Octopus Toss Suggestions/Advice GAME 4

Rate this topic

33 posts in this topic

Fellow wings fans, I am making the trip to Game 4 from out of town. I have some experience with throwing a pie; I tossed one at he UC as time expired after a win a few years ago and another during the same series after an OT goal in that same series, Game 5 I believe in 2009. I am just wondering if the crackdown that occurred recently has been backed off at all, I just don't want to get ejected from my seat that I paid good money for, it is unfortunately just not worth it for me. If anybody has seen some tosses this year and can let me know if people are getting thrown out of the arena. Let me know, I might be a ***** like before and hold it until the end. Just curious, I think it is a great tradition and really fires up the crowd when people do it.

Just don't give Chicago free time outs like at the end of game 3.

Came here to say same thing... be better if it helped the Wings when they needed a blow. But I understand its hard to not want to throw it after a huge Wings goal.

"I guess it comes down to a simple choice, really. Get busy living or get busy dying."

Haha, just kidding. You're already legendary for having thrown one! No shame in throwing it at the end of the game! I'd imagine the best, most inconspicuous times are during the national anthem and after a goal.

I've never done it or thought about doing it, but it is an interesting question as to WHEN you do it. Throwing it after the national anthem is a nice traditional way to do it that will probably get your "pi" on TV and Sobotka out there waiving it around. But if you sit on it too long, there's the possibility the Wings will be down 4-0 or something late in the game, which would be sort of anticlimactic.

In Game 3, you got the sense that a bunch of people were sitting on them when Chicago looked like they were going to come back, and then after the Datsyuk goal you got the late stoppages when it looked like we might win. But that last minute took forever, in part because people were tossing the octopus.

Great tradition, just be smart about when you do it.

they will toss you if they catch you, but if you can do it without being spotted you should be fine, just hope you aren't near a lot of hawks fans or sour puss wings fans.

I am in the front row... So maybe I should move for the toss, I can't do the national anthem as I don't want to be out before the game has started... I am hoping for a last minute empty netter or something (or OT, but I hope it doesn't get there.). I guess I have no problem holding it and not tossing, maybe I will do a little asking around and see if anybody behind/ near me is willing to take the risk since I'll have smuggled it in and my brother and I will run some good interference. If I am able to get on here in-game, I can give a real-time update as to when to expect it, could be fun if anybody is on the forum while watching.

On the subject, I was at game 2 and I was disappointed that nobody had one to toss in CHI, I do not blame them as it can be hostile in there. However, if anybody goes to game 5, I would love to see it done during the Anthem or after a goal; if someone can dress incognito, have a little group to walk with and briskly leave a different section than their seats, I would like to start a donation fund for somebody to possibly have a seafood item; what they do with it is not my business though.... I will donate 10 if somebody can set up an account to be paid after the game or something, if there are enough people who also would like to add, maybe the person could feed a large family and supplement if not pay for a game ticket.

If someone decides to to through this seafood onto the ice in Chicago at an appropriate time, Anthem or after a goal, (which none of us would be advocating for), it would be a nice slap in the face that too many hawks fans deserve...

Go Wings!

This.

Timing is key, some dolt threw one last night when Chicago was down 3-1 without a time out and their top guys were gassed, they ended up getting a minute or so of free rest.

In game 1 of the first round, didn't a faceoff get moved out of the offensive zone because of an octopus? Edited by wingsfan4795

When that one was thrown in Anaheim didn't it look slimier than normal? Like they didn't know to boil it out there?

Hmmm, this thread got me thinking... what if fans threw an octopus onto the ice after the Red Wings had iced the puck and clearly needed a break? What would the referees do if it was obviously a ploy to rest the players?

I remember how many times the NBC commentator would credit a player with a "wily veteran move" to buy his linemates some extra time... wonder if they'd give the same credit to fans. :g:

ETA: I know that there's a provision that allows the referee to assess a delay of game penalty to the home team if fans obviously are interfering, but I don't remember ever seeing that happen. I'm curious how it would be handled.

I think if people start doing things like that, they'll start cracking down on 'pi throwing and it will ruin the fun for us all

As was I, that was getting a little ridiculous. I am all for throwing the octupi but wings fans gotta be smarter and realize they are tired and don't have a timeout.

You need a fan shield. You have to ask everyone around you to stand up so it's unclear who did it. I've seen that tactic.

At the last game, some stud hurled a pi from the upper bowl right in front of me. What a champ! I was impressed.

I believe Buppy said it best:

"Good rule of thumb is always take an octopus everywhere. Better to have one and not need it than find yourself thinking, "Damn, I wish I had that octopus".

I personally prefer during end of national anthem but you gotta do what you gotta do I guess. I can't see them calling the penalty on the Wings if it was thrown in the middle of the game, though the rule does exist there, somewhere. I guess I've never seen it called but it's not to say it's never been called.

Wasn't there also something that came out a few years ago that said Al Sobotka could no longer spin an octopus over his head on while on the ice to pump the crowd up, thus his spinning of it only after leaving the ice surface that went on a few years, and now he just completely ignores it?

HFBoard guy claimed he was at game and during last game when about 3 were thrown late in the game, the announcer said a delay of game penalty would happen if another was thrown, and another was thrown and nothing happened. Thankfully. If Uncle Gary wants Detroit to get penalized, I am sure he will give the edict down from high.

Well, I bought little AL... Wish me luck, I will try to get a human shield, but like I said I am up-front and there happens to be an usher in the section that always looks into the crowd after a detroit goal, like he is looking for a toss. The OT winner I threw a few years ago, was from the same seats, I didn't care as much if I missed the Western Conference Trophy presentation, no big deal; but I did my best to be sneaky and literally tip-towed behind the usher as he was looking for other tossers and winged it, my bro said that he was turning his head when a fellow fan pulled the assist by grabbing the usher to give him a high-five/hug-- teamwork :) I will avoid giving them a free timeout if they do not have any left, god knows if they are within 2 with >5 minutes, we can let them back in, but if we get an empty netter, or some other nail in the coffin, I'll toss at discretion.

I hope Bettman says something stupid about the Octopus again because we could go all the way in a few years (or a miracle year this season) and I pray that somebody holds onto one to throw right as he gets the mic to "congratulate" us. Wouldn't mind if it was never boiled and extra juicy so that he might get a little spray.

Go Wings!

Did you end up tossing an octopus tonight?

What if we take this even further, and throw it after a Chicago goal? It may break up any momentum the hawks may have gained, and would give our guys an extra little spark before play resumed?

Those 2 that got thrown and that landed next to each other seemed JUICY. I think someone forgot to boil them.

HAHA, those were thrown from my section, at a dumb time, and they were not boiled-- I got hit with residue. Here is my report: the section I was in had an usher who is a complete toolbag, had to tell every person not to bang on the glass... (Section was near one of the circles, not by a bench or anything). I went for the toss even though I had a strong feeling that if caught, the guy would do anything to get me the fine etc. I got it out with the empty net, it was very small and I went ninja toss person to right and bro to left of me both didnt even see. Usher was facing other way. SUCCESS. KEEP IT UP EVERYONE! It is a great tradition, but do it right, after goal, after winning game or maybe after a period. And boil them, your kitchen will smell a bit, but thats what a fan deals with :)
