Abdelkader suspended 2 games for hit on Lydman

If reckless contact to the head was the reason for suspension why isn't Perry suspended for losing control of his skate and kicking Howard in the HEAD

I think it has to do with Howard being "just a Red Wing."

All I can say is, if the Wings are not furious and fired up to win by this latest travesty of so-called justice, then perhaps there's a reason they won't move on. They have to respond tomorrow on the ice, appropriately, by out-playing the classless Ducks and beating them, fair and square.

This means watching their hits, staying out of the box (legitimately - nothing much they can do about bad calls and non-calls), and giving Jimmy some help --- and some GOALS, for heaven's sake.

There really is no option, other than to go home with a whimper and allow this nonsense to happen to them. I think this team is better than that, personally.

Go, Wings!

All the talk of abolishing Shanahan's name from the Cup aside, Abdelkader has provided just 13 points in 50 games, playing mostly alongside Datsyuk. Not a big loss but knowing Babcock, he'll insert Samuelsson or Cleary into the top line. Not much improvement there. At least Bert gets to play

Where is our resident GIF-master? We need a gif much like the Thronton Light Sabre one with Abby's hit as Shanahan seen it. His head being severed by Abby's supposed elbow with significant head contact...

Why not put Tootoo on Datsyuk line in place of Abby?

I knew this suspension was coming. I don't like the hit but I also don't think it was dirty. There's no way Shanahan could suspend Gryba for what was obviously a clean hit and then not suspend Abby for his questionable one. I'm upset to lose Abby but if he got nothing and we won the series it would be the only thing anybody remembered about it. I don't want to have to deal with people saying Shanahan gave this round of the playoffs to his ex team. I want to beat them without Abby and have them left reaching for excuses as to how the 7th seed Red Wings managed to kill their post season.

The reason Perry didn't receive any discipline or even Weber last year:

"We need our stars playing in our games. - Gary Bettman"

That is what he said when Malkin's instigator was rescinded in 2009 thus allowing him to avoid the mandatory one game suspension for game 3. Weber and Perry are much more important to the NHL than Abdelkader is...They cannot have their stars being suspended...

Funny to hear everyone bad mouthing Smith for sticking up for Nyquist after he took an elbow. Now everyone is blaming Shanahan or Shea Weber for Abdelkader playing recklessly? Come on people. Let's just take the high road. Its over with. I want to see Smithor Ericsson light up Getzlaf this series at least once. That a-hole has to pay.

Yeah, but he was also one of the few Wings that actually hit, which in this case, got him in trouble. And If Tootoo sits again tomorrow, the physical play will remain lopsided.

I mean, despite what a some of the younger Red Wings fans may believe, there actually isn't a special, long-standing rule in place that says Detroit forwards are not allowed to body-check, though this suspension to Abdelkader will do nothing to dispel this myth.

Shanahan will just be another St. Louis Blues player to me now (actually he already was for inaction on Weber last year).

That is the worst insult he can get from Wings fandom.

Another St. Louis Blues player ... that helped us win 3 Stanley Cups...

Lets not get carried away. However you feel about this situation, Shanny will always be a Red Wing.

Soon as I saw Abs hit that guy it took me an instant of a second to know a game misconduct and a suspension bone head check coming in at that speed and the way Lydman was positioned towards Abs. Yes the league is inconsistent but I think they were right on this one big hits can still happen just keep away from people heads its not rocket science. I'm even more flabbergasted by the amount of blind fans who can't admit a spade is a spade. Wings have more important things to focus on and this suspension is the least of it.

Suspension or not, it was a stupid play. He hit a vulnerable player and left his feet while doing so. I understand that he was trying to energize the team, but it was an ill-advised action.

Yep. I was about to say the same thing.

^^^

Abdelkader made a stupid play, like hes done multiple times in the playoffs, and gave the NHL exactly what it wanted for making an easy example for their headshot rule. Everyone here may hate it, but, Abdelkader still made a jackass play trying to do something huge, and hurt the team by doing so.

This was a borderline call. That rule seems to have a lot of gray area... I wouldn't really oppose this suspension if Souray (sp?) was disciplined for his reckless hit from behind on Abby

I think they should put Brunner or nyquist on the first line, and put tootoo in on the third line and Bert on the fourth. Tootoo has good speed, so he would probably fit in with the third line. The third line has been really pesky for a while, but this series they haven't been quite as effective as I expected (maybe because none of them have any playoff experience). Putting tootoo on that line may spark them to play more like the energy line that they are/.

If babcock doesn't do that, then its time to split Dats and Z. I think he mentioned possibly doing that for tomorrow's game. Put Dats with franzen and Bert, and Z can go with fil and Clears. Hopefully Z can spark Fil, since they always seem to click when they're together. Also, despite Bert's ailment, all he has to do is get open and Datsyuk can set him up, Mule as well

Regardless of what Babcock does, I expect the wings to come out flying tomorrow. I think it will be a statement game.

LGW!
