The contract can't be registered with the NHL or officially announced until July 5, the first day of free agency, because Datsyuk still has a year remaining on a seven-year deal worth $6.7 million per season.

The extension ensures that Datsyuk, who turns 35 on July 20, will be a Red Wing through at least the 2016-17 season.

From DSN:

According to Dats' Gary Greenstin, "3 year deal worth $23 million: $10 million first year: $7.5 2nd year; $5.5 3rd year. Cap hit is 7.5 mil."

Awesome news, can't wait to keep watching his greatness and the effect he'll have on our younger players!

This is the biggest thing for me. We have him for 4 more years to teach Nyquist, Tatar, and Jurco specifically. Very excited about the future of this team.
