INSANE grand rapids roster next season full of prospects

Nyquist, Andersson and Tatar should / will be up full time with the Wings this season, as well as DeKeyser and Lashoff as the 7th defenseman. Mursak signed with Amur Khabarovsk in the KHL so he's out and as far as I know, Backman is playing one more year with Linkoping in the SEL, and Athanasiou and Paterson are playing one more year in the OHL with their repective clubs. So I would like to see something like this...

Jurco - Jarnkrok - Frk

Tvrdon - Sheahan - Pulkkinen

Hoggan - Ferraro - Pare

Callahan - Aubry - Glendening

Ouellet - Sproul

Almqvist - Marchenko

Billins - Jensen

Paetsch

Mrazek

Coreau

That is a very solid team in my opinion.

Players that should be traded away, let go or sent down to Toledo would be McCollum, Evans (I know he's a captain but there just isn't any room for him on the back end), Fournier, Nicastro, Skinner, Raedeke, Grant, Parkes, Coetzee and Nestrasil.

Tatar, Nyquist and Andersson should be on the team, but will they? If they let Filppula, Cleary and Miller all walk, then there's a good chance. I highly doubt Lashoff will start the year in the NHL, they've got Kronwall, Ericsson, Quincey, Smith, Kindl, DeKeyser and Colaiacovo. I imagine Smith and Kindl are going to be retained, and I doubt anyone gets bought out on the back-end.

Some of the guys you listed are on AHL only contracts, so I'm not sure they can be sent down to the ECHL. And I'm also pretty sure that there is a cap on how many players you can keep in the ECHL at any given time. I know they have a vet limit of four, but I'm not sure on players with NHL contracts.

EDIT: Spoke with someone who knows a lot more than I do about major pro/minor hockey leagues. He said that he believes guys on AHL contracts can be sent down and that there isn't a limit on the number of guys who can be sent down to the ECHL. So, I basically feel like I know nothing about AHL/ECHL rules. Carry on.

Isn't there a cap on the amount of players owned by NHL clubs that a ECHL team can accept? I thought someone on here said six...but I can't find that info.

That could be right, I'm not sure either but if that is the case, I would pick the 6 players that have the best shot at making an impact in the ECHL or AHL level. I honestly don't see any of the guys I listed ever making an impact in the NHL. I would probably keep Evans and Skinner for their leadership qualities and Nicastro and Nestrasil in hopes that they can turn some heads.

Even if we bring back Filppula and one of either Cleary or Miller there would still be room for Nyquist, Andersson and Tatar. As for Lashoff, I'm pretty sure that he is out of minor league options next year. So if we don't have him up with the big club he has to pass through waivers, almost guaranteeing him being picked up by another team. I could be wrong on that but I'm pretty sure that is correct.

Well, I wasn't saying Lashoff was exempt from waivers - I'm just not sure who the odd man out would be. Unless they move Cola for a pick, or package one of the other guys... I'm just not sure who's moved.

As for the forwards, say we do re-sign Filppula and Cleary.

Abdelkader-Datsyuk-Franzen
Filppula-Zetterberg-Brunner
Tatar-Andersson-Nyquist
Eaves-Helm-Eaves
Bertuzz, Samuelsson, Emmerton & Tootoo

That's 16 forwards... with them carrying 7 d-men for sure, they're going to carry 14 forwards. So unless two of Helm, Samuelsson and Bertuzzi are spending the season on the IR, I don't see it working out.

Well if the option comes down to Lashoff and Colaiacovo, and Holland chooses to keep Carlo I would be extremely disappointed and I think it would be a huge mistake. Lashoff would be picked up by another team and I think he will be a solid shutdown guy for a long time in this league. We don't have many big body, shutdown guys in our system and we shouldn't let this one walk for nothing. I would be happy if the option were there for him to spend one more season in Grand Rapids but I'm not sure if he can, as far as I know he would have to pass through waivers. So Colaiacovo should definitely be traded away for something, anything, even if it's a late round draft pick.

I would keep all of those forwards but I would buy out Samuelsson and possibly Bertuzzi, and trade another player, maybe Tootoo or Emmerton or Eaves. I'd probably keep Emmerton just because he is a center and we may need a center if Helm isn't ready to start the season. And I would also sign a free agent on top of that. Here is what I would like to see, although I know it probably won't happen...

Stalberg - Datsyuk - Brunner

Filppula - Zetterberg - Franzen

Nyquist - Andersson - Tatar

Abdelkader - Helm - Cleary

Emmerton - Eaves

Kronwall - Ericsson

Smith - DeKeyser

Quincey - Kindl

Lashoff

That is the roster and lines I would start the season with, although all players are all pretty interchangeable from line to line...

Stalberg is by no means a first-line player.

I'd agree with Crymson there. Maybe swap Stalberg and Abby? I know we all have different feelings on him, but I think he could do just fine for a full season with Datsyuk.

LOL! Stalberg isn't a first line player but Abdelkader is? People have a pretty skewed opinion on who is and isn't a "first line player" or how to construct lines... It's not all about putting your top 3 players on the first line, 4th, 5th and 6th best players on the second line and so on... It's about what makes you a better team from top to bottom. The key with any successful team in today's NHL is the ability to roll 4 solid lines, there needs to be a balance.

To me, these are 4 great lines that would be able to match up against any line in the league. Besides, Stalberg is bigger than Abby, probably a little faster than Abby, much better hands than Abby, much better point producer than Abby... Need I go on?... I think Pav would love to have a guy like Stalberg on his line, and either another big body (Franzen) or a right handed sniper (Brunner). Out of all the free agents that are available, that I think we have a decent shot at getting, that won't cost us a fortune, Stalberg is definitely at the top of my list.

No, Stalberg isn't a top line guy. Watch more of him than just a highlight film. He is a borderline top 6, but in reality a third liner. Will stalberg pull the piano for Datsyuk to play it? The answer is no, but Abby would and does...

The Griffins announce the re-signing over their core veteran leadership.

Captain Jeff Hoggan, Nathan Paesch, Triston Grant, and Calder Cup clinching goal scorer Brennan Evans will all be back next year. Paesch and Evans are defenseman, Hoggan and Grant are forwards. Glad to see them all back.

And thanks to whoever changed the title of this thread. It was driving me crazy.

The next few years in Grand Rapids will be good ones. Our top prospects are finally ready to play in the minors, yes they'll be their for a while, but that's all for the better. The future is bright, Jurco-Jarnkrok-Pulkinen would be a deadly top unit next year.

Lets also not short change one of the real reasons why Grand Rapids won the Calder Cup last season. Blashill really did turn this team around. For years we had a good roster of players when Kurt Frasier was the coach, and for years we never made the playoffs. Blashill comes in, and in a single season takes the same players he had last season for the most part and turns them into champions. Yes, the roster looks good next season, despite the fact that Mursak, Nyquist, Tatar, Andersson, and Billins are gone. A lot is going to depend on how the new players do that are coming in.
