On the bright side this wasn't the worst loss of the playoffs for us. I fully expect the Wings to bounce back. They can beat Chicago.

I think the biggest difference in the game last night is that when Chicago had the puck and was coming over our blue line, they were doing it with speed and with a purpose.  When we were attacking them, we were floating over the blue line most of the time, and how many times will go offside making passes over the blue line?  Cleary did it once or twice last night, and he does it every game.  Flip and Mule are terrible for that too.  Hustle down to the hash marks and then do something inside the zone instead of pussyfooting around the blue line and giving the puck away.

Dan Cleary is an Xbox 360.  While good for a while, it's time for the new generation to take over.

I posted this in another thread and I think it needs to be said again.  The Wings have been traveling back and forth across the country playing Anaheim for the last two weeks.  It took 7 games most of them went to OT.  The Hawks played Minnesota and it took only 5 games.  Less travel, less games.  The Hawks are very well rested and the Wings are understandably burned out.  Last night, was to be expected.  The Wings look slow and tired.  They looked like a team that had a rough first round and the Hawks looked like a well rested team.

Will a couple days off help?  We'll find out.

Flat out zero organization the whole game.  Hardly any tape-to-tape passes - offensive, defensive, and neutral zone.  More "throw it toward somebody and hope for the best" - not the way to be a puck possession team.  I'd make the team do passing drills at speed from net to net all this morning.

And just tentative as hell.  If by some miracle we get it through the neutral zone it's almost like the blue line scares us.  Can't enter the zone with the puck?  Dump it in and fight 3 guys for it.  Where is the support?  I'm triple teamed - somebody is freaking open!  Nope - they have two support guys ready to scoop up the puck if it squirts out.  Nonexistant transition game.  If it gets out of the zone, then go for a change - you've done your job. Move your feet!

Bad decisions!  Going to the net with the puck?  Let me pass it behind me to someone who has two guys on him.  The HELL?  It's just you and the goalie, man!  Shoot the puck!  On PK, let me try to skate the puck out rather than lofting it when I get a stick on it.  You get a stick on it, you freaking clear it!

And Smith.  Jesus what is his problem? Yea, he's green, but he's been increasing his defensive zone turnovers since game 1 of the first round.  Sh*t, sit the kid and bring Whitey in.  Anybody at this point.

And WHAT is the deal with third periods this year!?  It's like the guys are unionized to play 50 minutes per game with a 10 minute break, and by Gods they're going to get that break in.  Ahead by 3 goals or even, we're having tea on the bench during at least half the third.  Sixty minutes of effort!

They left Howie out to dry last night.  Hawks are good and all, but a lot of that the Wings did to themselves.  The good news is, the Ducks series showed that the Wings can play (some games) with none of these problems.  If you guys play like that again, you need to be shining up the clubs, because clearly you've given up on hockey for this season.

Because it stifles actual discussion. Or if you try reading through past pages, you have to go through 10 posts for each game event. If you have an actual opinion to post, fine, but do we really need 30 posts screaming "GGGGGGGGGOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL"? It's a general discussion thread, not amateur play by play hour.

I don't agree. So go through ten posts, it won't kill you. And meanwhile, some readers who can't get the game are getting current input they might not be able to get otherwise. And I appreciate the excitement generated when our guys do something good. It's comraderie. (sp) It's like we're all in a bar yelling and whooping together.

Edit: Sorry about the repeat. On my iPad at the hospital and don't know how to fix it!

I wish Bertuzzi would take a run at someone.

Waste of size right now.  And whatever skill he has is being wasted on the 4th line.

Another way to look at it is that it would really fire him up is he was able to add to the game, even maybe getting an assist.

I hope somebody spears him in the crotch just like he did to Lids in '09

ok perhaps that's a bit harsh, but I do hope something bad happens to him out there

Nah that's not too harsh... indeed, let us hope he gets speared in the nads.

Gee, congrats, do you want us to tell you how awesome you are? You've said plenty more things that did not pan out.

Lashoff is not better than Smith.

Please refrain from putting down other posters. Absolutely not necessary.

Are we comparing Toronto to Chicago...just wanted to be sure thats what we're doing ?

The Wings played the way a lot of us fans felt....very lethargic disinterested and its 'just' game 1.

Danny cleary!!! The heart of a warrior. The defensive coverage of a dunce

Yep. It's all on Danny. Forget the fact that there were consistent and incessant f***-ups all over the ice last night by every one of our guys except Howard. This Cleary crap has become weirdly obsessive and way over-simplistic. And NO. I do not agree that he is consistently the worst player on the ice.

The Wings need to start scoring on the pp plain and simple, you know the Hawks are going to score on most of their pp's so the Wings need to match that. At least 1 or 2 would be nice.

I'm guessing the game wasn't televised in Russia?

Howie was good tonight, but those first 2 goals he let in were weak by his standards. They were not softies, but he has shown he is capable of making those saves. he'll come out next game and prove it. The wings need to minimize their turnovers, and just shoot the damn puck. The PP needs to be better, they had 3 chances to take the lead and failed. If they score on one of those it's a completely different game.

Disagree. Oduya's goal wasn't weak by anyone's standards. The Wings were gassed, couldn't clear the zone, and Oduya walked right done the slot, completely unmolested. Howard came out to challenge, and was squared up to him pretty well . . . Oduya just fired a laser that was, in a word, Datsyukian.

If shooting is the problem, then Flip and Cleary need to be kept off the same line.  Cleary will shoot, but he loses the puck just as often.  Flip will try to pass on a breakaway.  Kills all offense.

This seems to be an LGW pattern year after year, but I always find it funny that when the Wings get severely worked over in a game or series, LGW'ers key in on that 12th forward or 6th defenseman as the thing we can change to turn things around.  I think there's a lot of people with egg on their face about Tootoo, who dismissed the fact that he was a healthy scratch all year, and that (except for one surprising deflection down the stretch) he was an absolute non-factor towards anything having to do with a scoring sheet.  The Hawks ultimately dominated that game last night - did Daniel Carcillo have anything to do with it?  So what is it about this impulse to throw in bit players and expect them to completely change the dynamics of the 52 minutes they aren't even on the ice?

Brendan Smith needs to sit down.  I'll admit to being wrong about him - I had a (quiet) suspicion that he was "over-ripened" and showed Top 4 Defenseman potential.  He might still do that someday, but he cannot be trusted right now.  That was one of the single worst defensive performances I can recall as a Wings fan, dating back to the days when they couldn't figure out that Derian Hatcher couldn't skate anymore.  We're talking Lebda's worst day, multiplied by four, levels of futility.  He may have only directly generated their first goal, but his constant turnovers and inability to ever solidly possess the puck in our own zone were extremely unsettling to the team.  Give me Ian White, Lashoff, whatever...just not that again.

Still a winnable series. Played better then them in the 1st, and ran out of gas midway thru the 2nd and relied on Howard. He was great last night, get our legs back and take home ice back in Game 2.

That's fine, I think a majority disagree with you though.  He was responsible for a 2 goal swing alone (Not shooting/not covering his man).   Anytime he touches the puck he turns it over, he will try to skate into the zone, dump it to them, or trap himself against the boards and have it taken.

Thanks for thinking that's fine about what I said.   Of course I know I'm in the minority.  I don't care.  Doesn't change my opinion.  And I believe what you really meant to say was that most other posters agree with you.  That's fine too.
