Briere will get $937,500 a season for the next four years to not play for the #flyers.

He is small, 35 years old, has a history of concussions, and just had the worst season of his NHL career.

We don't need another undersized center, let alone one clearly on the downslope, and certainly not when there are prospects waiting for a roster spot.

Who needs Briere when you've got Flip?

He produced at about the same PPG clip as Flip last year (and much worse the year before) and is old (declining) and terrible defensively. Replacing Fil with Briere would be a downgrade.

If he can be had for cheap then why wouldn't we make a push for him? Super classy invidivual, a great leader, and has good hands. The guy served as a mentor to this guy named Giroux and Couturier who was very good his rookie year. We have so many young players and it would be great to have someone like that in the locker room. Looking at it in the long run, Briere could help develop Tatar and Gus and then retire by the time these two reach their full NHL potential (vs signing a 28-30 year old on a longer term which they'll probably look for). Who cares if he's bad defensively, playing with Pav and Z will help cover that up. As for injury history he's played close to full seasons the past few seasons.

I don't like this whole "we're getting younger not older" thing either. Our entire blue line is pretty young, while our forwards have a nice blend of veterans (Pav Z etc.) and young players (emdog andersson nyquist brunner etc.).

Nothing against him, but stay away from Briere please. Wings are going to get younger, bigger Briere doesn't match the new direction.

The Flyers are really handeling their players like crap at some point this will come back and haunt them.

So much agreement.

It should also be noted that Briere is settled in Philly and will probably look to play for a team in the area.

It already came back and haunted them when they missed the playoffs. Honestly, all the Wings fans who want to fire Holland + Babs, who want to trade/waive/buyout everyone who isn't' Pav or Hank, who want to sign every FA under the sun - take a looong hard look at Philly (and NYR).

Throwing players at the wall and seeing who sticks just doesn't work. Philly management, fans and media have yet to work that out. No roster stability or continuity, a couple of random playoff runs and 20 years of underachievement.

Especially true given that his ex has custody of the kids & staying close to Philly with help him immensely with visitation. Wouldn't be surprised if he winds up with the Devil, Caps, Rangers, Isles, or Pens.

What? ...because he's the first confirmed compliance buyout we should jump all over Briere?

He's a forward going backwards. (...as far as production, etc. goes.) Great guy, but... No. Thank. You.

he's awesome. i would do it in a heartbeat

He had an awful season that was ended by his second concussion in 13 months. Awesome? Maybe two years ago.

Rumor has it half the NHL is after Briere... I'll find a link...

@DarrenDreger: 15 teams or more believed to have interest in Briere once he becomes a buyout UFA. Briere will want a 1-2 year deal. #TSN
