go to the NHL the following year. He could have gone to the NHL last year, but he wanted that extra year to get his body ready and get smoother wheels. It paid off big time as he certainly has made the transition very smooth.

To add on top of that, DeKeyser has always valued his education. He put his education before hockey, and it showed big time last year when he didn't go to the NHL. In his latest interviews, he says how Andy Murray (IIRC) had a big impact on that. Murray showed him statistics of players that left their sophomore year, and then their junior year and graduation rates. Sophomores were sitting at like 10-13% and Juniors were sitting at 60-70%. With a difference that big, and his motivation to gain a degree, it influenced him to stay another year.

well DeKeyser was eligible for the 2008 NHL entry draft I believe...

looking at that draft class I would say Danny D would fit in around the ten spot. essentially we got a top 10 pick in my mind.

Defensemen usually take a little while to develop, I guess time will tell how good he will really be.
