skyphoenix 153 Report post Posted July 5, 2013 Alfredson isn't a bad deal (still think Vinny would've been a much smarter way to go), and Weiss, while mostly lateral, was necessary and it's good to see that a hole was plugged instead of left wide open for a change. But I don't think losing Brunner is a good call. You can blame Sammy all you want with his injury complaint, but someone still signed him to a crazy stupid deal last summer in the first place. 1. Vinny wanted at least 5yrs, we signed Alfredsson for 1. 2. It wasn't Holland or the Wings losing Brunner, it's obvious he wanted to see where he could end up on other teams and what they'd pay him. Instead of waiting on him, we made moves to make our team better while we have someone coming up perfectly capable of taking his roster spot for less money. Guest The Axe Report post Posted July 5, 2013 Ansar Khan @AnsarKhanMLive 17m Holland said he's still trying to sign Cleary but Brunner is moving on. Dumb move by Brunner. Sionara, small fries. I hope Smith smashes your face and breaks your ribs with a huge body check next year if you get in our way. Keep your head up.
gcom007 1,465 Report post Posted July 5, 2013 1. 1) Vinny for 5 years at $4.5 million would've been a great signing with this team. He'd be better than Alfredsson for at least three of those years and as good or better over the last two. And $4.5 million isn't a bad cap hit for a player like him, and it's going to be less of a concern as the cap increases in the coming years. If it's over $80 million again in years 4 and 5, and it's very likely to be, $4.5 million won't feel bad at all knowing we got a $6-7 million dollar player for $4.5 the first three years. Give and take. Alfredsson will be a good addition next year most likely, but again, I'd rather have Vinny for 5 years. 2) We'll see. I didn't out and out blame Holland or the Wings. I know it goes both ways in that situation, but I think with the moves Holland is making, he's not allowing much room for Brunner. And when one of his moves was for a one year deal on a 40 year old, you have to wonder if it wouldn't have been better to have just given Brunner the money it took to get him to sign here. Time will tell, but Brunner came into the NHL and was pretty solid in his first year. Some of the kids coming up certainly have potential, but we really don't know how well they'll adjust to the NHL game full time and the day to day pressure of playing an important role on an NHL club. Again, we've seen plenty of guys display flashes of brilliance on call ups only to sputter up and flounder around once making the real NHL transition. Opie 308 Report post Posted July 5, 2013 The other thing to bare in mind is that Brunner was also holding back Tatar, maybe Holland and the Org see Tatar as a better long term fit than Brunner.
TheOwl 77 Report post Posted July 5, 2013 Brunner will have the better career than Nyquest or Tatar, Kenny needs to get him signed, 2.5 million for 3 years, getter done. 1 lwing reacted to this
heyfolks 8 Report post Posted July 5, 2013 Brunner appears to be a soft, no hit, no D, 20 goal scorer. Tater appears to be a more competitive replacement, with more speed and tenactiy. The question is, can he make the same offensive contribution as Brunner? I prefer Tatar and bringing up the other younger forwards. Good luck to Smiley. 2 esteef and T.Low reacted to this

TheOwl 77 Report post Posted July 5, 2013 Brunner turned down Holland's offers and is moving on. Probably cause he offered him 1 year, 2 million. Give him 2.5 per for 3 years. That'll get him, and he'll be well worth every cent.
NorwegianWing 24 Report post Posted July 5, 2013 I'm thinking the Wings were convinced by how frequently Tatar scored in the Calder Cup run. Encouraging. Not sweating this too much, though Brunner should go on to have a good career.

What makes you say this about Brunner? I would stake a large wager that Nyquist's career is far better than Brunner's. Tater, well that wager would be more of a 1:1 thing. Brunner plays little D and has no physical aspect to his game. Tater has a better game, with one notable question mark, the ability to score at the NHL level. IMO Brunner and Tatar are both 3rd line wingers. Nyquist is a top 6 and, in time, he has definite top line potential.
dirtydangles 1,328 Report post Posted July 5, 2013 Brunner turned down 2 deals from holland for 2 years and 3 years - this is on him at this point. He isn't a proven commodity and can't ask for too much if he truly "loves detroit." I understand that he is 26 and is trying to make decent coin before his career is over but this isn't the time to make bank - he should sign a short deal and show he can play 82 nhl games in a season at a high level then make bank. dirtydangles 1,328 Report post Posted July 5, 2013 Kenny offered him 2 and 3 year contracts before noon today THIS. Stop ripping on holland when you don't know the facts. Brunner decided to test the market so holland went out and protected the team. Its okay to rip on holland if you don't respect that but not because he didn't try. 2 Opie and Wingsfan72 reacted to this

IF we get Cleary or Morrow and not Brunner THEN we can be angry at Kenny. 2 Z Winged Dangler and Rivalred reacted to this
matthewdanna 143 Report post Posted July 5, 2013 You can't get mad at Holland when a player turns down multiple contract offers. Maybe he doesn't ever want to play defense... just sayin'
Danielsm 244 Report post Posted July 5, 2013 Very upsetting that Brunner turned us down, but with all the current talent we have on three straight lines, he would see a lot of third-line minutes. For his career, he is better suited somewhere else.
