Brunner Contract Talks

I've seen a few mentions that he turned down 2 offers from the Wings. I don't remember the value but I think they were 2 and 3 year terms.

Brunner, who spent his first year playing in North America last season, rejected two- and three-year contracts from the Red Wings. His brief stint in Detroit appears to be over.

So all of you with your misplaced rage on Holland about not getting Brunner signed, where are you now???

I'm still here. I still don't like the Alfredsson signing and believe that having Brunner over him would be good for now and the future. 1 year is not my idea of a good use of 3.5 mil with 5.5 mil incentives.

I agree. I'm not blaming Holland for not getting Brunner signed. But the Alfredssonn 1 year deal is baffling. But it is what it is.

The longer Brunner remains unsigned, the less people around here can blame Holland. It seems like he's asking for a pretty decent chunk of money. I'm pretty comfortable that Holland made the right move with his signings.

His past signings (i.e. Sammy) might not have worked out, but given that past years' mistakes can't be undone, Holland has executed flawlessly this offseason IMO.

I agree with that. (Well, time will tell on whether or not our offseason moves were flawless, but I like them now).

When millions upon millions were handed out on July 5th, and it became clear that Brunner was going to shop around, my assumption was that he had at least two other suitors he could bid off each other and would sign in a day or two. Or at least that was my assumption because he seemed to be happy with the Red Wings and a two-year deal of some decent amount still allows him to increase his value for a 2015 contract, or return to Switzerland.

Now, you have to wonder if he ever had a better offer anywhere, or if he and his agent are being totally irrational about this. The player in the second half of last season would have struggled to reach 15 goals over an 82-game season. He also doesn't have an 82-game season on his resume. I don't think 2.5 million or 3 million per year is unreasonable for him to ask for, but I also understand why teams aren't lining up to sign a guy who could be the next Ville Leino. He has no track record.

What you are missing is that before noon on the first day of free agency, Brunner told the Wing's management he was testing the waters and turned down their offers.

That means before the free agency period even began, he told Holland he was going to entertain other offers.

So in your opinion, should Holland have waited to see what Brunner was going to do while other players signed with other teams?

So now instead of being pissed at him for not signing Brunner you are changing your tune to, well he shouldn't have offered Alfredsson the one 1 deal?

A guy who would have been tied with Brunner last season in points, a mere two goals behind him.

Unless Holland came out and absolutely WOWED Brunner's agent with a 5 year 4 mil offer Brunner was going to test the market.

There are reports out there that he is looking for 4 mil a year.

For a guy with a half of a season in the NHL who didn't even get a sniff of the NHL until he was 27!

I'm not so sure its misplaced. Holland has yet to make a trade we need the last few years let alone recently with the glut of forwards on the roster. I'd rather have Brunner under contract at a slightly higher price tag right now than Samuelsson/Tootoo riding the bench sucking a larger combined salary. I don't think Alfie is a misuse of funds if he contributes. Don't judge Holland by his attempt at getting things done, judge him on how functional our roster is. Right now we need to lose some people, the ball is still in his court to get something done.

You are not sure it is misplaced?

People were calling for Holland's head because he was not getting Brunner signed.

When in fact Brunner turned down 2 Wings' offers before noon the day free agency began.

BTW: the free agency period didn't start until noon!

Given Brunner didn't want to sign what would you have done?

I'm not mad at the Alfredsson signing, I mean it is a 1-year deal, and I think we know what we're getting from him: an old but legendary player desperate for a cup, probably good for 45-50 points. With that said if Brunner wasn't waiting so long, he'd probably be signed instead of Alfredsson.

According to various sources, he's been trying to move both of them.

That said, there's simply not much room for Brunner on this team. With Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Franzen, Weiss, Alfredsson, Tatar, Nyquist, and Bertuzzi/whoever, the Wings already have three scoring lines. Then they've got Helm, Andersson, Miller, and Eaves to round out the checking line. Much as I would like to have Brunner on this team, there's just no space; and more importantly, there's no reason to give him the top-six role that he's demanding as a condition of being signed. He performed better in a third-line capacity, and he's not satisfied with that. His demand for top-six time despite his relative inexperience, insufficient degree of consistency and defensive shortcomings is perhaps part of what's turning teams off on him.

I don't believe his camp is asking for 4 m per over 4 years, he just hasn't proven enough for that kind of money, period. At some point his agent has to look at the reality and that's at the very best 3,5 per for 2 years also called a "prove it" contract.

Whatever happens, I wish him well.

I think 3 mil for 1 year is the best he'll get. He hasnt done anything spectacular.

I like Brunner but we're better off signing Gagne/Prospal/Hejduk for half the price. That is if management still wants an offensive winger. Sign two of them for 2mil a piece and let Cleary walk. Put Vinnie on the 2nd line and Gagne/Hejduk on the third and we have instant scoring depth. Low risk/high reward and gives more fodder for our favorite your team is too old game.

Z - Pav - Alfie
Franzen - Weiss - Prospal
Gagne - Anderson - Nyquist (Hull - Devereaux - Pav 2.0)
Abby - Helm - Miller/Bert
Emmerton/Tootoo

Use Tatar for any injuries to our top 9. That'll get him a good chunk of games. Or are we out of options with him?

I forgot about Bert. He does have some value as a designated shootout specialist and goalie screener.

Tatar cannot be sent down. Nyquist can but if he is it won't be for more than a couple weeks while things get sorted out.

I see. Then forget Gagne and slot in Tatar. Both Tatar and Nyquist are 100 percent NHL ready, I only wanted an excuse to have Gagne cause I've always liked him. Oh well, I still think Prospal would be a great fit.

They don't need another player now. Dump 2 of Bertuzzi, Samuelsson, Eaves or Emmerton if Helm is good to go, dump one if not and they're set with 3 good scoring lines and a check line

You're right but proven scoring depth doesn't hurt for one of the lowest scoring teams in the NHL. Replacing Brunner's production with a 41 year old Alfie isn't a slam dunk. I think a 2nd veteran top 6er will help shoulder the load. There's plenty of vet wingers out there that'll come on 2mil 1 year deals.

I'd consider Tatar as Brunner's replacement since he'll be playing on the third line most likely. Either way, I think Tatar and Alfie are more complete players than Brunner is right now anyway.

Trade Sammy and Quiency, and a 2nd round pick to the Islanders for a 7th round pick. Sign Brunner for 4 years at 2.5 per. DONE.

HAHAHAHA you think 2.5 gets it done.

LOL
