Brunner Contract Talks

No. Im one of those fans that means "good" when I say good. I say "great" when I mean great, "Norris caliber" when I mean Norris caliber, and "the 2nd coming of Lidstrom when I mean the 2nd coming of Lidstrom. I dont need to defend Quincey. His TOI, salary, and coach's confidence are enough to stand on their own without needing defence. Players in the PRESS BOX making 2 mil per as healthy scratches need to be defended. Why you choose that battle is beyond me. We have plenty of likeable players.

Why you choose to defend Quincy making WAY more than he should be is beyond me.

even you agreed it was a mistake to bring him back

I even think I found my answer why it is you are defending him

"This is how I feel. If the old guys dont put up the stats, then they should sit. But Babcock cant just sit a guy Holland is paying 2 mil a year to play."

I'm surprised you haven't caught on yet.

He makes 3.75 mil per. Ericsson will make more next year too.

I wanted Brunner back as much as the next guy, but at this point it really is time for us Wings fans to move on. First of all he's asking for too much money and looks as though he's sticking to his guns. And on top of that our complete logjam at forward makes it nearly impossible to sign anyone, let alone someone asking for a million more than they're worth. And with so many young talented forwards in our system, it becomes a no brainer to let Damien walk. We should all just focus on the positive that we no longer have to deal with worthless Dan Cleary taking up a top-6 roster spot :bye1:

Khan's take on the Brunner situation:

A. It's highly doubtful that Brunner will return. He was seeking a multiyear deal worth around $3.5 million a season. The Red Wings offered two years at $2.5 million per season. They were hesitant to offer more to a player with no track record in the NHL (just 44 games).

I doubt that Brunner would significantly lower his asking price to return to Detroit. Plus, he's looking for a top-six role to maximize his offensive ability, and the Red Wings are set with their top six.

The thing that makes Brunner so expendable is that he's so one dimensional. He's small and isn't strong defensively. They already have Tatar and Nyquist like that, although both should improve their back checking with experience.

If Cleary is brought back, and right now it's looking pretty unlikely unless they get a ton of injuries, it will be as a bottom 6 role and will be more for his off ice influence than anything else. If I was Nill I'd offer a short term contract for good money so he could mentor Seguin. Cleary was there before, the high draft pick who would rather party than work. He could be a good influence.

I like Brunner, but Tatar will be a fine replacement and make everyone forget about LeBrun.

Tatar brings a lot more grit & determination but I just keep having a sinking feeling that either he or Nyquist end up getting packaged up in a trade to get back to the roster limit by the end of camp. A 'we had to include one (Tatar/Nyquist) in order to move the other (Eaves or Tootoo maybe)' type of scenario. Really don't want that to happen.

Tatar and Nyquist aren't going anywhere unless we get some damn good players back in return.

It would most likely be Tatar. For whatever reason he seemed to fall out of favor with babs and Holland last season

I hope not either. Hopefully Kenny can do something else that doesn't involve losing either kid.

I honestly think they decided last year was a transition year and to try them out which is exactly what they did. Unexpectedly made the playoffs and put up a decent run but left Tatar down because he was there when the Griffins went on their run. Not to mention he was the MVP and potted 16 goals.

It was his attitude, I bet. When he got to the Wings and scored his first goal, he acted like Yakupov. Im sure they would have preferred that he acted like Datsyuk instead. The Barry Sanders way of scoring always sits well with everyone.

While I don't agree with Axe's example (or Axe in general, sorry bud  ) I am going to state an unpopular opinion:

I don't like Tatar. Don't know why. Can't put my finger on it. He seems kind of...douchey. And I have nothing to back that up. But given the choice between Goose and Tatar, I'll choose Goose every time. So while a lot of you here see Tatar as a serviceable replacement for Brunner--even an upgrade--I just can't bring myself to agree even though logically I know you may be right. Just a feeling I can't shake, but I'd rather have Brunner. *shrug*

Don't forget Tatar is younger too. He turned pro at 18.

I think both will eventually be better than Brunner, in different ways. Tatar has a little more sandpaper in him. Nyquist is smoother. Tatar reminds me of Hudler, only bigger and a better skater. Nyquist is more like Zetterberg lite.

Just please remember that they will be rookies and don't wrote them off when they make rookie mistakes and score 10-15 goals and 30-35 points.

I like Brunner and wanted him over Alfie.

But like some are saying a third with Nyquist and Tatar is better than Nyquist and Brunner. And Tatar and Nyquist should amount to being better players.

But I still want Brunner back. We lack a pure goal scorer like him.

I love America and LGW because we can disagree with each other and debate. Life is grand!!

Brunner is FINISHED with the Wings.

I can totally see where you're coming from on that. He does come across as a little too full of himself at times & I can see how that could get under one's skin. Maybe the Wings need more of that feisty little pest who will get under the other team's skin though. That's certainly a dimension he brings to the table over someone like Brunner & at about a quarter of the cost it would reportedly take to bring Brunner back.
