Abdelkader suspended 2 games for hit on Lydman

^^^

Abdelkader made a stupid play, like hes done multiple times in the playoffs, and gave the NHL exactly what it wanted for making an easy example for their headshot rule. Everyone here may hate it, but, Abdelkader still made a jackass play trying to do something huge, and hurt the team by doing so.

Agreed 100%. He didn't need to hit the guy like he did for the check to be effective.

Looking at the replays I don't know how anyone could believe it was a legal hit.

If any player hit ANY Red Wing with that same hit we would want his head along with at least 5 games.

I don't think that it should have been a suspension, but the amount of vitriol around here is a little over the top. I mean, while we might disagree with his call, it is at least a defensible call. I get the frustration, but I'm not understanding the level of hate.

Also, the Weber call (or lack thereof), while infuriating at the time, is completely irrelevant with regards to this. That's in the past. And a completely different play.

I think it's more of a product of a frustrating year with a marginal team that is now losing one of its most physical players at a time when it needs all hands on deck.

This Wings team already lacked physicality, and with Abby out, they'll basically have none.

Good god, are people actually mad at Shanahan for suspending Abby on what was obviously a dirty play? Why did he jump at all? Had he not left his feet he would have not hit the dude in the head at all, and he still would have crushed him...LEGALLY.

Anybody blaming Shanny, or talking about how the integrity of the game is ruined now, needs to head to the doctor's office and get checked out. You have an acute case of homerism that could turn deadly.

Completely false. I wish every hit like that in the league was legal. Our players get their heads up and don't put themselves in a position to get injured.

Sadly, you all know that even if he didn't leave his feet but if guy was on ice injured we would have had same outcome (maybe not the in game major)...

And I said before, if Gryba going to get suspended for his 98% clean hit, Abs was for sure going to get one. However, if you read the Eller thread, I posted vid of Subban hit (that is very close to Kronwall type hits except he does leave feet) that goes uncalled and unpunished. I am more pissed at the inconsistency. The Refs are inconsistent in the games but even that can be forgiven, we all know how fast the game plays... but some of that inconsistency comes directly from the league office (ie. Shanahan).

This was a borderline call. That rule seems to have a lot of gray area... I wouldn't really oppose this suspension if Souray (sp?) was disciplined for his reckless hit from behind on Abby

Way too much gray area! This is why fans get so upset about the inconsistency, there is way to much room for interpretation. I mean really, exactly how far is "a considerable amount of distance"?

Personally I think Abby is sitting the next two games because of an "injury", take it out of the conversation and this whole scenario doesn't even play out. It's either a legal hit or it isn't, an injury should have no influence in penalty or the suspension.

Tootoo made what was essentially the same hit early this season resulting in no injury. They played on and the hit was old news by the end of the night..

And don't forget Selanna punching Dekeyser in back of head. Isn't that "going for the head"? Guess it falls under same clause as Webber (if its not an actual hockey play, its basically MMA move) we can't punish it.

Again, everyone is entitled to their opinion. Everyone sees it differently, it's not homerism.

They just need to rally around this and have everyone step it up. Easier said than done sure, but what's done is done. The decision isn't gonna change. Do I like it? No. But s*** happens, and one player does not make a team. Stick Bert on the top line to be a net front presence, and get Tootoo back in to hit everything that moves. He was very effective the last few games of the season so there is no reason why he cant continue to be. BELIEVE.

Well there are lots of opinions in the world, but only some of them are right. By any definition that's charging. Plus he hit him in the head. Plus he injured him. Suspension every time. If he hit him in the head but didn't charge, or if he charged but didn't hit him in the head, we wouldn't be talking about this right now. He did both, and he deserved the suspension because of it.

I'd love to see Tatar in the lineup. What I saw of Bertuzzi showed that he is not ready to play. I agree with Tootoo because of his intensity.

Do you ever see Smith knocked on his ass??? No because he has his head up and force people to bounce off of him

I don't like at all that the fact that there was an injury is one of the key points that was used to determine the punishment. That's why people get so frustrated. Who cares if the player got seriously injured or jumped right back up? That should be irrelevant. Players are getting whacked int he head all game long, it's just a matter of whether or not the player getting hit stays down or gets injured.

Homer got his ass beat every game but because he was in front of the net, that was an acceptable location to take a beating.

Just maddening .

I guess Kronwall should be suspended infinite games with all the similar hits he's put on players, just like that.

Bottom line is why do the Wings ever go in with one arm loose on a guy? That's a dumb play. Go in shoulder down and then the elbow has to be down.
